I am going to give my sub an anklet to subtly show that she is owned. My question is which ankle should she wear it on or does it even matter?

It depends. Who are you trying to show that she is owned, and what are their requirements?

Ultimately it's up to you.

Anklets have an association with prostitution - I'm pretty sure it's a false association, but some people (often a slightly older generation) perceive an ankle chain as a sign of loose morals at least, or a signal that the wearer is a prostitute. This is silly and stupid, but I thought I'd raise it simply because it's likely that some people would draw that inference.

The wikipedia entry for anklet also claims that in cuckold/swinging cultures the anklet is a sign that the wearer is a participant (again I've no clue if this makes sense).

I can't remember where, but I'm sure I've read that some people wear it on the same side as their wedding ring - so on the left if taken, on the right if single.

But... I'm pretty sure all of the above is a mixture of prejudice and urban myth - so my advice is choose the side that appeals the most to you!

I've never heard the prostitution thing.
But my grandmother wouldn't let me wear
one when I was a teenager because she
thought they were vulgar. I always
interpreted that as when she was
coming up they were associated with "loose"
women.
I've never heard of the swinger/cuckold
thing either.
I wear them in the summer. Usually
one on my left ankle but sometimes
one on each ankle or two on the left.
So who knows what I've been
unknowingly signaling?!
I think if it were a gift from a partner
I would wear it on my left. That's the
side the heart is on.

You're referring to the hanky code, I believe. Something that originated 40 odd years ago in the gay community to indicate what they were into at a time when just going up to someone in a bar and saying you were interested could get you arrested. Since homosexuality was not legal in this country until 1969 at the earliest. And much later in certain states.

This is no longer applicable and I suggest she tries it and sees which one it is most comfortable on.

I would have said it didn't matter, I had no idea of these other things that some other posters have brought up. Fascinating. I tend to wear anklets on my left leg only, not sure why, just like it better there.

As I have always been told.... The idea of ankle jewelry is based on the principle of slavery. So to remind the person wearing it that they are bound. As to the right or left, well I can only base this on something else. There is a psychological bit in play beyond just the idea of "slave" Many years ago when elephants were trained for things like circuses they would, when the animal was small, put a very heavy chain around its ankle. As the animal got larger they would use a light chain and then a rope. The animal once grown still believed it carried the heavy chain even if it was just a light rope or ribbon. Commonly if the rope was around the right ankle it meant the animal could be rented out to someone else, while the left ankle meant the animal was only for the amusement of its owner. I would think in this day and age that you would be able to pick the side you like better but many may think something else when they see which side it is on.

It does matter. The ankle upon which the jewelry is worn indicates political ideology. Wearing on the left ankle means she's a hardcore conservative. Wearing it on the right means she's a radical liberal. Wait... is it the other way around?? How does that hanky thing work again?? Oh nevermind.

I was always told that an anklet meant you were a prostitute. When I was a teenager my mum was horrified when I came home one day with one.

The red light district where I live is close to a residential area, and it was an easy way for the punters to tell the working girls apart from the respectable women who had to walk through that area to get home.

But like many things that idea seems to have fallen by the wayside. Now they just accost any woman walking through that area and the local papers then get filled with complaints and the crack down starts.

However I have never been stopped by a man and asked how much I charge for sex just because I wear an anklet in the summer.

Well, according to the gay hanky code, the left side means you're a Top and the right side means you're a bottom. The color(s) of hankies represents what you're "into." I don't know how that would translate for slave bells, but there ya go.

Actually I rather enjoy taking the wrist to ankle four points and hooking the boys to each other so they all have to move in time, agreeing about each of their movements. I find it teachs them to work as a team and not to argue amongst themselves.
