Iamsemisweet -> World's biggest Star Wars fan (12/15/2011 7:47:31 AM)

http://www.columbian.com/news/2011/dec/15/man-accused-light-saber-assault-janzten-beach/

Just to summarize, a man was arrested in PDX yesterday for assaulting fellow shoppers with, of all things, a light saber. Police were called, but apparently tasers are ineffective against geeks armed with light sabers. Take note.

I've always been more of a Star Trek fan but, I have seen all the SW movies (in their original runs, God help me! I remember when Jabba The Hut was a human).

I have a graphic, though, that I think is apropos, here ...

No joke- I used to carry around a dual lightsaber toy for self defense.

It was the kind where the plastic collapsed when you put it away, or you could press a button and flick your wrist to extend the blades.  Very cheap- no lights or noises... but also very sturdy.  I mean, you could probably knock somebody unconscious with it, and it wouldn't even have a dent.  Friends thought it was very silly and weird that I carried it, but it was something I liked to carry because while it might get some teasing, it was never a problem anywhere that I'd go through a metal detector.  It also is one of those things that if you bring it out in the middle of defending yourself, people will kind of go, "WTF?"  That hesitation gives you the advantage.

Reading this article, I feel justified.

You could fair puncture a lung or nutsack with those stillettos, why weigh yourself down like that then?

You're assuming I wore those shoes in neighborhoods where I might feel I needed protection?  I'm so not the blond girl in a horror flick!

The lightsabre has a longer reach than even the wicked highest pair of nosebleed heels as well...

At the risk of getting into a geek-fight, I'm pretty sure Jabba was never portrayed as human in anything that was actually released to theaters. He didn't appear in the original releases of Star Wars or Empire, and was definitely a slug from Return onward. Lucas filmed some scenes for Star Wars with a guy standing in for Jabba, but they were never finished (he'd intended to use special effects to insert Jabba but ran out of time/budget). I think that scene is available as an extra on one of the many DVD releases, but it came out well after Return.

Um, not that I'm pedantic about Star Wars or anything.

I stand corrected (after some research) but, I MUST have seen that scene, early on, somewhere.

Anyway, I was there, at the very beginning ...

Peace and comfort,

Michael
