Oh, but wait.

Has Al Gore been to Russia recently?

[image]http://l1.yimg.com/cv/ip/ap/default/111214/arctic_methane_uni.jpg[/image] Underwater discovery troubles scientists

Russian scientists have discovered hundreds of plumes of methane gas, some 1,000 meters in diameter, bubbling to the surface of the Arctic Ocean. Scientists are concerned that as the Arctic Shelf recedes, the unprecedented levels of gas released could greatly accelerate global climate change.

Igor Semiletov of the Russian Academy of Sciences tells the UK's Independent that the plumes of methane, a gas 20 times as harmful as carbon dioxide, have shocked scientists who have been studying the region for decades. "Earlier we found torch-like structures like this but they were only tens of meters in diameter," he said. "This is the first time that we've found continuous, powerful and impressive seeping structures, more than 1,000 metres in diameter. It's amazing." Semiletov said that while his research team has discovered more than 100 plumes, they estimate there to be "thousands" over the wider area, extending from the Russian mainland to the East Siberian Arctic Shelf.

"In a very small area, less than 10,000 square miles, we have counted more than 100 fountains, or torch-like structures, bubbling through the water column and injected directly into the atmosphere from the seabed," Semiletov said. "We carried out checks at about 115 stationary points and discovered methane fields of a fantastic scale — I think on a scale not seen before. Some plumes were a kilometer or more wide and the emissions went directly into the atmosphere — the concentration was a hundred times higher than normal."

This does not sound like very good news.

Not to worry, soon we will have our climate change deniers telling us this is not really happening.

thishereboi -> RE: Another Al Gore Climate Change Scam (12/15/2011 3:54:41 AM)

Al wouldn't be interested in this one. There is no one to blame and therefore no way to make a few bucks off of it.

Moonhead -> RE: Another Al Gore Climate Change Scam (12/15/2011 4:51:16 AM)

There's nobody to blame for the arctic ice cap retreating and uncovering these, then? Gore's film was arguing that we were all culpable for that (which is why you folks have such a mad on for him, innit?)

Hillwilliam -> RE: Another Al Gore Climate Change Scam (12/15/2011 5:10:39 AM)

Likewise, I'm waiting for someone to claim it isn't happening.

It's probably methane hydrates degassing due to slightly warmer water temps. Not a good thing.

Where's the polar bear floating on a thin peice of ice ? He's always in the global warming photos.

Wow. Those are some knock-down impressive numbers. I can't help but think that reducing CO2 emissions by any actually feasible amount isn't going to accomplish much to offset releases on this order of magnitude of a greenhouse gas that is 20 times more potent. This looks to me like another brief in the case for a shift in focus to planning how best to deal with warming's effects rather than bankrupt the planet in a largely futile attempt to stop it.

Yeah why bother trying to mitigate climate change?

The "fog" is getting so bad in China that the airport gets shut down regularly.

The statement posted online along with a photograph of central Beijing muffled in a miasma of brown haze did not mince words: “The end of the world is imminent.” The ceaseless churning of factories and automobile engines in and around Beijing has led to this: hundreds of flights canceled since Sunday because of smog, stores sold out of face masks, and many Chinese complaining on the Internet that officials are failing to level with them about air quality or make any improvements to the environment.

Chronic pollution in Beijing, temporarily scrubbed clean for the 2008 Summer Olympics, has made people angry for a long time, but the disruptions it causes to daily life are now raising questions about the economic cost, and the government’s ability to ensure the safety of the population.

“As a Chinese citizen, we have been kept in the dark on this issue for too long,” said Yu Ping, the father of a 7-year-old boy, who has started a public campaign to demand that officials report more accurately about Beijing’s air quality. “The government is just so bureaucratic that they don’t seem to care whether we common people live or die. And it’s up to us, the common people, to prod them and to put pressure on them so that they can reflect on their actions and realize that they really just have to do something.”

When the frustration of parents boils over, Communist Party leaders start worrying about their legitimacy in the eyes of the people. That was the case in 2008 when parents vented anger over deadly school collapses in the Sichuan earthquake and over adulterated milk.

But it`s 52 degrees here in the middle of December, so the global warming thing is really working out great......

T-shirts again today...yeah!

When did you become all knowing?

Lucylastic -> RE: Another Al Gore Climate Change Scam (12/15/2011 6:03:49 PM)

his whole life

servantforuse -> RE: Another Al Gore Climate Change Scam (12/15/2011 6:15:49 PM)

Climate change has been a part of this earth since the beginning of time. It gets colder and then it gets warmer. Nothing to see here except people trying to make money from a non existant problem.

Lucylastic -> RE: Another Al Gore Climate Change Scam (12/15/2011 6:20:30 PM)

as I thought! you are too ignorant to be posting on this topic

Using that standard the poor man would never be able to post [:D]

It has changed but the speed of change is pretty much unprecedented.

10 years ago these experts were saying that we would freeze to death. Now the heat will do us all in. I'm not buying any of it and I'm not worried about it.
