Prime Minister Stephen Harper is getting tougher on pot growers than he is on rapists of children. Under the Tories' omnibus crime legislation tabled Tuesday, a person growing 201 pot plants in a rental unit would receive a longer mandatory sentence than someone who rapes a toddler or forces a five-year-old to have sex with an animal.

Producing six to 200 pot plants nets an automatic six-month sentence, with an extra three months if it's done in a rental or is deemed a public-safety hazard. Growing 201 to 500 plants brings a one-year sentence, or 1½ years if it's in a rental or poses a safety risk.

The omnibus legislation imposes one-year mandatory minimums for sexually assaulting a child, luring a child via the Internet or involving a child in bestiality. All three of these offences carry lighter automatic sentences than those for people running medium-sized grow-ops in rental property or on someone else's land.

A pedophile who gets a child to watch pornography with him, or a pervert exposing himself to kids at a playground, would receive a minimum 90-day sentence, half the term of a man convicted of growing six pot plants in his own home.

Screw the bit about pot, why are the child rapists given such light sentences?!
It is a proven repeat crime. Pedophiles should never be let go unless they have been chemically castrated first.

children and women are less important than stopping the rampant stoners?
stoners are easier to catch than rapists and pedes?
Pot plants can be burned and forgotton about after the incident has gone thru the courts?
Stoners who grow for private use are less dangerous than real violent criminals?
The cops want an easier life?

I agree with you all the way. I cannot believe the shit that goes on. I mean I have to believe it, but I just don't get the reasoning. What is challenging is how the hell do we stop it and change it? I know few of my efforts have amounted to any real change that would be of much worth and after decades of fighting things... it just seemed fruitless. I was a pain in their ass... I got their attention but they haven't done much to change anything.

I cant tell you how much this gets me close to boiling point.
The local OWS is making people aware and across canada too.
From the tweets and reactions Ive seen from non cons are that they werent aware, so awareness and education plus some protest might help. Greed is leading the blind who are leading the stupid.
It shouldnt be happening anywhere, Im not giving up tho:)

I got sick and tired, then too busy with my son and health issues. If I can't reasonably answer their calls in response to my letters, I can't be effective. Even then, in all the years I worked at all this, a few grants and one law changed. Well... besides being known as a pain in the ass of any elected official in my vacentity. I will still put my name etc to issues, but can't actually work on the efforts myself.

oh I didnt meanyou were;) the times we have talked, I know you are a fighter:) in the nicest possible sense, Ive had my issues lately but im involved to the point I can be...and its spurring me deeper. which is all I meant. When I can do more I will, thankfully, the computer opens up new possibilities for me, regarding what I can do to help.
Women and children in canada deserve better than any conservative initiative can deliver. I know they deserve better world wide, but baby steps.
