I know that most people dislike some foods.  No one loves everything there is to eat in the world.  I, myself, hate mushrooms.  Nasty, rubbery, tasteless little things. Yuck.

Some people don't like certain ethnic foods.  I can understand that.  Don't want to go to the Ethiopian restaurant with the gang?  Hey, no problem.  We'll do Japanese next time.

But, to have a strong dislike of most foods?

Recently I was talking to a guy on here and the conversation turned to dining out and eating.  I love trying new foods, savoring my favorites and trying my hand at cooking tasty-sounding new dishes.  This guy hates so many foods it's actually weird.  He doesn't ever eat in any ethnic restaurants.  Doesn't eat onions, garlic, leeks or any other veggie used to flavor recipes.  Hates all seafood, sausage, meats cooked in sauces.  Only pasta sauce he eats is plain sauce from a jar.  He loathes cheese of any kind.  I know five year-olds with a more sophisticated palate.

Mind you, he hasn't even tasted a lot of these foods (I didn't mention them all), he just knows he doesn't like them.  I found myself actually turned off by his fear of trying new foods.  I know, I know, it's judgmental and isn't an indication of who he is as a person but I know eating out or cooking for him would be a difficult compromise.

I'm curious now.  Do any of you or anyone you know have this fear of trying new foods or just not liking many foods after tasting them?  Do you eat the same things over and over?  Are there foods that you once hated and now like?  There were a lot of foods I hated as a kid and love now.

I'm looking forward to the responses.

I don't like anchovies, kippers or any of those, as well as any uncooked fish. And fish needs to be broiled, fried or french fried. None of this boil it BS. I'll tolerate tuna in tuna salad.

But I like mushrooms. I really don't like the canned rubbery things, they need alot of help. But if you buy good mushrooms, especially fresh, there is a big difference. Sautee' them in some butter and eat them with something. On beef kicks ass.

I can't force myself to like potato pancakes. I tried for the sake of family but it never happened. Later I found I could stomach them if well salted and drowned in sour cream.

Mollusks, mussels, things like that. We were down in FL at a seafood restaurant and my two buddies decided to order this exotic seafood. The waiter gave them a tutorial on how to eat this shit ! There was a device like a nutcracker for some of them, and like a nut pick for other things or something. YOU WERE TAKING APART A BUG TO EAT ! Alot of things, you know I am cool with but this squicks me pretty good. The concept of chocolate covered ants EEEEEEK ! Anything that even resembles an insect of any kind, well except fowl. I'd probably eat pigeon but it's not one of my goals.

I can understand people having a dislike for foods they have tried. I hate mushrooms, pears and cucumber. As Term says I draw a line at insect type things but otherwise I will try things at least once.

What I don't get is people who say they don't like something but have never actually tried the food. I have also seen some very strange eating habits. I talked to someone that had to have all the food on her plate seperated. If she had meat, potatoes and peas nothing could touch. So if a pea touched her meat the whole meal was thrown away!

We also have a friend who will not try new food. Has never eaten Asian food of any kind and refuses to try it. I assumed it was something to do with the spices they use so eventualy I asked her. Her answer floored me a bit. She said "I don't eat things I haven't eaten before" Sadly she is bringing her daughter up the same way and they stick to a weekly set menu i.e roast on a sunday, pizza on a Tues.

Several years ago I read that they had found the gene that causes picky eaters. I'm one of them. The article even listed the foods that most picky eaters won't eat and they were foods I do not eat. I have a friend who is also picky and the list of foods we don't eat is almost identical.

There are also foods that I just look at and they turn my stomach even though I have never tasted them. This list includes things like guacamole, salsa, and salad dressings. Strangely there is one vegatable type food I do eat and that is cooked cabbage and sauerkraut. However, I refuse to even try cole slaw.

I do try new foods on occasion. They have to appeal to me visually before I will try them. I'm really not sure why I have this visual thing about foods.

I do know one person who is super picky. She will eat pasta but no sauce. She eats no bread and loves pizza but won't eat the crust. What I find strange about her is that she loves salads with dressing. I could eat a lettuce type salad but it couldn't have a dressing on it. Lettuce is one of the foods I didn't eat for most of my life. However, I now enjoy it on sandwiches and hamburgers.

I am very open to trying new foods, but there are some foods I've never tried and I have no intention of ever trying. Rhubarb and brussel sprouts are a couple. I just put my foot down about them. No way. And cranberry sauce. I don't need to try it to know I don't wanna go anywhere near that gelatinous mess.

I'm not afraid of the foods I refuse to eat, but I do know I will not like them no matter how they're fixed because i am so picky. Like fish. I find all fish very nasty and fishy and stinky. I will only eat shrimp if it's coconut fried shrimp, and I might eat fish sticks from a box, like fisherman gordons, but over all, nope won't touch the stuff.


Liver sucks ass , won't eat it either.


That being said, I wouldn't be interested in someone who was so food fussy, and he'd sure in the hell do all the cooking for himself with that attitude.

