well...not really, since there were seven of us (five tweens and 2 adults) and we still lost.

You may have seen this sundae (and the bad ending) on Man vs Food

And this is (partially) why there is an obesity epidemic. The idea of challenging one person to eat more food than the 7 of you could consume appalls me.

I love my ice cream, don't get me wrong, but I limit myself to a certain bowl size.

That is 5 times too big for me alone.

I'm sorry you were appalled kalikshama. This is something my daughter has wanted to do (and planned for) as a birthday celebration for over a year. It was a fun happy time. They were kids having fun and something they will remember and talk about for a long time.
A ONCE IN A LIFETIME birthday celebration is very far from what is causing obesity in this country. I guarantee that.
You've already railed against holiday goodies (both getting and giving) so I know how you feel about these types of things. I don't feel the same. You'd be really appalled at the yummy gifts I make (and send out as gifts) every year around this time. Luckily, we don't all have to agree.

Rather have fat people stay and judgmental people leave.

Kalika, that isnt causing the obesity problem... the inability to stop eating is. A business offering a massive size desert is not the problem... nor is it designed to have people come back week after week after week to try again

I wouldn't say that's the entire reason why people are overweight, kali -- Americans have a very odd relationship with food; it's more complicated than a single issue.
You have poor, inner-city people who can buy an automatic firearm with more ease than a tomato, who basically exist on highly processed foods.
You have people who have access to so much food, they no longer view it as fuel, but as an emotional aid, recreation (these kinds of food challenges fall in this category -- eating massive quantities of food is "fun"? why?), status, etc -- If you can afford to eat a 16 oz steak, well, why not, right?

I love ice cream and stuff like that, but that much ice cream and eventually your mouth and young go numb and you can't taste it and it's just such a waste of food. Unless of course someone was sharing it with you, and then it wouldn't be so bad, but it's still more than I'd care to eat.

A friend of mine who is slim and (get this bit) stops eating when she is no longer hungry went to america a few years ago. When she only ate less than half the massive portion served to her a couple of waitresses were actually angry that she had left so much food. Most of them were confused and wouldn't accept that there was nothing wrong with the food, and one even got the chef out to apologise! Unbelievable

well it certainly looks lovely. not something i could tackle by myself, but something to share with others, then yeah.

if i didn't mind being hugely overweight i could get there very easily. i love my food even though i'm very faddy surrounding it. i'm not one of those people who sees it as just fuel and only eats when hungry. i can go all day and not eat. i've gone months were i've hardly eatten anything, and i have days where all i want to do is eat. my appitite is very tetchy and i can be put off very easily. but, once i've made my mind up i want to eat, and what i want to eat then i can eat alot. it never ceases to amaze me how people can be very judgemental about overweight people. they have no problem accepting the adiction of drugs, fags, drink and the like, but they can't get it in their heads just how addictive eating can become. alot of addiction is as much about the ritual surrounding it as much as the 'fuel'.

cheap processed food is as much to blame for obesity as cheap alcohol is for alcoholism, or cheap drugs are for drug addicts. it's nothing to do with what is available, it's all to do with the person and their makeup. the thing with addiction is this; you don't ever have to take a drink of alcohol again, or smoke a fag, or take drugs. but you will always have to eat. this is why dieting is so hard. ok we can all say that the best thing is to not get that way in the first place, but for some it's just not that easy. for some it's because they enjoy their food so much and prefer being over weight. things are not simple.

places like this ice-cream place are not to blame for weight problems.

I do think eating contests (other than the pie eating at the fair type) are a horrible misuse of food, but how fun for a birthday!!

Was it good ice cream?

Hey, Christina, if you have any of the ice cream left, send it over here.

15 scoops, 20 kids... all the trimmings... cheap and different from a cake.

Years ago, when I lived in New York, there was an Ice Cream shoppe called "Jahn's" (Maybe 2 "H"s?). They had something called "The Kitchen Sink (corrected)" which was something like 5 pints (?) of ice cream. It was huge and the rules were only one person could take the challenge. When I was younger (12 years old), my guardians would always tease me about trying to finish one.

The deal was: if you finished one, you got another one, free (had to be consumed at that time. It could not be taken home in a "doggie bag"). I think the thing cost $9.99 in 1976 dollars (That's when I was 12). Even then, I couldn't understand the point but, the feeling of a challenge over-came me and I did it on my birthday. I was sick as a dog for a couple of days, afterwards.

About 2 years ago, my youngest son (then 21) was living with me. A new ice cream parlor opened up, nearby and they had a similar challenge. The only differences were you could have up to three people, helping you eat 2 gallons of ice cream and you had to accomplish it in less than an hour.

My son, the twisted little masochist that he is, kept insisting that he wanted to try it and that I should help him. I related my "Jahn's story" to him but he was unmoved.

Finally, for his birthday, I figured: what the hell! I approached it from a different point of view and did not eat enough to make myself sick but my son was not quite as lucky. We didn't complete the challenge. We needed one more person and we would have done it.

Was it fun? Sure! Would I do it, again? I guess I could be convinced in a similar manner to how my son convinced me (which is why my grandson and I have never driven by the place).

Peace and comfort,

Michael

I think you misunderstood me - or perhaps I misunderstood you. I thought the 7 of you tried (and failed) to eat one that you shared. I don't see anything wrong with that.

I think you've also confused me with someone else - or perhaps you can point me towards my posts "railing" against holiday goodies. I do recall making one about rampant consumerism - totally different than the homemade goodies I do intend to make and receive with pleasure.

I did condemn using pepper spray against fellow Black Friday shoppers.
