Meth is popular too.  Doesn't mean the state should sell it to raise revenues.

If the populous agreed, and they could find a way to tax it, they would.

The states voted these lottery's in. The people of that state agreed to them.

Lottery winnings are subject to taxes.

Going to have to quote Marx on this one.......Groucho.

"Who are you going to believe, me or your lyin' eyes?"[:D]

When I see people spending their money in tickets I feel sorry for them.Sitting in their cars scratching away and going back for more tickets.I don`t know,it doesn`t look like fun.And it`s gotta add up over years to a lot of money burned.

tazzygirl -> RE: A tax on people that can't do math (12/7/2011 10:01:20 AM)

Winnings, yes. I was referring to the meth.

mnottertail -> RE: A tax on people that can't do math (12/7/2011 10:02:44 AM)

well the math of meth contains alot of variables tazzmeister.

perhaps you could break it down into some simpler albiet incomplete equations.

I agree. But do we really want the government dictating to that extent? Will we then need a pay stub showing "x" amount of earnings to buy beer?

tazzygirl -> RE: A tax on people that can't do math (12/7/2011 10:07:21 AM)

The products used to manufacture meth are all, I would assume, taxed. If the end product could be packaged and sold, without a lost of votes to the politicians who allowed such, then it would be legal, no vote from the public required.

Quick reply:

What is more concerning to me is what he will likely do with the money. He could very easily turn that $250,000 into a minimum of a million dollars inside 18 months, significantly more if he used the "right" investment vehicles to do so. He probably won't though, which is what we should find the most troubling.

hlen5 -> RE: A tax on people that can't do math (12/7/2011 1:19:50 PM)

States usually bring in gambling on the premise that the tax proceeds go to "education". Gambling is like drinking, some people get addicted. When I see people scratching those cards, I think about ramdom reinforcement experiments.

I become a sucker when Megabucks or the Big Game have big pots (Exponentially lowering my chances!!).

Exactly. I take Mirapex (pramiprexole) to help tweak my Dopamine (specifically the D3 receptors) levels. One of the side effects is compulsive gambling (and shopping, and cross-dressing. weird.). (this points to some compulsive behaviors being the result of neurotransmitter "defects")

Now this hasn't happened to me, so far... I'm very good at math and I'm fairly good at monitoring my behavior.

I sure seem to milk the Iguana more than a Chimpanzee with a testosterone IV, though, these days.

Not at all.

Freedom also means free to be foolish.

If a state wants to run a lottery, cool.

If a state doesn`t want to,that`s cool too.

The easiest way to turn your bankroll into a million dollars is to start with two million and lose half.

It's in our culture and our lack of business education. We are shown consumption, so he consumes. We in the US are not taught nearly enough business in HS. Some say 10th grade, I say a start in the eight grade at least a start in business education. Maybe he'd then put most of it in the markets.

Coconut oil is much more versatile. [8D]

How do others feel about state sanctioned gambling?

Its legal as are smoking and drinking. Or eating fatty junk food or sweets or Starbuck lattes. There are many legal addictions, its up to each person to control themselves or abstain entirely if its one of their addictions..

I think i have only purchased a few lotto tickets and that was when i was young, it didnt take long for me to decide i was wasting my money as i had a better chance of being hit by a car..

I think its a free world and if people want to spend their money on that then its their choice.

popeye1250 -> RE: A tax on people that can't do math (12/8/2011 1:19:59 AM)

I'd like to see a little honesty about state lotteries.
"Ok, we couldn't give a shite less about education we just need the fuckin' money!"
And look at the dummies comming out of high schools and colleges!
We need to spend a lot less money on "education!"

Iamsemisweet -> RE: A tax on people that can't do math (12/8/2011 5:50:46 PM)

Here is the problem I have with state lotteries, and the government being in the gambling business at all.

http://www.oregonlive.com/politics/index.ssf/2009/11/oregon_lottery_addicted_to_big.html

The article talks about problem gamblers, and the disproportionate amount of money they "contribute" to the state.  I don't think the states should be in the business of exploiting addicts.  In addition, in many cases, there is a huge social cost.  It isn't just a matter of not being able to pay the bills, it is a matter of people losing their homes, stealing from their employers, and making their families destitute.
