mmm Elam's Rootbeer floats and Pork tenderloins. It was a local Central Illinois drive in that closed years ago. Probably spent every Sat night of my teen years cruising it. Sigh

Kreckles Lemon ice soft serve cones. another very local eatery.

SteakN Shake (there aren't any west of the Rockies and In N Out just is not the same).

Big Boy Banana Walnut Pancakes. The nearest Big Boy is 2+ hours from here so I suppose I still could get them but with gas at $ 3.50 a gallon itll be a while before I go for them.

boiled peanuts mmmm sure I could get on a plane and fly to GA or Fl but I want them NOW!

OMG I forgot pumpkin blossoms fritters. A little friut/veggie stand just outside my hometown would take the blossoms from the vines, dredge them in flour and cornmeal then egg and deep fry them. Sooo good. Soo hot! fresh from the deep fryer made to order. We would snarf them down, eyes tearing up from them burning our mouths; but never could wait for them to cool off. LOL Once we saw the sign for them at the stand we knew it was officially fall.

Orange Crush in glass bottles, my Grandma's homemade pecan pie (mine is good, but hers was amazing), my Grandma's candy.. I have no idea what it's called.. we never found a recipe for it after she died, but it was like eating little sweet clouds.. close to Divinity but way better. 95% of what comes out of my kitchen is made from scratch, so I guess what I miss most are the secrets that Grandma used that made hers just 'that' much better..

maybe it's the love.. ;)

Trix that are round, like they are supposed to be (the funky shapes don't taste the same..lol). Heath ice cream bars, not something resembling them. Chocola...don't know what happened to that (I think this was before the Yohoo stuff). AND Screaming Yellow Zonkers!!!

Well, yanno, the kids gotta have a moon pie now and then.

Oh sure, blame the kids *grins*

Well, don't tell anyone, but I don't really care for moon pies all that much.  But, oh Master of Discipline, I did refrain from buying any popcorn when I took the kids to see Over The Hedge yesterday.  How is THAT for discipline?

White castle...so krystal is close that dont make it the same.

Now, see, this is a statement on the human condition.  I have White Castles ALL around Me, and while they are good after an all night play party (and mandatory after all night drinking) what I really miss is...

SONIC.   We don't have them in No. Illinois.  God, as soon as I drive south...its a SONIC stop.   Those cherry-limeaid things?  mmmmm.

And we don't have Waffle Houses, either (Don't get me started on the failure of the North in good fast food).  We JUST started getting "Steak n Shakes" about 5 years ago...before that I had to drive to Springfield.

(Was at IML and a play party all night....I'm HUNGRY.....)

Sonic has cranberry limeades, strawberry limeades and apple limeades now, in addition to the good ol cherry limeade.  The cranberry ones are AWESOME.  My kids would go to Sonic everyday if I let them!

OH MAN, I had cousins in Central Illinois, and we'd visit them for long weekends and go to Elam's!  I'd forgotten about that!

Forget orientation!  What really matters is FOOD.   Jo, Bitatruble, feastie...marry Me and we'll sent up a roadside stand of pecan pie, cornbread, rootbeer floats and pork tenderloins, and maybe our own Sonic.  I'd die a cholesterol laden, happy man.  Y'all can come, too...but you gotta bring eats.

cocacola when it actually had coke in it

subbecky -> RE: Foods you miss (5/28/2006 12:09:51 PM)

It sounds like a sound money management maneuver to Me. The price of popcorn at the theaters at the casinos is outrageous, and the price of Coke is only made more palatable by the ocassional promotion that allows you a refill.

Lol Emperor 1956 you're the reason I even thought of Elam's. When you mentioned going to Springfield for Steak N Shake. Haven't been there in awhile and the last time I was the first places I wanted to go were Elam's, Kreckles and Monical's for pizza! I got to do 2 of the 3 but damn I sure miss those floats with their home made cinnamon vanilla ice cream. Elam's had Hard Cider as well during the fall that they sold to you no matter what age. Sure you had to drink about a gallon to get a buzz but to small town kids it was the best! Thanks for the memories OP and Emperor1956!!!

edited because I can't seem to spell Emperor correctly!  Whoops! Genius IQ??? Who me?? Who would think it!

I'm not known for my money management skills...lol.  I often do buy the popcorn and the cokes, but I decided to be strong yesterday and resist.

Hmmmmm, that is pretty impressive. Going to the movies, I need popcorn and a sprite, it's not that I want it...lol.

::laughs:: Somehow I think my husband might object to me marrying someone else. He's stated quite often that one of the reasons he keeps me around is because I was the only girl he ever met who didn't actually own a can opener.

Go figure.. he bought me one.. although I'm not quite sure where it's at. [;)]

I miss In-and-Out burgers.  They were available in California, but not here in Texas   Maybe it's a good thing, as I don't have that constant temptation.

Mystic,

I'll trade you an INO Double Double for an order of SNS cheesy fries any day. Although I am rather addicted to the Double Double Protein style.

i miss my grandma's eggplant casserole.....she used to be able to go into her kitchen and us thinking that there wasn't a thing in there to eat, she could whip up the most delicious meal out of nothing....i wish i could have been more like her.....anyway, thanks

wild1cfl -> RE: Foods you miss (5/28/2006 12:53:26 PM)

When my wife adn I lived in Florida we missed good mexican food. All we had around Florida was  Chi Chi's or El Torito which was probably what I consider the worst mexican food ever. My Mother would send me packages of dried Ancho chilis and fresh poblano and anahiem chilis so I could make my own Mexican food. We would invite other expratiated Arizonians over for dinner and we would all enjoy a great Mexican feast. Now we have moved back to Arizona and now I miss the fried Catfish and southern BBQ that we enjoyed in Florida, go figure LOL

There was a place on I-10 a number of years ago called Terrys. Incredible hamburgers and shakes. We used to have a Stuckeys on the interstate, but it closed down.
