I have largely refrained from criticizing OWS, but I fail to see how blocking ports is supposed to help the American middle class.  On the contrary, it seems like a really stupid, counterproductive thing to do.  What is the point?

Protesters are most upset by two West Coast companies: port operator SSA Marine and grain exporter EGT. Investment banking giant Goldman Sachs owns a major stake in SSA Marine and has been a frequent target of protesters.

They say they are standing up for workers against the port companies, which have had high-profile clashes with union workers lately. Longshoremen in Longview, for example, have had a longstanding dispute with EGT.

How was any of their action supposed to help the middle class?


If you buy into the "we have to destroy America and have a revolution" mindset it makes perfect sense.


fF you are not activley supporting OWS as a revolution (not as a social protest), It makes no sense at all.


And thats really thing. OWS never was anything/ it was everything. Which is the same as nothing.



This is just the death throes of an ugly movement, gonna cost a lot of families money they need, and cities the taxes they need though..

However all Revolutionaries understand the people will have to suffer in the short term.

Its not necessarily supposed to help the 99% in the short term.  Its supposed to hurt the 1% ers.  The long-term goals of OWS are to change our political and economic systems, regain economic equality and get rid of the idea that any company is 'too big to fail' among other things.  If it is 'too big to fail' it is obviously too big to exist in a truly free-market.

As usual kinkroids, it's all about corporate and banking greed. And in that case, I want to know why the president hasn't called out the NG ? I mean these people threaten truth, justice and American way...debt, debt and more debt.

My opinion is that the OWS bunch lacks a bit of understanding of people who get up early, and bust ass for a living. Fucking with their ability to do their jobs is NOT the way to their hearts and minds.

Thanks. The vacation was amazingly good, much needed, and well deserved. I'll throw a shout-out to the Blue Dolphin charter up the Na Pali coast, if you make it over to the islands. The captain made one hell of a mai-tai.

Iamsemisweet, I can understand your frustration at tactics like these.

When a new type of movement such as OWS arrives on the scene, it takes a while to get the tactics and strategies right. There's no science to it - it's pretty much and hit-or-miss type thing it seems to me.

For example, no one could possibly have predicted that a sole humble street vendor immolating themselves in rural Morocco (or was it Algeria?) could have sparked off the Arab Spring movement that is spreading like wildfires and toppling autocratic regimes throughout the Arab world. The current protests in Russia over the election rigging there has also caught everyone by surprise too. Putin did what has always been done in Russia - nobody expected the outcome would be any different to normal. Yet look at what has happened!

The link tells us that the initial protest at the docks attracted 10,000 people while this second protest at the docks attracted only c1,000. Is that OWS supporters voting with their feet? OWS has certainly hit a chord with the American people. It will take it a while to develop appropriate, successful tactics.

Can I suggest that you communicate your position directly to OWS? Emailing their website is one option open to you. Participating directly in the decision-making process will ensure your voice is effective. IMHO, this is a positive way to help OWS shape and select the correct tactics and strategies.
