I'm starting this topic because I've browsed around on quite a few sites over the past month or so and have seen a lot of things that have made me think a lot, and really look hard in to myself and others. One of the biggest issues I've seen and had is regarding profile photos and just how much they really affect how I view a person whilst reading their profile text.

Many times, I've gone to someone's profile because something caught my eye.. Be it something they said in a forum or comment somewhere, a photo that simply looked interesting, or because they had a photo which aroused me sexually. (There, I admit it. Although I've always admitted one of my pet peeves is when women post profile photos of their ample breasts, then comment in their profile how they're sick of being treated like a piece of meat by the guys just wanting sex. Other's want to buy what you're advertising, so if you ain't selling it, don't advertise it!)

Anyhow, sometimes, I find those profiles to be just as interesting as the photo, but most of the time I find either the photo does not do their profile justice (a very bland or poor photo), or their photo is about all they seem to have going for them (like the breast photos). I've even sent mails to some of them (the ones that I think have potential to actually offer something more) suggesting they change their main photo and such, and the reasons I felt it was best if they did. You can imagine some of the responses I've gotten, good and bad. But a couple of the more common ones are along the lines of "I don't have a better one/I don't want my face on here because of <insert some reason here)" or "Guys don't think I'm pretty, but hey, I got a great rack to attract them anyhow!" (As if they believe that the guy will one day stop looking at her rack long enough to look up in to her eyes and say "Hey, you got a great personality, too!")

So after a mail I got a bit ago, I started thinking and wondering what other people think. What's their take on things? What are some of the best profile photos you've seen that truly reflected the person, and some of the worst that either made you want to toss them in shark infested waters wearing a meat wetsuit? What about photos that did not catch your eye, but one day you happen to read their profile and think to yourself "Gosh, why didn't I check out this awesome person sooner?"

What about ideas and suggestions? What kind of ideas can you think of for cool profile photos? What would you suggest for the different general types of people and/or what they seem to want? (And ladies fed up with the horny guys, we already know you'd love to see photos of those guys impaled in a pit of spikes, or some such :-P) Maybe we can come up with some thoughts and guidelines to assist others in finding the perfect photo for them, or at least some reasons why certain types of photos are more self-destructive to their profiles than others.

I'd say you're really overthinking this. A lot of people don't post their profile online (I don't), which is fine. If someone chooses to, or wants to trade photos privately, the only thing I want is for the photo to be a fair depiction of how they look in real life. Plain and simple is fine.

Status: offline 		I've never, ever found myself to be wrong in avoiding men with *Women, *Nudity, *Obnoxiously large sex toys as their profile pictures. I may have enjoyed looking at the sex toys, but the profiles never impressed me. Pictures don't need to be good, but I do like when they make a statement. The best profile pictures I've seen are pictures of people close up, not super-uber face shot up their nose close but not full body shots. I like faces, I like expressions.

I detest male profiles which have pictures of mostly women. Even if it's a couple, using "bait" isn't cool. I like girls just fine but I'll get them naked on my own, thank you. Some of the harder pictures can give you a good impression if someone leans more towards D/s or M/s which is incredibly helpful and at times a little intimidating.

Then again, many people *aren't* here looking for partners, and in that case they don't need face shots, attractive photos, etc. If they're not gonna bitch about not finding anyone then it doesn't matter. Also, if you don't find someone attractive..then honestly those unflattering profile pics might be a good thing. If you can't handle someone looking less than their best then maybe it's better to stay away.

If you did that to me, I hope I ignored you. Unsolicited advice by strangers is not welcomed by me. If someone doesn't like my profile, likely it means they are not right for me rather than me doing anything so wrong.

I don't know that I would call any one photo more self-destructive than any other. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I know what I would find appealing, but I would hate to "assist" others in that regard unless I know them well enough to do so.

Personally, though, I don't like pictures that are not of the person in some way. A landscape or a flower or something makes my eyes glaze over. I'd rather see just a person's hand or shoulder than nothing at all of him/her.

Status: offline 		In my opinion, photos taken with the person and someone else, and then putting a large white square where the other person's face was, looks INCREDIBLY TACKY!!
If a person cannot buy a pair of scissors to delete someone else entirely before scanning their photo or go to the trouble of using photoshop to remove it, I feel it shows a lack of initiative.

Also, I think that profiles that run on and on telling how great everyone else thinks they are, do exactly the opposite. If you find you must prove your value with "backup references," then you don't have enough faith in yourself... and if you don't have that, then how will anyone else?

Personally? Both the photo and profile of the OP make me "want to toss them in shark infested waters wearing a meat wetsuit."
(Along with all the cock pics that make this site look like an advertisement for penis envy, of course.)

Of course dick shots, puss shots, ass shots and boob shots are all things I can live without.
If it's a pic you'd put on your book jacket (if you've written one) it's probably just about perfect (for me) for a profile pic.

I'm sure they're lovely, but as a profile pic, I don't have a choice but to see it. If it's with your other pics, well...I clicked on them, so if there's something "dirty" there, well, it is a kink site, and I knew what I was getting into when I clicked.

Status: offline 		At the very top of my list of unappreciated profile photos - gaping hairy assholes.  Why guys think that THIS is their best feature, baffles me.  I mean, truly boggles the gray matter.  Assholes, in general, just aren't very attractive.  I'm not sure how many women actually WANT to be looking so far up a strangers ass she can see his tonsils, but I'm guessing it is a miniscule demographic. 

Second on my list - naked men in socks.  Naked men in socks is almost never a good look.  Unless the guy has troll piggies, in which case wtf, socks are appreciated - otherwise,  just take the damn things off, ok?

Third on my list - men with exes in their photos.  Especially if they block out the faces.  That just reminds me of those wooden cutouts you see at parks and fairs.  The 'insert head here' cutouts where you stick your head in and some jackass immortalizes you with the click of the camera.  Because everyone wants an eternal reminder of themselves looking like an ape pinching its own nipple.  If you know someone with a profile picture like THAT, you should send them an unsolicited email advising them that such pictures aren't all that appealing. 

Speaking of unsolicited advice.  Not generally received well, and overall falls into the NOT awesome category.

Status: offline 		I like to see photos that show the person doing vanilla stuff they enjoy, preferably including them smiling with their FACE (not their gaping anus.) I just got a nice note from a forum regular here who said he got a well-balanced sense of who I am from my profile pics. Glad to hear it since summing myself up was the goal: hanging out at work, on a kayak, a sailboat, a motorcycle, playing my violin, hiking, dancing, and for giggles a couple lifestyle-related photos with my partner (it was fookin' hard to keep a straight face for these...)

Status: offline 		Kind of ironic topic for you, Casteele, when your main photo commits a pretty big gaffe. :p it's extremely easy to just crop the girl out; just cutting her face out is weird...
If a random dude gave me random pic advice, i'd ignore him. You insinuate that you got some snnotty messages in response, and as if those snotty messages were in the wrong for rejecting your "wonderful" advice, but honestly, I have no idea why you thought that was an appropriate thing to do.

When someone posts here, asking for advice, or when they've made the first contact with a profile photo that violates TOS, then people let them know. But randomly trawling profiles and dishing out unsolicited advice? That's silly.
You're trying to groom someone else's profile to suit your standards and unnless you have actual authority over that person, you have nno business doing that.

to me those are the very best shots. there is no quality in a human being more intimidating than the willingness to stand proudly in the midst of a messy, hideously decorated room and stare down a camera, daring the viewer to say something about one's obvious indifference to basic human standards of hygiene and order.
