"INWOOD — Police are looking for three suspects who attempted to rob an Inwood family with an L-shaped piece of plastic they hoped would be mistaken for a gun.
The polyamorous family — which consists of a woman, her husband and her girlfriend — were walking at the northern end of Isham Park where it meets Park Terrace West Saturday night when they noticed a group of young men walking very closely behind. The men were wearing hoodies or hats and had black scarves over their faces."

Day may come when the fact that they were poly would not make a difference, but for now it does. And for now anyone who thwarts a robbery or other crime by force or guile is OK in my book. Make them think before trying it again I would like to see, and some victim applied correction for the would be criminals.

Actually I give extra points for killing the assailants, and even more extra point for little old Ladies, and for wheeelchairs, and for a whole lot of other things.

Whenever possible we must protect ourselves.

When the robbers have a real gun, I hope someone else does as well.

I honestly don't see them being poly making a damn bit of difference in this story at all.  They mention not only that the almost victims were poly, but also that they were white and refused to identify black suspects.

Honestly, beyond the stupidity of using a fake gun and getting caught, the other information was just trying to get a response from readers (not on the part of the OP, but on the author of the article).  The author could have just as easily said, "a man and two women walking through the park,"  as their love life is irrelevant to the event.  Same with "we were three white people about to identify blacks."  There is no logical reason why the author couldn't have simply said, "when the victims were presented with possible suspects, they were unable to conclusively identify anyone."  It is almost as though the author intentionally wanted to minimize the attempted mugging and talk about the victims personal life and create racial issues where none exist.

That's true LafayaeeteLady, but then it wouldn't be newsworthy. Otherwise it wold have been a plain story.

Now that is where you and I differ.  Although I don't know the area for the story, if muggings (or attempted ones) are not the "norm" in that area (which is horrible in and of itself), the story would have been warning people to be on the look out for such things and to possibly take some precautions when walking in the park.

Obviously, I have some issues when journalism insists on taking a sensationalist view to a story.  Seems it is done so that the journalist can beat the "competition" and get their story on the front page.

Anything to hook a reader.

Say nothing and that is 'the press treating us in a negative way' because they are trying to force us into the closet and think what we do is shameful and shouldn't be talked about.

Say something and that is 'the press treating us in a negative way' because they are trying to sensationalize and exploit what should be a private matter.

Looks like no matter what the press does, we still get to wear the "Im a victim" badge.

Anyone wanna get a betting pool going on how long it will be before someone posts that that the mugging is a 'hate crime' and that if the couple were mono-relationship they wouldn't have been targeted. That the muggers only picked them because they are bigioted and closed minded toward polyamorous people.
