When Did the GOP Lose Touch With Reality?

Some of my Republican friends ask if I’ve gone crazy. I say: Look in the mirror.

I’ve been a Republican all my adult life. I have worked on the editorial page of The Wall Street Journal, at Forbes magazine, at the Manhattan and American Enterprise Institutes, as a speechwriter in the George W. Bush administration. I believe in free markets, low taxes, reasonable regulation, and limited government. I voted for John McCain in 2008, and I have strongly criticized the major policy decisions of the Obama administration. But as I contemplate my party and my movement in 2011, I see things I simply cannot support.

America desperately needs a responsible and compassionate alternative to the Obama administration’s path of bigger government at higher cost. And yet: This past summer, the GOP nearly forced America to the verge of default just to score a point in a budget debate. In the throes of the worst economic crisis since the Depression, Republican politicians demand massive budget cuts and shrug off the concerns of the unemployed. In the face of evidence of dwindling upward mobility and long-stagnating middle-class wages, my party’s economic ideas sometimes seem to have shrunk to just one: more tax cuts for the very highest earners. When I entered Republican politics, during an earlier period of malaise, in the late seventies and early eighties, the movement got most of the big questions—crime, inflation, the Cold War—right. This time, the party is getting the big questions disastrously wrong.

It was not so long ago that Texas governor Bush denounced attempts to cut the earned-income tax credit as “balancing the budget on the backs of the poor.” By 2011, Republican commentators were noisily complaining that the poorer half of society are “lucky duckies” because the EITC offsets their federal tax obligations—or because the recession had left them with such meager incomes that they had no tax to pay in the first place. In 2000, candidate Bush routinely invoked “churches, synagogues, and mosques.” By 2010, prominent Republicans were denouncing the construction of a mosque in lower Manhattan as an outrageous insult. In 2003, President Bush and a Republican majority in Congress enacted a new prescription-drug program in Medicare. By 2011, all but four Republicans in the House and five in the Senate were voting to withdraw the Medicare guarantee from everybody under age 55. Today, the Fed’s pushing down interest rates in hopes of igniting economic growth is close to treason, according to Governor Rick Perry, coyly seconded by TheWall Street Journal. In 2000, the same policy qualified Alan Greenspan as the “greatest central banker in the history of the world,” according to Perry’s mentor, Senator Phil Gramm. Today, health reform that combines regulation of private insurance, individual mandates, and subsidies for those who need them is considered unconstitutional and an open invitation to “death panels.” A dozen years ago, a very similar reform was the Senate Republican alternative to Hillarycare. Today, stimulative fiscal policy that includes tax cuts for almost every American is “socialism.” In 2001, stimulative fiscal policy that included tax cuts for rather fewer Americans was an economic-recovery program.

Its a long article.

Frum certainly knows how to say it like it is.  I've voted for many a Republican in my time, but I don't see myself doing so in future cycles if they keep this up.  The Republicans have been advocating the dismantling of our democratic republic in favor of fascism/corporatism.  "We the people" can not let that happen.

FR

At precisely the same time you lost your ability to think rationally.

tsk tsk.. such a liar willbe.

erieangel -> RE: When Did the GOP Lose Touch With Reality? (11/21/2011 7:20:56 PM)

I'd consider myself truly insane and in need of help if I even considered voting for any of the republicans running (except Jon Huntsman, but he'll never rise in the polls as he is far too rational.

I get that impression too, erie. Did you catch him on SNL? He wasnt bad... lol

erieangel -> RE: When Did the GOP Lose Touch With Reality? (11/21/2011 7:33:54 PM)

There was another Republican on Chris Hayes' Saturday morning show "UP" on MSNBC who seemed rather reasonable as well.  He is a former governor, I think.  Unfortunately, I can't even remember his name because the media has been ignoring him and he wasn't invited to take part in  the last debate.  I voted for Obama in the last election and would be considering a Republican this time around if only they'd nominate somebody who could appeal to the masses rather than just to the crazier elements of that party.

There's a LOT of folks that are looking for any excuse in the world to not vote for Obama next time but the RNC won't give a viable choice.

Right, and it also leaves out a third party candidate as that would most likely get the non-viable choice from the RNC the win.

Well, allow me to say, as a loooooooooooooooooooooooooooong time Republican ("When Did the GOP Lose Touch With Reality?")....it was probably about 45 years ago.

Hillwilliam -> RE: When Did the GOP Lose Touch With Reality? (11/21/2011 7:53:38 PM)

I'm gonna say it was more recent, Lookie. When Reagan invited the fundies in, that was the beginning of it.

I believe that may have been Gary Johnson...

Yep.  He's the one.  What little I've seen of him, I like a lot.  My inability to remember his name is because I am generally bad with names.  Huntsman I remember because he's been in the news a lot, Johnson not so much and I wasn't really all that much attention to UP on Saturday morning.  Now I wish I had recorded the program.

tazzygirl -> RE: When Did the GOP Lose Touch With Reality? (11/21/2011 8:26:02 PM)

The better candidates for GOP have been hidden from the spot light so the circus acts could have center stage. Its no wonder why people believe the GOP wants to lose this election.

Gary Johnson probably.

When they started pandering to, and using, the religious far right.......as their smoke screen to sway the easily manipulated and less informed voters. It works fabulously for the very wealthy and power mongers.

Divert and Distract. Old military strategy.

From my POV,it was when the neo-conservatives took over.It was a sea change.

The neo-cons pretty much turned every conservative ideal on it`s head.

They also abandoned/threw under-da-bus/trashed American ideals (tho I have doubts the cons ever had them in the 1st place)like Habeas corpus, prohibitions against torture/cruel and unusual punishments, etc.,along with our honor.

I was waiting and waiting for someone on the con side to say something.Anything.

But for a number of reasons, some understandable, the few good men America was counting on to do something, shrugged.

It may have happened before bush took office but it didn`t become apparent till shrub was fucking up in the most extreme ways possible, followed by republicans defending the indefensible.

Before the neo-cons,anyone(especially a con)caught leaking the ID of CIA agents working in the field during a time of war would have been strung up with piano wire and left to rot.

Now,with today`s republican, acts of treason are "fair game" and defended by republicans.Hell, they celebrate the traitor, dick cheney.Talk about detached from reality. You basically have to cut off half your brain to square what that guy did.

This.  I honestly believe that is why Obama was elected in the first place.

I truly am an Independent voter. Yet, because of what the Repubs bring to the table now..........I almost always end up voting Dem. G.D. is the same way. Nothing the Repubs come up with is worth a damn.

I wouldn't disagree. But oddly enough, some of the definitions are surprising:

neoconservatism -n (in the US) a right-wing tendency that originated amongst supporters of the political left and has become characterized by its support of hawkish foreign policies ~World English Dictionary (Collins)

neoconservative -n moderate political conservatism espoused or advocated by former liberals or socialists. ~Random House

neoconservative -n a former liberal espousing political conservatism ~Merriam Webster
