The US announced today an initiative to promote GLBT rights internationally.

http://www.smh.com.au/world/rights-of-gays-to-figure-in-us-foreign-aid-20111207-1oj4l.html

As a frequent , sometimes harsh critic of certain aspects of US foreign policy, it gives me pleasure to applaud this initiative. Only good can come form this. Millions of lives worldwide will be improved. Combating hate and bigotry is a noble enterprise.

Initiatives such as are giant strides in restoring the US's reputation internationally especially after the trashing it received from the previous Administration.

So congratulations USA - Well done!

Cool.  The GOP candidates will trash this, to appeal to their core constituency.  I'm curious if that'll hurt them in the general.

Regardless, this was the right thing to do.

kdsub -> RE: Well done USA! (12/7/2011 8:04:03 PM)

Soooo...does this;

''Promoting special rights for gays in foreign countries is not in America's interests and not worth a dime of taxpayers' money,'' the Texas Governor said.

Mr Obama's administration is ''at war with people of faith in this country'', Mr Perry said. ''Investing tax dollars promoting a lifestyle many Americans of faith find so deeply objectionable is wrong.''

mean Rick Perry thinks not having a death penalty for being gay is a special right?... what an ass.

Well, I'm not "anti-gay" or anything like that but doesn't anyone think that the U.S. is way overstepping it's bounds on this?
Our "reputation" was ruined by us "interfering" in foreign countries; Iraq, Afganistan and a few others. Everyone hates the U.S. now, do you really think something as twisted as this is,....."going to make people like us?" I mean really?
I just don't think it's right when any country gets involved in the internal affairs of foreign countries.
As for "combating hate and bigotry" being a noble enterprize, where are all those foreign countries protecting their own citizens? What happens if they don't want to bow down to the U.S., more troops abroad? More wars? Can you just see Achmadinajad in Iran hanging ten homos just to prod us into war?
Sorry but I'm not responsable for the health and welfare of foreign nationals.
When is a foreign country going to start doing things for us?
Even if stuff like this didn't involve one Taxpayer penny I still wouldn't want to get involved in something like this.
It's just more of that "feel good" B.S.!
"Cum-bay-ah,...Cum-bay-ah."
If you want to buy the world a coke fine, do it with you own money.

I would like to respond pops, but could you first clarify exactly what is "twisted" about this initiative for me please?

You're assuring me that you're not anti-gay - and I'm happy to take your word for it - so that word is kind of throwing me, confusing me a bit - especially in the context you've located it.

So yes a little clarification please. Thanks.

Moonhead -> RE: Well done USA! (12/8/2011 5:07:47 AM)

Look who you're talking to: coherence is too much to hope for, never mind consistency...

kdsub -> RE: Well done USA! (12/8/2011 7:00:53 AM)

popeye… you know what I think of foreign aid but I see nothing wrong with condemning violations in human rights…And… if we feel it necessary to bribe people for their allegiance then we could and should demand they uphold these basic rights. If they don’t want to fine they don’t have to take our money.

Tweak, "twisted" is taking the taxpayer's money and using it for social programs in foreign countries. And now, "internationally" which could mean any country.

Do you realize how contradictory your posts are?

You constantly complain  about the US giving foreign aid.

Now you are complaining that we are limiting foreign aid in countries that discriminate.

You've contradicted yourself in this very post.

Tweak, "twisted" is taking the taxpayer's money and using it for social programs in foreign countries. And now, "internationally" which could mean any country.

If that's what you really meant by "twisted", then I hope you can see that it's a really unfortunate choice of words. It's precisely the kind of term used to disparage GLBT people throughout history. By using it, you are running the risk of being seen as a bigot. I'm sure you'd prefer to avoid that.

