3PM TODAY
What did you do last Memorial Day at 3 PM ? What will you do today at 3 PM ?
After Gen. John A. Logan national commander of Grand Army of the Republic May 5th 1868 officially proclaimed Memorial Day...I doubt all the sales and cookouts is what he had in mind. Congress passed a resolution in Dec. 2000 in the hope of America turning back to the true meaning of Memorial Day. It asks that in an act of national unity that all Americans, everywhere, at 3 PM local time "voluntarily and informally observe in their own way a Moment of rememberence and respect, pausing from whatever they are doing for a moment of silence or listening to taps." Will you ?

A childhood girlfreind told the whole neighborhood, in order to celebrate the 4th of July-I painted my cock red white and blue. LOL

For months I got razzed about that.

Memorial day?  IMO=- just an excuse for walmart- and malls to encourage sales.

My grandfather- when he passed away. We found stuff. He never talked about the ww2. We found some pictures. One was profound. He and 7  others guarding the enola gay. I upset a few by mentioning this on a california board a few years ago.

ww2 vets MADE America. we ride the coattailes of their service.

My grandfather would not speak to me for 15 years. [my gay thing] But I did/do love him.

My dad served during the Cuban missile crises. I miss him too.

An uncle was a CIA man. I would pump him for info. He simply would say, "you do not need to worry about a thing".  When I posed various scenarios to him- all he would do is smile. Never clueing me in. Uncle Jim, I did not get to know you well- but I deeply respect you service.
[deaths not service connected]

Going back a few generations- my kin faught on both sides of the civil war. Uncle against uncle.

Some colorfull folks.... moonshiners, minister, and a conman- slick as hell. Bloodline lineage to royalty...which I am not sure I believe.

The Polish side came over and the Ellis Island. Where they broke down is where they would call home. They broke down in Chicago.
At the time, Poles could not get work. So my clan changed thier name to an English name. When my dad was of age- he returned our last name to the origanal polish name. People at work once layed in to me about xxxxxxxxxxxxxxSKI.  I said there is a story behind that name. I am proud of it. My dimwit cousin argues with me to this day that the original day that our real name is English and that my dad changed it to xxxxski.

I dont have anything per military... ----I served in Americore. Which is like the Peace Core. But stationed in the USA, and not a fighter entity.

As to what I am doing.... I wont be doing traffic. I wont be doing malls.

Todays regime- is not the America my kinfolk faught for. They would roll in the grave to see the USA today.

I hate current USA foreign policy. And I love and THANK EVERY VETERAN for serving.

Veterans rock!  A hug and a big thank you to ALL who served. Thank you!

Turbo

It is something like what happened to Christmas. While not delving into the divinity of Christ (I am not Christian), Christmas was supposed to be the celebration of His birth, whether divine or not, he probably was the greatest Man that ever lived. Now the joy comes from the children's eyes as the open up the latest video game or other useless presents.

Easter has been similarly bastardized. Supposedly to celebrate the resurrection, or even for a non-believer like me who thinks possible that Jesus was a bad mofo and wasn't dead yet, he showed them ! Good for him. In either case, if any of this happened, the powers that be of the time had to realize that their power was not absolute. Not a bad thing IMO, but what it seems to have become is a tribute to the hard boiled egg.

People who have given their lives to defend this country have my utmost respect and gratitude. They will have it at 3 PM tomorrow. But what about the other 364 days of the year ? Christmas has become the tribute to credit card debt, Easter honors the egg, and now for most people Memorial Day honors the char broiled steak.

I don't do holidays, but since you mentioned it I will try to remember tomorrow at 3 PM to mention just what this day off of work is for. A bunch of people are dead for trying to mantain our way of life, and what is left of our freedom. We owe them a debt which cannot be repaid, unless maybe we too become fighters of one sort or another, and try to right the wrongs in this country instead of fueling the fire of decadence.

My family does not do holidays, I am as likely to have a cookout on any Sunday, on a whim. We buy gifts for each other whenever. "Mom has got to have one of these", and this is in August or something (her birthday is in January, she gets a phone call). In fact we have gotten to the point of specifically NOT exchanging gifts on the day specified (by whom by the way ?).

