Personally, I have to have a cell and a landline, because cell phones don't work where I live. But when I move closer to town, I am wondering if I need both. Are landlines still relevant, at least where there is good cell coverage?

I was one of the first guys I know to cut the landline-it seemed redundant to pay for a cell and a land line, but I gotta tell ya, after the East Coast earthquake I'm rethinking things.
So many people got on simultaneously it wiped out the grid and that ain't cool because an emergency is when I'm gonna want my phone most, not least.
The experience has me reconsidering...
So no, I'm not going to just dismiss a landline as unnecessary, which I may have a few months ago

I haven't had a landline in over 15 years. Haven't missed it and haven't found it necessary. When I did have a landline the only people who called it were telemarketers. Nope, don't miss that one tiny bit.

Thats what made us go back to a landline. We now have both again.

Even when we had the earthquake I never felt a need to go back to a landline. I had internet service so I just contacted my family through that and I was able to text through my cellphone. I just couldn't receive or make calls.

I think the only one of my family members who still has a landline is my dad. The rest of us have gone to cell.

I have a cell but its unreliable in many places i have been so i tend to use SKYPE on my laptop. My cell right now is just for emails since those come thru but phone calls dont. Some people use yahoo messenger for calls now too, i am sure there are others as well..

We have both.  The military relay calls from overseas can only go to a land line (as far as I'm aware).  My son is in the middle of a two year tour in Germany.  The land line stays until that's over.

I've had just a cellphone for 7 years.

After Hurricane Wilma in 2005, cell service was interrupted for a few days and cable, including our Internet, for longer. IIRC, there were less complaints about landline providers than Comcast. (We also didn't have water for 24 hours or power for 5 days - we were lucky - my boss lost it for 3 weeks.)

At one point we looked into ADT alarm service, which they could provide without a landline, but for a much higher rate. Fortunately, we didn't hear from the crazy stalker chick again so the point was moot.

I still believe landlines are valid. I do think they tend to be more stable during disasters. When people overcrowd a network in one area, sometimes that traffic gets diverted to other areas in the network and can bog things down for more people than just those who are immediately affected.

Several towers were turned off here during the MO river flooding, which caused issues for quite a few people. Yeah there's email, but that's not always the fastest way to reach someone.

I have both. Cell for most of the time and a landline for the fax and other things.

I have both. I use the landland for most of my calls, and only use the cell in the car for hooking up with someone on time or long distance travel.

I have good land line service, and a cheapie cell phone, which works just fine for me. But then, I don't need my cell to bake bread, or play a movie.

i've only had a mobile for about 10yrs now. i used to have both until the landline company billed me a load of call i didn't make. i could prove no-one had been in my house and that i was away when most of the calls were made. they insisted that the calls were made from my phone and that i owed that money. i told them to disconnect the line and take me to court. the did the first but not the latter. strangely, about sixth months later the phone, which was still plugged in, started making strange noises. when i picked it up it had a dial tone. when i complained to the company the denied all knowledge of it.

i use a dongle for my internet and always have my mobile on me, well most of the time anyway.

Same here, though for less years for the same reason LadyP has a land line. Before G.D. retired from the military, when he was traveling the world, we had to have a land line for him to call home.

I have both land and cell and I will keep them because during a power outage that lasted here for a week, the only thing that worked was my landline.

I had that happen too, a long time ago, the charge was not a large amount ($15) but the phone company was insisting we made those long distance calls. Then shortly after i complained i picked up the phone and could hear 2 people talking to each other and i would try to hang up to get a dial tone but it wouldnt hang up. I had to call the phone company on my cell but if i had not picked up the phone at that exact time, who knows how long it would have gone on for. They eventually reversed the charges and the best explaination was something about crossed lines.. [8|]

I've been landline-less for almost a year now, and don't feel I'm missing anything crucial.
I too was a victim of supposed crossed lines, and had 3 occurrences where the police showed
up at my door asking if everything was ok. Somehow my phone was mysteriously calling 911.
Their only explanation was crossed signals, which still leaves me feeling antsy in the event I
actually did need to call 911.

There have been a few occasions where I wish I had that big headset to rest on my shoulder,
as sometimes long conversations can tend to make my hand go numb.

I live in a pretty rural area as well, and my cell phone coverage was fine bouncing off
the Nextel tower, but when I switched to a Sprint phone, they had to send me one of
those Airave doohickeys (at no cost) so I no longer have to sit in the cane fields to connect.

I have both a cell and landline.

The landline is necessary for the fax and my family in Canada (as calling a UK cell number from North America is horrifically expensive).

We have both. For the work I do a landline is necessary. (cell phones are notoriously unreliable, and many companies won't hire girls who don't have a dedicated land line.) I have a pretty purple Blackberry for when I'm out and about. [:D]