American efforts are not going to promote "social programs". Nor do I see any extra taxpayer money being spent here:
"Caitlin Hayden, a spokeswoman for the National Security Council, said: ''We are not talking about cutting aid or tying aid, but we are talking about using all of our tools, including assistance, to translate our principles into action.''
"The memorandum said the US aimed to improve refugee and asylum protections for gay, bisexual and transgender people. It also called for strengthening US efforts to oppose foreign governments criminalising homosexuality, bisexuality or transgender behaviour."*

It surprises me that you decline to view this area as one of human rights. Hilary Clinton, when she launched the program was pretty specific about framing this as a human rights issue, saying:
'Being LGBT does not make you less human, and that is why gay rights are human rights and human rights are gay rights,'' *

Putting human rights back on the agenda is precisely the type of initiative that will help win back the respect of the world. Surely me starting this thread is a fragment of evidence of that. It will help restore the US to the position of moral leadership that it used to enjoy until Gitmo, Abu Ghraib, torture, extraordinary renditions, the Patriot Act etc. came along. Helping to make real improvements in millions of queer lives around the world is surely a commendable goal in itself.

To me, it's odd that you, as an American, can find fault with that, especially for reasons that appear to be misapprehensions.

Yes, "twisted." I think most people in the U.S. would agree that this current govt. is fuckin' twisted.
As for "Bigot" I get called that in here frequently by the lefties when they can't argue with me. That's what "bigot" means; "I don't agree with your opinion and I can't win an arguement with you so fuck it, I'll just call you a bigot and run along to the next argument."
That lady (Caitlin Hayden) seems to be referring to "assistance", is that in anyway "foreign aid?"
As for "refugee and Asylum" programs I'd like to see all of them ended. Look at that maid in NYC who almost ended that Frenchman's career! She said the was "raped in her home country." Turns out she was lying. Those programs are LOADED with scams!
Now if there is one area where I really am BIGGOTTED it's against U.S. govt. employees who sit behind desks and make lousey decisions!
Why wasn't that maid vetted completely and rejected? Are they fucking lazy or do they just not care? And that shit is more the norm than the exception. Those idiots will let "anyone" in and when something bad happens it's, "nerver their fault."
We need to tell everyone we're ending those programs and give a list of countries that they can go to instead. "No more U.S." Watch the applications drop exponentially.
And as an American I find fault with many things in this country not the least is something called "moral leadership." Where did *that* term come from?
And as for; "win back the respect of the world?" Do you really think the taxpayers give a fiddler's damn what "the world" thinks? Why would we want them to respect us? Is that a "building bridges to the twentieth century" statement that doesn't mean anything but sounds nice?
Oh sure, "moral leadership", that'd go over big at the American Legion hall on a sat. night!
That all sounds like manipulation to try to get the U.S. to do what foreigners want.
This is a *local law enforcement problem* that needs to be taken care of by those foreign countries, not by the U.S. or any other country.
I support Gay Marriage, ...in this country! Sorry but I just don't *care* what they do in foreign countries and I don't want to give them *one penny* of my tax money.
This kind of thing is going to be another reason why Oblunder gets ejected from the white house in Nov. of next year.

slvemike4u -> RE: Well done USA! (12/8/2011 6:14:16 PM)

Pops where the fuck do you get off positing what "most people in the US would agree "on".How the fuck do you know what "most people in the US" are thinking?
Have you conducted some sort of poll ? Or is this simply the result of what you hear when you hang around with whatever other miserable old fucks who would waste their time hanging around a bitter old man like you?

tweakabelle -> RE: Well done USA! (12/8/2011 6:41:31 PM)

Pops, you're certainly entitled to your view. It saddens me that it is so negative, and that you feel so bitter.

When I opened this thread, I had hoped that this could be something we could all agree was a good thing. I was very happy to be able to praise US foreign policy without any reservations for a change. I really can't see a downside for any one in this initiative - bar the bigots. I though this was one issue where we could all come together. (Wouldn't that be nice!!!) [:D]

Contrary to your view that the rest of the world "hates" the US, my feeling, and my observation of others' feelings is, far from hating the US, most people want to like the USA. It's just that sometimes you guys make it a little difficult.

So please, put your wallet back in your pocket, open your heart a bit and let the rest of the world like you. What's not to like about being liked?

defiantbadgirl -> RE: Well done USA! (12/8/2011 6:47:08 PM)

Have you ever heard the saying you have to love yourself before you can love anyone else? Well, many people think that saying also applies to help. With the US economy the way it is, we can't afford to help other countries.

slvemike4u -> RE: Well done USA! (12/8/2011 7:20:11 PM)

Actually the real truth is that we can't afford to not help other countries.
Of course to wrap your head around that you would first have to accept that we don't actually just "give" money away.