The spirit of holidays is all but gone. But then why not ? In the case of Thankgiving, I'll try not to get too deep, but I thought it was to be a celebration of friendship between the settlers and the Native Americans. Some friendship, look what happened to them. We might as well call it a victory celebration, that we kicked their ass and took their land. Almost got the genoicide done, but a few of them prevailed. A victory celebration for those who think the world is there for the taking, and indigenous peoples must step aside when we want to move in.

Probably the most honest holiday is Halloween. Supposedly Hallow's Eve, people have no illusions, it is a day to do wierd things to the kids and maybe put a little scare into them here and there and that's it. Who goes to church on Halloween ?

Of course if you go to church on Christmas, opening that $15,000 worth of gifts means so much more doesn't it ? It makes our ersatz opulence seem so deserved, doesn't it ?

Well you can thank those dead soldiers alot more for that than Christ. But then Christ is a dead soldier too, he fought for truth and justice. He paid the ultimate price as well. Knowing full well that he was going to be nailed to a board and hung out to dry, he went willingly. He didn't have an M16 or an Uzi, no tank, no SAMs, no depleted urainium armor piercing weapons, he just went. Sometimes the truest pacifists are the most brave, but I think they are misguided, but the end result, even though I do not believe in forgivness, is that Christ showed the world a thing or three.

Even with all the killing done in Christ's name, I still think the overall effect he had on the world was positive. Many people have learned to coexist and live together in harmony because of the teachings of Christ.

At around 2 PM or so tomorrow I will probably be doing the tribute, to burgers this time. No, times aren't that rough, it's just that for years we had steaks every week for years and frankly I am sick of them. So burgers it is.

But at around 2 PM tomorrow I will try to be around a clock and when it strikes three I will demand that everybody shut the F___ up. For one minute. Somebody is no doubt going to wonder, but they will have to wait until 3:01 PM for the explanation.

That we just gave one minute of our lives for those who have given their whole lives for our way of life. Pitiful I admit, but it is something. Something more than most do.

By the way, what are you going to do.

ROFLMAO!  "tribute to the hardboiled egg"  LOL

My family too does things on  whim. I agree 1000% with your assessment of gifts- and celebrating. [umm minus the Jesus thing- which I am Christian, but questioning that now]

I wish my family would go further on the holiday thing. A gift should be freely given... not a cultural insistence. Cheapens the whole ritual. I really HATE the commericialization of Christmas!

pa- I agree, every time an American looks around and likes what they see they need to thank a vet for it.  It is they who sweated and kept this country alive, not anyone else.  If circumstances were different I'd be in Iraq right now because I would have joined the army or marines long before now.  As it is, I wouldn't make it (health problems) so I do the next best thing, be patriotic, support the troops in anyway I can, and do my best to be a good American.

As to the guarding the Enola Gay, getting bad responses about that doesn't surprise me.  Want to be in an even worse spot?  Defend to those same people the dropping of the bomb then things will really get interesting.

I don't mean to hijack the thread, so if this goes much farther let's start another.

Market forces, that is rich folks seem to have found a way to instill greed in people. As the kids look at those presents not knowing what they are "getting" the anticipation is great.

There is one truism in the world that will not go away, when you operate on your desire to give, someone else operates on their desire to take.

The whole commercialization sucks. It teaches children materialism. Dammit, it even teaches the adults materialism.

Show your love with iPods, PS3s and DVDs. New computers, minibikes, hell let's go all out, boats, cars and houses. My Mom asked me a long time ago, back when our family (the paternal side) used to get together at Grandmas/Grandpas house on Chistmas Eve. Every year I came out of there in pretty good shape. Even at the age of like 7, maybe a hundred, enough clothes for the holocaust and toys out the ass.

The question was "Do you think Grandma Ruth loves you more because she has more money to buy you gifts than Grandma Mary ?". No shit.

Talking about how our family was,,, I will digress as you did. I had a couple of Great Uncles who were Prussian and had been in their army. You could put them in a waterbed and they would sit straight up, almost as if at attention. They would not relax, when you want to relax, go to sleep. They refused to be seen without proper posture.

An aside ; I bet they didn't have any back problems.

Anyway, have a sad Memorial day, at least one minute of it. The rest of it, have a good one.

Somewhat sad that a law had to be passed asking people to observe the moment of silence...here in Canada the law states that you have the right to observe the moment of silence and to stop working, unless your position is one designated as an emergency position.
