SweetSarijane -> Obsession With Train Wreck and Moronic/Idiotic Threads. (5/28/2006 8:55:51 PM)

Ok, in light of some of the "winner" threads that have cropped up lately and gone on for pages and pages and pages seeming neverending, I'd like to hear individual views on your obsession with these kind of threads.

I admit to a compulsive obsession to read them and see the newest replies especially to the ones started by newbies to the site who think they know it all or are simply always right. I generally restrain my itchy fingers from replying, but alas, sometimes I just can't not reply.

Why do so many of us keep these threads going, giving the OP the attention it seems they want, instead of just ignoring them or not posting and letting them fade into oblivion?

I've been so curious about this for so long and I just can't keep myself from asking it any longer.

The floor is open to any and all who wish to respond.

When one of these threads is started by a neophyte with an axe to grind, it's often the case that people don't realize what's going on until a page or two have already gone by.

And some of the other train-wreck threads aren't really train wrecks at all.  Or, one person's train wreck is another person's fascinating discussion.  What bothers me, frankly, is when someone interrupts one of those discussions merely to opine that the topic is stupid and everyone should let it rest.  (Moderating contentious boards like this one must be a nightmare.)

I usually post once and move on, sometimes twice, but not very often.  After a couple of pages go by, the topic gets changed, and by the time it has reached 4 or 5 pages, I can't even remember the original question.

It seems that often the threads with the most overall views and posts are the ones that have generated a lot of animosity and contention, and often times stupidity.   It's the rubberneck syndrome... people do seem to love a train wreck.

SweetSarijane -> RE: Obsession With Train Wreck and Moronic/Idiotic Threads. (5/28/2006 9:48:30 PM)

I agree that one person's train wreck may be another's fascinating discussion. I've felt that way about certain ones myself that others denigrated.

With this thread I'm focusing on the more obvious, outrageous, out for attention any way it can be gotten, wanting to stir shit and rile people up type threads and along those lines.

Sometimes all I can do is shake my head and wonder at some of them.

Yes they do......me included sometimes. It's almost compulsary on some of them.

Rubberneck syndrome......I like that *grin*

For better or for worse, people who do that tend to say things that land them on moderation pretty quickly.  A few of them have even been banned, I think.

Dear SweetSarijane, Ladies and Gentlemen;

It is my personal opinion that agrees, that these individuals who come under many names, to use a forum as to stir up trouble, is no different than little boys/girls sticking a stick into an ant hole, as to cause the response of the nest and thus amuseing themselves.

I find little difference with the afore said sort of individual and, those who constantly have nasty and personal attacks on specific individuals.  Just, a single ant but, still wanting to create attention to themselves at another's expense.

It is so easy to create a new screen name and delete it once discovered.  I can only assume, people can create as many as they want.  Only people's intent makes it good and or evil.

Respectfully submitted for consideration,
Lady Hugs

That is true...

The most recent one on this section that I replied to was the "are you a real fake or a fake fake?"  and I thought it was one of those online-tests.  So, I went off to read it.  It was not.

Now if it is a serious question. . . and one that I can give a serious response to, I will do my best.  But in this case, I was not sure what the question was (nor did anyone else) and so I gave a smart-ass reply

I think that it is a case of let him/her come up up with the est retortt.

True and let's not forget the new accounts that come straight to the boards with some of these. Some of those new accounts that are, obviously or not, posters hiding behind a new identity to stir things up and grind axes.

SweetSarijane -> RE: Obsession With Train Wreck and Moronic/Idiotic Threads. (5/29/2006 5:19:34 AM)

I got pulled in with that one myself and made a couple of replies. I read it forward, backward, sideways, didn't have much luck in really understanding what the OP said. Got a basic clue finally on what was said but still not sure my brain fully processed it.

SweetSarijane -> RE: Obsession With Train Wreck and Moronic/Idiotic Threads. (5/29/2006 5:23:25 AM)

Definitely agreed Lady Hugs. And until it's done too many times and finally caught on to, as I understand it yes they can just keep coming up with new accounts and names.

There are quite a few that end up like that and some you just can't grasp what the OP is trying to say and so it never really can stay on topic.

I guess I should sit back and ignore such threads and turn the other cheek as they say. The problem for me is I get sick of those that come here obsessed with the idea that Collarme is just some kind of kinky dating agency. Most people that are new to the site don’t even realise that the site isn’t only about meeting people it also a place to express you opinions and views. Therefore I reserve my right to express mine that such people bore me and they will only know that if I reply to them. I’m sorry if the fact that I reply to such threads bores others but it is just like a reflex action these days and I can’t help it.

Besides what I just said if people post serious points of view on a section dedicated to humour they are asking for a silly reply really aren’t they.

I know what you mean. Those types of threads irritate me very much. New ones who come on to the boards and start in on people who have active profiles and state they aren't looking for more than friends and to spend time in the forums saying they should delete or deactivate their profiles so as to make it easier for those actually using the site for what it's intended for.

No need to apologize here. I started this thread to get peoples reasons for doing it not condemn them for doing it. Just makes me very curious when I see it over and over. Generally I can resist the temptation to do more than read it, but some just beg me to interject something.

Yep.  But speaking in code under a new screen name and rehashing old issues is getting tiring to those involved (and those trying not to be involved).  It's time for some posters among us to fully let go of the past.

Gauge -> RE: Obsession With Train Wreck and Moronic/Idiotic Threads. (5/29/2006 8:38:51 AM)

I don't honestly find responding to those types of posts a waste and giving the OP what they want. I view threads like that sort of like the leather strap at a barber shop; I get to sharpen my wit on the miserable cretins. [:D]

RavenMuse -> RE: Obsession With Train Wreck and Moronic/Idiotic Threads. (5/29/2006 8:48:30 AM)

The sock puppet thing is a recuring problem on many boards, there is only one way to deal with it... report and ignore whilst the Mods do their job. They have ways and means to check and if they are convinced then deletion follows.... the offending thread, the sock puppet and usualy the persons main account as they ban the muppet from the site.

Throwing a tantrum on the board in responce only serves to feed the problem and get the responce that it was aimed to get, plus getting other posters at loggerheads.

(Speaking from forums where I have modded in the past, not specificaly CM)

darq -> RE: Obsession With Train Wreck and Moronic/Idiotic Threads. (5/29/2006 8:57:55 AM)

Hmm ... I think a lot of those threads get as much attention as they do because they stir up people's emotions.

If you agree with something someone has said is there really much point in a 12 page list of people saying "yes, you're right"?

But if something is said that you dont agree with, that offends you, or is just absurd ... You're more likely to get 12 pages of people expressing their distaste or expressing their point of view. Its not really an obsession ... Its human nature.
