At Kmart stores, Santa gets help: Anonymous donors are paying off strangers' layaway accounts
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) -- The young father stood in line at the Kmart layaway counter, wearing dirty clothes and worn-out boots. With him were three small children.
He asked to pay something on his bill because he knew he wouldn't be able to afford it all before Christmas. Then a mysterious woman stepped up to the counter.
"She told him, 'No, I'm paying for it,'" recalled Edna Deppe, assistant manager at the store in Indianapolis. "He just stood there and looked at her and then looked at me and asked if it was a joke. I told him it wasn't, and that she was going to pay for him. And he just busted out in tears."

Sometimes, you read something that just makes your day , just hugely brighter and smilier

Isnt it extremely sad that in one of the richest nations people cant afford even little gifts? I have to admit, Lucy, while I am glad she did this, I am literally in tears for all those who work their asses off and still have to look their children in the eye on Christmas and explain why Santa forgot them.

Sometimes it seem that when the economy is at the worst, the middle class comes thru again.

The area where I live is traditionally poor at best. When the Salvation Army Angel Trees went up this year, they were GONE before I could even get one and Ive gotten one 15 straight years.

Never before have they all been gone so quickly. When it's rough, those of us not in the 1% pull together.

Been there Tazzy and i dont ever wanna go there again, thankfully the kids are grown now but the shortage of money , I remember only too well.
Paying it forward is one hell of a way to remind yourself of how horrendous it all was, and is for others even now.

Sorry

We don't do gifts anymore. We have everything we need. This is materialistic and the REAL shame of it is that these people who cannot afford these gifts to which they have commited could have used that money to better ends.

Argue all you want but I am right. You people need the economy to get ALOT worse to learn a fucking thing. It seems like you're so stupid you would run out and buy a house when you know you are getting layed off and your job shipped to China today.

It certainly seems so doesn't it ?

By the way - welcome.

Fa la la la la, la la la la.

Give we now our future peril,
For a glimpse of gay apparel,
And to play a rhyme,
Pay up our last dime,
To Lynch B. Merril.

Go on your spending spree. Spend the rent and see what your landlord thinks of it in February. That's why I don't rent anymore, for now. Buy everybody a new plasma TV made in China, a new car, give till it HURTS. And I don't mean pain, I mean until it injures you. Buy people houses and Learjets, boats and nuclear weapons. Trade what little eentsy bit you have left for foreign aid, in the form of consumerism.

Not my problem, not any more.

T^T

That is awesome. I just love stories like this one. In fact the other day I was in the gas station buying something and I was chatting with the lady ahead of me. When she left the register she turned, handed me a lottery ticket and said "have a great day". I won 4 bucks and while it wasn't a lot of money it still makes me smile when I think about it. Random acts of kindness are priceless.

This is a wonderful story Lucy - thanks for sharing.

As boi said: "Random acts of kindness are priceless." Yes. Absolutely!

In the SE Asian Buddhist countries there's a custom: Someone from a poor family will catch a bird in the jungle, take it to town and hawk it on the streets. Someone (else) who's had a good day, or is just feeling kind, will purchase the bird and then release it back to the open skies. The poor bird gives up a few hours of its life to become part of a wealth redistribution scheme where everyone comes out ahead, all involved benefit spiritually and/or financially.

I suspect there's a moral in the that exquisite custom for the West.

Happy Xmas! [:D]

They hit here in Hendersonville, TN KMart today too, how exciting.

They were doing it over the phone anonymously.

Missokyst -> RE: Anonymous donors pay off layaway accounts (12/18/2011 5:52:34 PM)

Here in my city a local jewelry store wrapped up several boxes with a string of pearls and left them in various parts of the city. Many people saw the boxes but left them where they were, thinking they might be bombs. Some opened them and gave them to other people. It was a nice gesture but kind of sad that we live now live in a world where even small packages are to be feared.
