I think when people come on here spewing venom but are too afraid to say what it is they want to say so they hide behind a sock, the IP address and any other accounts on it should be moderated. I do understand some people live together, and that would have to be dealt with on a case by case basis.

I have had some sock puppet accounts over the years, but they were just for fun (I used my socks for good and not evil!) so I'd hate to have that priveledge taken away from us over some people who can't keep their nasty thoughts to themselves. It's really not acceptable (imo) to hide behind some fake username to say what it is you're too afraid to say (because it violates TOS and/or noone would respect you after that) using your "real" identity.

What do you think?

GreedyTop -> RE: Dirty Socks and Those Who Wear Them (12/8/2011 11:20:44 AM)

what you said, Chrissy..

tazzygirl -> RE: Dirty Socks and Those Who Wear Them (12/8/2011 11:21:25 AM)

Case by case? Nothing stops bullshit like this in a house with more than one user than a moderation. People tend to get pissed at the one who screwed it up for the whole group.

LaTigresse -> RE: Dirty Socks and Those Who Wear Them (12/8/2011 2:27:30 PM)

I think that you either have to ban all or none. But there is no reliable way to do so, therefore it is a moot point.

When an account is moderated or banned, is it done by the account or by the IP address?

I am admin on a sports forum, we can either ban an IP, a user name, or an email address. I am dont know if CM`s admin board allows for this, but many forums do.

As for sock puppets, my findings in the five years I have been admin is most of them are trolls. Often users on suspension chancing their arm by using a proxy server.

xxblushesxx -> RE: Dirty Socks and Those Who Wear Them (12/8/2011 5:26:48 PM)

I believe (just from observing the kevvie fiasco) that first they ban your user name and/or email address. (probably user name)
This is for "bans" that last a specific time, and they expect us to respect that. Most of us do. But sometimes people don't. Then they have to go with the IP address.
This is all just a guess from observing a few things (most specifically lately the kevvie conundrum)

Toppingfrmbottom -> RE: Dirty Socks and Those Who Wear Them (12/8/2011 5:36:05 PM)

I agree that those who make socks to stir up shit and cause trouble need to have those socks banned.

I have no problem with socks that are cute and funny or when you got a pressing issue you want to discuss and you don't want it tied to your original name, for the sake of anononimity, or because there's certain cliqs of people who will haunt you with what you said many months and maybe years down the line, but to cause shit nope.

Toppingfrmbottom -> RE: Dirty Socks and Those Who Wear Them (12/8/2011 5:38:29 PM)

I read on fetlife where it's not possible to permanently ban Ip's because they are ever changing.

Here's the problem with that.  Let's say I decide that I need to make a mess of the place and I get moderated for it.  I do it all on My own and MP has nothing to do with it.  Why should his posting privileges be suspended just because I've been an ass?

It would be nice to think that even the folks that get banned would have the integrity not to jump on another account just to avoid a temporary ban, but we all know how that works out.

outhere69 -> RE: Dirty Socks and Those Who Wear Them (12/8/2011 6:22:14 PM)

Well, everyone knows that washing machines eat left socks.  Perhaps that would help?

ShaharThorne -> RE: Dirty Socks and Those Who Wear Them (12/8/2011 6:28:46 PM)

No, that is dryers that eat the socks.

Exactly and you and MP are the perfect example of two people using the same computer where neither is a puppet.

As for the IP address thing........I use 4 different computers on a regular basis. They could ban the IP of one but then I could just get on another. Also, I know for sure that one of them does change IP addresses regularly. The other three I don't know because they do not need to allow other computers access.

xxblushesxx -> RE: Dirty Socks and Those Who Wear Them (12/8/2011 6:48:34 PM)

Like someone else said, when people do share IP addresses, it gives everyone in the household even more reason not to behave badly.
HM and I share an IP (although it's been years since he's posted) but if he were a regular here, I'd do my darn best to never make it where he couldn't post if he wanted to.

LaTigresse -> RE: Dirty Socks and Those Who Wear Them (12/8/2011 7:14:11 PM)

And many of us use multiple computers with multiple IP addresses. In addition to computers that take it upon themselves to change IP addresses all by themselves.

The IP address is basically worthless in this regard.

Then there are some situations where if you travel about, accessing the net from different locations, as most of us do...........the IP can change based upon your location.

I remember when I used to have my email set to log the IP addresses of those emailing me. One person that emailed me on a regular basis, traveled all the time. Her IP address was never the same unless she stayed put.

The IP address is basically worthless in this regard.

Welllllllllll, that is trippy as hell. The window went wonky in the middle of my post...........said the site I was searching for could not be found and then double posted but with the rest of the post I was writing as a flipping quote!

Actually the IP most use is a private IP address that ususally starts with 10. 172. or 192.168. because we still use the IPV4. Because there isnt enough IP addresses to cover the people who use the internet.

What IP gets published is the IP of the Internet provider, for example you have comcast. You have an internal address like 192.168.0.1, your public ip is shared by everyone in your area who has comcast, because its cheaper for comcast to do that.

so unless CM has a way to get a hold of an isp and find out which user of which private ip sceme is using what IP its extremely difficult because of the fact that most people have the ip of 192.168.0.1 or similar.

Be at peace

tazzygirl -> RE: Dirty Socks and Those Who Wear Them (12/8/2011 8:40:25 PM)

Which is why blushes posted "real" identity.

xxblushesxx -> RE: Dirty Socks and Those Who Wear Them (12/8/2011 9:03:18 PM)

Right. And that's a whole other issue entirely. But the majority of us have the same IP addresses unless we move. I wasn't trying to solve everything. (although if you give me enough time and chocolate...)
