Servant4Queen -> RE: Facebook seems to be sending out friend invites w/o my permission. (11/30/2011 1:01:29 PM)

Facebook sucks and its procedures are nasty and underhanded. I'm an IT guy and I am very careful about some things such as checking off that little check box that says sure go to my private email and send friend invites. Bullshit.

I dont know how it happened but one day I see all these people show up as friends I might know. There were a number of them i found that facebook could not know about...until I discovered that facebook somehow went through my email contacts and suggested those people as potential friends. WTF?

Here is how I fixed. Create a NEW email address and use that to sign in on facebook through the account settings. Dont use the email address for anything except facebook. In turn if facebook decides to scan your email contacts it will come up with nothing.

Perhaps I get a little paranoid, but its rather scary that your privacy can be compromised so easily...even when you are careful. If you have a gmail account google (and facebook) now asks for your mobile phone number to verify your email address and account. FU!

Its all about collecting data..your data so be careful what you give away.

The most serious problem I see and in my opinion is that even government agencies are jumping on the bandwagon. Everyone wants you connecting with them through your facebook profile/phone/whatever. Not going to happen. I use fake emails for many things, that do not come back to me unless you could find a connection from many years ago and multiple addresses. Good luck wasting a lot of time. You may find something, but it won't be me.

I went to post on a news media site... no longer can unless I use an email address with yahoo or my face book account. Bye bye.

I won't let anyone using apps get near me. Those games, links, family connections or anything are all another trap or way to get info even if it is by way of someone else. I tend to delete anyone that involves me and rarely add anyone anyway.

FB is planning a huge IPO in the near future.  Goldman Sachs is handling it for them.  Since the only thing FB has to sell is personal information, I imagine they will be coming up with all sorts of little tricks to gather it.

Y? Are they getting more money the more friends some1 "invites"

According to Suze's link, spammers get money for verified email addys:

According to Herald Sun, social media experts hint at ‘rogue’ Facebook apps being the cause for the glitch. Though Facebook clarifies that it isn’t an official feature, the social networking site is unable to explain the reason behind the glitch.

"Verified email addresses sell for 20c to one dollar each so if they are able to extract 100,000 verified email addresses from Facebook that is probably worth upwards of 20,000 dollars to spammers," said Nik Cubrilovic, technology blogger.

Facebook is very sneaky. And not just facebook but the other leeches as well. Google for one. I got a gmail account a while ago and "thought" it was private....this particular gmail account wasnt important to me and was set up mainly to chat with a friend. Well after a few weeks (or less) I noticed that many of the ads on the side had something to do what the subject matter of our emails and chat. WTF? So in essence google/gmail was reading my mail. Yes its probably old news to some. but it left me with a awful feeling.

I will try to find the article but I read that Facebook and its partners use cookies and other means to track where you go from facebook to other sites. Tracking cookies are not new but going from facebook to other places with "them" knowing you you really are is scary.

With some sites, I use one type of browser and only that. I then switch to another browser type to do other things. Not sure how effective it is or how invasive some are, but I feel better. lol

I like the way you think Lockit.

Google isnt reading your emails exactly. They are scanned for key words, and advertising to you based on those things. If you posted personal info, it doesnt acknowledge any of that. If you and I were talking about a stupid tampon ad, I am sure we would see an increase in those kinda ads, Servant4Queen.

Yup, i went through that, and if you don't have a mobile phone then they want your home address or a cc or something like that and I was like fuck no! FB aint so fucking all mighty important I am handing out sensitive info to join.

Bullshit! Not overreacting at all. Scan my emails or read my emails, store my emails...and not tell me beforehand? Its all the same. Like it or not , the powers that be do in fact have a digital imprint of you based on your activity on the internet. Emails, pictures, chat, skype- Many people could give a dam who knows what, many others (myself included) do care. Up until facebook I considered mself "off the grid". Google me and you couldnt find me. Now...just today I googled myself and found two bits of info and a pic. The source was facebook but the website presented the same info about me (as on facebook) was not facebook. WTF? Nothing incriminating but it did bug me that that information was distributed without my knowledge of permission.
Some of us do not like to show the world our faces here on this site as we may have a public life. We reserve the right to show who we want to. Other people have no issue showing the world your face and kinks. No issue there. All I ask for is to have the choice to allow info about me to be distributed around the world or not. Sure there are others ways to stay off the grid, including staying off the internet but thats not fun is it?

TfB, This is your big problem for the day ? You need to go back to school and do something constructive with your life.

There's a whole bunch of steps you can take to keep your activities online private. We have a whole slew of them installed, but I don't know what they are. If anybody wants to know some of the things you can do, write Hanners and I'm sure she'll tell you. She's way serious about online privacy, to the point that its annoying at times*.

<* But you didn't hear that from me[;)]>

You've been here long enough to understand a thing or two and I doubt you have missed a whole lot of what might be happening. Thus... in my opinion... which is hardly ever humble... that was ignorant and a bit on the cruel side.
