Ok, I talked to him. The coat doesn't look as nice in person as it does in the picture, so he's not so attached to it. We're sending it back.

That is a fucking awesome coat!

I'm with the posters who suggest taking it to a tailor.

What about a zipper tool? A pair of pliers? A paper-clip?

I hear you about shopping.  I am a transplant to TN from Chicago, believe me lol.  My mom has it worse as she is in Fairfield Glades down here.  Both of us get frustrated with the shopping.  I mean geesh, Green Hills which is a 45 minute drive from me just got a Nordstrom.

It sounds overall its just poor manufacturing on the zipper, if he isn't attached to it, i would send it back and tell them why.

I got a new zipper put in by the tailor in town about three years ago and it cost $25. Honestly, your best bet is to complain about the coat, get a $50 gift card for your trouble, and get the zipper fixed.

First, he paid way too much for that coat.  Here it is from another dealer for $250 and he could have gotten it in black:

Men's Leather Duster

If he's wanting the distinctive styling, I've not been able to find a similar saddle coat.  However, there are many leather dusters out there that have a similar feel and run the gamut of pricing:

Black duster $140

Oilskin duster  $130

Leather Trench Coat $190

Here's some other more traditional but stylish choices:

Italian Lambskin $800

Leather Walking Coat  $300

New Zealand Car Coat  $320

Italian Designer Sheepskin  $800

And if you're really have nothing better to spend your money on, there's this leather car coat from Bergdorf Goodman for a cool $5,600.

My favorite is this New Zealand Lambskin for $350 from Sears.  It's that or the walking coat above.

Edited to add:

Oh... and here's a place you can purchase heavy duty 2 way, separating, brass zippers... should you decide to look into replacing the existing one.

Stan's Sewing Supplies

I had that problem one time with a leather jacket and I just took it to the local dry cleaners and they sewed a heavy duty zipper on it.
That was about 16-18 years ago and it still works great.

Treasure, thank you. I'm not sure the duster you found is lined the way the one we bought is. It doesn't show or mention anything about it being lined, so I've written the company to ask. (how the heck did you find that, btw?!!)

I'll look at the other ones. But we're still hoping to get the one he wants. : )

You rock!

Our best to you and Firm.

I have several leather garments.  I usually go to a good shoe shop for repairs and new zippers.

Now, if you are near Norfolk, Virginia,  "The Leather Guy" on Chesapeake Blvd does fantastic work.  He ven re-sized some leather pants for me many moons ago.

You are most welcome!  I think it is the same coat... if you compare the photos of the back side on both sites, you'll see that they are the same photo.  These are stock photos provided by the manufacturer.

A tip when shopping online... when you find something you like, google the name of it.  There is usually a link in the results that says, "Shopping results for ...".  Take that link and you'll get photos and prices for items online that are similar.  You may have to scroll through several pages, but since you're looking at photos, it's not too hard.  I've yet to not find an exact same item at the very least one other store, and I usually find it at a better price.

I agree that it is a good looking coat.  If you return the $600 version and instead pay $250, it would be worth taking somewhere to replace the zipper.

Our best to you and yours, as well!