When I was a child I had the issue with different foods touching on the plate. I totally get that peas should never touch the potatoes. I also had a texture issue-couldn't eat anything with lumps or chunks in it, like chunky applesauce. Fortunately I've outgrown most of my pickyness about food and I love trying new things. I do draw the line at anything that can look at me (head attached) or still in its own home (mussels, clams on the shell). And I usually eat each item on my plate sequentially.

I won't eat broccoli, brussels sprouts or asparagus. I can't even stand the smell of them cooking. I'm not crazy about..ok, I'll admit, I don't like Mexican food. And I don't want food touching on my plate either. It used to make me gag when my ex would pile his corn on his mashed potatoes and then cover it with gravy. I left the table when he added jello to the combination....after that, I never made jello and had it with dinner meals. Nasty...just nasty!

I'll try new foods, I just don't eat the spicy stuff because I have GRD, and the stuff kills me. If I know I'm going to be eating something spicy, I'll take something first to try to stop the heartburn. I haven't had any Middle Eastern foods, mainly because I don't know where the places are to get it. But, if I googled one, I'd give it a whirl.

There is a genetic component to whether people like cabbage family veggies (cabbage, brussel sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower, etc). There's a difference in the taste buds. I can look up the source if anyone wants it.

My palate has certainly expanded since I was a child.

I worked with a woman who, if she had not eaten something as a child, would not try it as an adult. I'm interested in the psychology behind picky eating.

M is not fond of vegetables, but will try anything I make once, except for cabbage family veggies.

I couldn't date someone as described in the OP.

Oh, well that explains it. I don't eat cabbage either. Cooked cabbage, anyway.

Yup, my daughter's boyfriend. He had an extreme dislike for almost all foods. He's a skinny little thing and the only foods he'll eat are grilled boneless chicken, pizza, hamburgers. If it's anything different than that you really have to plead with him to try it.

What's really funny is my daughter loves to cook and is going to school for culinary arts. She's constantly cooking but has to sneak things into foods for him to try them.

Before I even ever met him I had taken my daughter out to a late dinner at a little diner. As we were about to leave I asked her if she wanted to get something for him to take home to eat. She ordered a a grilled chicken sandwich...no toppings, nothing except chicken and bun...blech.

My daughter's a little ocd in that things cannot be touching on her plate and everything has to be an even number. I find it funny that she hides that from her boyfriend lol.

Master is super picky about foods but not to the point that he won't try new things at least once unless they're certain foods he won't go near...liver, most veggies, mushrooms, squashes, pumpkin, certain textures.

The only food I can think of that I really won't eat is scallops. Ever since I had food poisoning from them  over 20 years ago I can't even go near them without feeling my stomach turn. Master is the same way with raw sushi....same reason and won't go near it.

Other than that though I absolutely love trying new foods.

I used to be pickier than I am, but I also ate a lot of strange foods back then that I won't touch now. I also have a texture issue - gooey things like runny eggs... gaaaaah nno. And foods on my plate have to stay apart, unless they're "sensible." Like something else and rice, as long as it remains a tolerable texture. And I can eat spinach and cheese, or spinach and mushrooms (I looooooove mushrooms) but mushrooms and cheese... no way. The smell and taste just makes my stomach go haywire.

But I like a wide variety of foods, different stuff from different cultures. And I'll try things. A relative connvinced me to try 3-bean-salad... I nearly died, but now I know I haaaate it, for sure. :p

Until I was about 24, I had what I'd call a psychological allergy to anything that came from the ocean, and always wondered whether it was linked back to a frightening experience as a 3 year old, where when standing in the ocean in Cape Cod, a crab got hold of my toe and wouldn't let go. Hurt like the dickens and scared the crap out of me. Then of course, it also might have been that the only fish we had in the house growing up was Mrs. Pauls Fish Sticks (yuk.)

Then at 24, while waitressessing, oddly enough, something possessed me to steal a broiled scallop off a customer's order before I left the kitchen with it, and was pleasantly shocked by how good it tasted, and loved the texture. From that point on, I became enamored with shellfish of any kind.

Once I moved to CO at 48, without provocation, I suddenly started developing an incredibly strong yearning for sushi, which I used to think was the most disgusting thing in the world, tho' I had never tried it before. The moment I tried it, covered in ginger, wasabi and soysauce, I fell in love, and to this day cannot get enough of it. Go figure! Maybe I'm making up for lost time. The mind and taste buds, and how they change over time, are a funny thing.

It's fascinating that some people don't even like foods touching each other on a plate or eating items sequentially.  I love things like casseroles, stews, soups and ethnic foods that mix meat and veggies together like Chinese or Indian.

Somehow mixed foods like that donn't count. I love chinese and indian. Or pasta with marinara sauces with veggies.
I can mix chana masala with rice, no problem (basmati rice, om nom nom...)
But if that and a salad were on a plate together, they can't cross the line. Haha :p
