My question is simple--after a severe spanking on my bare bottom with a paddle, is there a clear danger of the bruises eventually turning to blood clots with the danger of them becoming fatal embolisms?

I would think its always a possibility, but I've never heard of it happening.

I will have to guess that by fatal embolism you mean a pulmonary embolism? Pulmonary embolisms are caused by deep vein thrombosis, which is rarely caused by strike trauma. There are a lot of risk factors that can lead to dvt, or a embolism......

prolonged emmobility
age
family history
surgery
heart disease
pregnancy
cancer
a history of blood clots
smoking
being over weight
supplemental estrogen
*none of the list say you will get one, just that it raises the risk.

Of course having said that if you take part in activities that put, or could put, you in harms way than there is always a chance that harm might come to you. The best way to note your risk is to speak to your doctor.

(side note) shouldn't this be in health and safety?

More likely to just  become an unsightly hematoma but how a surface bruise could cause a clot in a vein escapes me.

Yeah, that is the problem with questions that aren't really clear. I mean impact, or crush, trauma could cause a blood clot but there isn't much of a chance that a person can hit someone that hard. The op said severe though so my mind went to the most extreme thing I could think of. Don't think the op is being hit with a bat though?

Hi rabiah
I'm going to read a little between the lines here...

So embolisms--pulmonary, venous, brain etc. (any place on the body where you have vascular structure, you run a risk for embolism--for you non-medical folks, let's call it a "clot" to keep it simple--a clot in your blood vessels that blocks a vessel in your lungs, heart, brain etc. resulting from plaque in your "pipes")

Typically, engaging in paddling should not cause any healthy adult to have an embolism.

That said....You didn't really give much to go on here, but if you bruise heavily because you are also taking blood thinners, there's a good chance you are more at risk of an embolism, but it's not due to paddling, it's due to the condition you may have such as atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries...which causes blood clots and embolisms when pieces of the plaque break off into the blood and clog up an artery in the brain, heart, lungs, etc.

Bruising is blood that has "escaped" from outside the vessels, and is now trapped under the surface of the skin--so the bruise you see from paddling cannot cause an embolism--that occurs inside the vessels.  So a bruise cannot form a clot and then make its way back into the veins and back to the heart, which I think was your question.

But.... if you normally have health conditions pertaining to circulation, clots, arrhythmia, etc.  Find a kink-friendly doctor before engaging in heavy play....just as you should before starting an exercise regiment or even rigorous sexual activity.

What escapes me is why an unslightly hematoma can be such a turn on when I am admiring it on my butt while looking in the mirror the next morning. I said it escapes me. It doesn't stop me.
