Jaquin -> Diffusing Pain (12/15/2011 3:30:26 PM)

- If this is in the wrong forum or some such, sorry, still new here etc .. feel free to move it of course -

Now this may get a bit psychological but the thought occurred to me today as I was in the shower with nipple clamps (and various other bits of bondage, for some reason I really enjoy the mix of bondage and hot water).  So the thought is this: if you were given the choice of one clamp on one nipple or one on both nipples which would you take?

Is one clamp on one nipple less painful then one on each?  This question of course then leads to the title of the thread, does having two somehow diffuse the pain?  If we have two spots of equal pain to focus on does it leave our mind stuck between the two, not focusing fully on one or the other; as opposed to just a single clamp being the sole focus - does it really hurt more because it's singular or is our perception just able to focus more on a single one and it feels worse even though the actual pain is the same as it would be on both nipples if you had the two clamps?

(Oh for those probably curious what else I am bound with in the shower I do have pictures though I don't know this forums policy on showing/uploading so I -might- post once I find that stuff out [;)])

You might want to look up the 'pain gate theory'.

I don't focus on the pain, I just let it take me.

I have a hard time tolerating nipple clamps for any length of time and find that a less painful sensation elsewhere, such as clothes pins, or a pleasurable one, such as my vibrator, does diffuse the pain and make the clamps more tolerable for longer amounts of time.

the hot water increases the blood flow in the skin and thus makes it more sensitive. the same happens with me during flogging. as far as the pain it does build up the endorphins to where you can get that floaty sub space feeling. for me it takes a bit to get me focused as i am add. it is a wonderfull felling to get there. if you look up the davis husband suceptiability to hypnosis you can follow the scale with the scene. i have been able to get to space once and very close many times but it is always a wonderfull ride i hope this helps

The OP brings up an interesting question about pain and diffusing it.

Having gone through getting a lot of shots in the knee, and knee surgery, one of the techniques the PA (physican's assistant) uses in giving cortisone shots into the knee is to pinch the skin tightly just prior to pressing the needle in. She told me she does this as the body cannot feel 2 different pains in the same area. And I have to admit that it works. Because the doctor does not do this technique and when he gives the shot it hurts like hell.

So now I am wondering in BDSM how much pain is diffused becasue you are feeling pain somewhere else? Hmmm....lots to ponder the next time I play :)

Those shots rock MM, the Doc used to pinch me somewhere else at the same time to distract.
