In classical Greek mythology, Daedalus was a tinkerer, one who was so valued for his skill at weaponry-making that he was imprisoned.  He fashioned wings to help himself and his son Icarus escape, but unfortunately Icarus flew too near the sun and the wax that held the wings on melted.
