Could you please say other religions' beliefs instead of myths? You do talk about your beliefs, not your myths, so I'd really appreciate it if you did the same for those of us who have other beliefs.

Iamsemisweet -> RE: Just a Rant (12/6/2011 5:38:33 PM)

Sure, no prob.  Although, technically, I don't have "beliefs" or myths in that sense.  I am a nonbeliever.  That is kind of the point.

It isn't like Christianity is something to be frightened of.

History would tell us different.  Faith, belief in  higher power and all that jazz is one thing.  But saying "Christianity" invokes organized religion.  And if there's one thing I've learned from history, when you have a large group of people who believe something that they have no possible way to prove; the innate insecurity of their untenable position forces them to lash out.

Might makes right. We beat you which means God is on our side; thus you are heathens and must be saved from yourselves. CONVERT, ASSIMILATE OR DIE.

The very cultural and technological development of our species is based on the entire idea that Christianity, or any other largely held ideological belief is something to be afraid of.

Why are the terrorists not slowing down, even after we cut the head off of the snake?  We're fighting a "War on Terror", they're fighting a "Holy War". While we fight an idea, they fight for the entire basis of their culture (or so they believe, having only selectively read and interpreted the Quran... sounds familiar, doesn't it?) So long as they have the will to continue, no matter how beaten; their faith will not allow them to quietly retreat or stay down.

So yes, I am afraid of Christianity.  It will only take one spark for the masses to decide that to protect their way of life, they must put the heathens down.  And that means atheists, pagans, Jews, gays, kinksters and anybody else who's not like them.

We're living in economically and socially insecure times, it even seems like mother nature is out to get us; all it will take is a charismatic leader with a big enough following that's able to convince them that all that's is bad in their lives is a punishment from god for letting the "others" get away with living their lives.  On that day, you can say goodbye Constitution and goodbye civil rights.

So you go ahead and not be afraid of them, there's too many of them for me not to have a healthy fear.

BBBTBW -> RE: Just a Rant (12/6/2011 6:02:06 PM)

I think the misconception about Christianity is that people tend to look at how so-called Christians act...but everyone that calls themselves a Christian is not a Christian. Christianity is faith based..Faith is believing without seeing.

The whole point of Christianity is not GOD thru man but GOD thru Christ therefore Christianity is not something to be afraid of...However, some of those that call themselves Christians are something to be afraid of.

My relationship with Jesus/GOD is personal, vertical and strong...It has nothing to do with how other "Christians" act or what they say it has to do with my beliefs based upon faith. I take my cues from the actions of Jesus, he spoke and taught, he didn't condemn.

If you equate it with the BDSM lifestyle, not everyone that calls themselves a DOMINANT is a DOM or a DOMME, they are simply DOMINANT or the misconceived DOMINEERING people. Those of us that are who we are based upon natural tendencies and desires don't want to be judged by those are not not good representations of who we are...so why would we judge another person or entity based upon the actions of others.

The minute someone tells me "you can trust me, I'm a Christian", or has the little Christian fish on their business card....I put a hammer lock on my wallet and run like hell.

If you need to tell someone you're a Christian, clearly, there's something missing from the presence you desire to exude.

I've been burned by more Christians (and faith believers) than any other group.

I love Christianity....I wouldn't trust a Christian as far as I could throw one.

(And I'm a Christian).

I don't care what people say. I generally say "Merry Christmas" because that's what the day is marked on the calendar. I think people on both sides get a bit worked up over this stuff.

I mean, here in a month, we have:

Yule

Christmas

Chanukah (please forgive the spelling, Steven, if I fucked it up)

Kwanzaa (I assume there are still a few adherents)

Hell, I think we even had Ramadan one year during early Decenber (forgive me Ashjor if I missed that one).

Yule (and other Pagan midwinter festivals lost to antiquity) was the first of the above celebrated but don't most neopagans talk about tolerance?

Lets all try to get along. I mean if a Jew says to me "Happy Chanukah" I smile and say "and to you also."

I wish my Pagan friends a blessed solstice and tell everyone else Merry Christmas by default even though Im an Agnostic who is pretty certain that the birth of Jesus was much later on (feb/march?)

You forgot festivus for the rest of us : p

Yeah, what an intolerant SOB.  :)

Hillwilliam, you actually can't really misspell Hannukah.  It's simply spelled phonetically from the Hebrew.

Actually she isn't. I don't identify as a Christian. Heck, if i wasn't born Jewish, i wouldn't identify as one either.

"Christ follower" would be more acurate. But i digress.

The problem is, the morons who claim to be Christians and do stupid shit in his name *cough* Westboro Baptist Church *cough* are the ones given the megaphone.

Typically the same goes for other religions and politics.

That is why you don't let people dictate your faith and spirituality. You find your place based upon your personal faith and understanding.

