I know of an important spiritually pragmatic rule of thumb: accept that which enhances your connection to Divinity, and reject that which impedes it. And that can be different, even opposite, for different people.
In the context of the predominantly monist understanding of divinity that informs the various traditions encompassed by "Hinduism," I can appreciate the wisdom of the rule. But absent that conception of divinity, it is as much a prescription for strapping on a bomb and blowing up a bus full of women and children as anything else.
