Anyone have any thoughts on this?

http://www.americanselect.org/about

Seems too idealistic to actually work, but I am still researching things on it.

The first drawback I see is that not everyone has access to the internet, and some have no clue how to access it at all.

Yeah I just checked and latest stats show 51.7% of those in the US have access to the internet.

So if the idea went out other than the internet?

Internet and 800 number? Verified by SSN? There you have your second pitfall.

I love the idea, I really do.

maybe that's the point. those who are too set in their ways to keep up with the modern world, won't participate.

And that is fine with you, to deny their right to engage in the political process because they are too poor, or too old, or for whatever reason they have no access?

I believe that stat is for home high speed access, not high speed plus dial-up, and was from 2007.

I'm interested in the stat for Americans who have neither internet at home nor access to internet at their local library.

Digital Age Is Slow to Arrive in Rural America

Gina Wilson, director of the Thomasville library, oversees 11 terminals with lightning-fast Internet access, paid for with stimulus money. They attract students and the unemployed during the day. At night, people stop by after work to check their e-mail or scroll through Facebook.

Mrs. Wilson noticed that after hours, people would pull into the parking lot to try to use the library’s wireless signal. So she started leaving it on all night, and plans to post a sign on the door with the password (which, if you are in Thomasville and need to get online, is “guest”).

US public libraries provide critical access to Internet services

Nearly all of America's 16.543 public library buildings offer free public access to computers, to the Internet, and to trained staff equipped to help library users gain technology skills and find the information they need for school, work, and more.

All the library systems to which I have belonged have had free computer workshops, for example: http://www.broward.org/Library/EventsClasses/Pages/ComputerClassesMN.aspx

I know there are literacy classes, kalika. I also know of areas where people are still resistant to that change, they have no desire to learn, voting is perfectly fine at a voting stations, ect ect.

And due to the economy, libraries are closing branches....

nothing's being denied. it's more a question of setting a prerequisite on it
there's always public libraries, internet cafes, etc

You're never too old to learn. people just get too old to WANt to learn. i have several older members of my family who can't use a computer. not because it's too complex for them, but because they've convinced themselves it's so complex that they won't even attempt to look at the screen.

I also had a 70 year old programming teacher in college, who ditched his lifelong career as a miner and went into IT.

How about internet voting centers for those who haven't access at home. Are there any localities in the US that lack voting booths? Could replace them with internet connected ones. People who don't go online often can still get information via newspapers, magazines and TV as they do now.

You are from the UK... ever visited the US?

willbeurdaddy -> RE: Americans Elect? (11/27/2011 10:39:42 AM)

After reviewing the answers to about 100 questions, the responses have a strongly liberal lean, and the phrasing of many of the questions encourages that. The most likely result therefore is two lines on the ballot for the liberal candidate du jour. Since the results are considerably more liberal than the US overall, it is indicative of any internet voting process not yet being reflective of the population overall, and is therefore an idea who's time isnt yet ripe.