Even the "Westboro Baptist Church" is running scared from those that they oppose...We had a protest/anti-protest in my town a few weeks ago...they sent 6 women and children because they didn't want a fight to break out. They were drowned out by the Anti-protestors....so they virtually have no voice anymore...eventually those who do what they do in the name of Christ but are self-serving or serving another entity are losing.

Off my soap box...this isn't the forum for "REAL Christianity RULES!!!"

LadyPact -> RE: Just a Rant (12/6/2011 7:21:44 PM)

Sorry you had the exchange that brought on the rant.  I do have to kind of wonder if the "sweet little old lady" has Facebook and got the same message that Iamsemisweet received that inspired her to post her thread a couple of weeks ago.  (Stranger things have happened, man.  Just look how chain letters get around.)

BarelynAngel had this thing pegged on page one.  If somebody wishes Me something, I do usually reply in kind.  Part of it, I suppose is PC.  The other part is, if they speak first, I know what they are going to be celebrating and I want them to have a happy time of that.  When I worked weird schedules, I ran into folks saying "happy friday" or "enjoy your weekend" all of the time.  It was Friday on the calendar, but the second day of My work week and I was spending the weekend at work.  Not what most people intend when they use those phrases.  That didn't mean that I couldn't wish them a good time during their weekend off.

As for the rest........ I know.  Believe it or not, Christians are aware of the bad things that other Christians do.  Hell, I'm a female poly sadist.  I'm pretty sure there are some folks out there who don't think I should call Myself a person of faith.  If it comes up because of a subject on a message board; cool.  If a person asks; cool.  Situations other than that, or saying Merry Christmas because I might be the person who speaks first when exchanging pleasantries, whoever I'm interacting with most likely doesn't know.  If I know in advance that you celebrate something else, I may even wish you your greeting that reflects you first.

Maybe the whole holiday greeting debate will be settled when we all just wish each other a Happy New Year.

You misunderstand.  I don't really care whether people "respect" my beliefs or not. I am not demanding people NOT say "merry christmas" to me, or that all religious displays be removed because they might offend me.   Nor am I seeking converts to my way of thinking.  I don't go door to door handing out pamphlets about atheism, for example.  My response to one of the offending facebook posts was one of the rare times that I have publicly announced that I even am an atheist.  By the way, it shows up on my wall, it was intended to show up on my wall, how is it not a wall posting?  I posted on another thread about mentioning my dad was an atheist in a facebook post about planning his funeral, and getting a response from some chick that "he wasn't an atheist now that he had met jesus".  I didn't feel the need to tell her what a tasteless, bullshit thing that was to say, even though it was.  As I recall, I responded rather politely by sending her the beautiful eulogy we read at his funeral.
In any case, I am not necessarily asking for respect for my beliefs, I just wish people would shut the fuck up about theirs.  I am certainly happy to do the same.  Like I said, I am not seeking converts and I don't feel the need to proselytize.  Regardless of your personal beliefs, I find Christian myths (or deeply held beliefs, depending on your point of view) no more credible than tales of Zeus, Hera and Mars.  I don't believe them at all and I want to hear about them even less.
You are probably right about the holiday program blushes, or whoever it was,  was talking about.  Excluding Christianity, while including other religions' myths, was probably not well balanced, if nothing else.  It isn't like Christianity is something to be frightened of.

No, I didn't misunderstand at all.  Whether you are looking to convert people to your beliefs or not, whether you regularly announce your beliefs or not, you are pointedly disrespectful of others beliefs by calling them myths.  You know you are doing it, so please stop pretending that you aren't.  It's comments like that which make people not like atheists.  The constant need to make snide remarks, no matter how subtle.

The difference on Facebook, as I said is subtle.  When you post something as your "status," you are posting to your own wall, and it is visible and will show up on your friends' walls (if they have chosen to see "updates" from you).  It is NOT posting to your wall, or meant specifically for you.  It is posted to the individual person's wall.

Here is where the difference is....someone can specifically post something on YOUR wall.  It will appear differently and while others can see it, they also see that the person was posting directly to you.

I do send off Christmas cards because Walmart does not carry the Solstice ones.  Happy Holidays and Seasons Greetings yes, they carry them.

Isn't Winter Solstice in a sense celebrating a "season?"  I realize that it isn't meant for Winter Solstice, but it certainly would seem to cover it.  A "Season's Greetings" card with a lovely snow scene seems pretty appropriate.  Also, I would think that if you had a Wiccan shop nearby, they might carry the cards you are looking for, or you could easily find them on line.

Actually, no it isn't.  You "believe" that God doesn't exist.  You believe (most likely) in evolution.  You believe you are being subtle in your insults to those who believe in God, by using the word "myths" repeatedly.
