"Newt Gingrich tumbles, but Mitt Romney fails to gain" Newt Gingrich has gone from slipping to sliding. After weeks of attack ads and stump speeches from his opponents, the former House speaker’s lead is eroding — especially in Iowa, where he had been running far ahead of the pack through last week. But even though Gingrich is falling, the polls don’t show good news for Mitt Romney. The former Massachusetts governor’s numbers have barely moved even as Gingrich has bled support — the latest instance of Romney failing to benefit from another candidate’s tumble. “Gingrich’s voters have scattered across the field,” Lydia Saad, a senior editor at Gallup said. “It makes the biggest statement about Romney not being able to benefit when another candidate collapses.” In Iowa, the Democratic firm Public Policy Polling released numbers Monday finding Ron Paul taking the lead in the state with 23 percent, followed by Mitt Romney at 20 percent. Gingrich, who had been in first at 22 percent for the Iowa PPP survey a week ago, went down to third, at 14 percent. In New Hampshire, PPP’s Monday poll put Romney at 35 percent, followed by Paul at 19 percent and then Gingrich with 13 percent. “When Newt comes under scrutiny the way he is in Iowa and New Hampshire, he folds pretty fast,” PPP pollster Tom Jensen said. “Even if he continues to have the lead in South Carolina and Florida, there is a very high likelihood that he’ll fall apart in those places. The bubble has definitely burst, I don’t know if I would quite declare him dead yet.” The mixed results show up in national polls as well. A Gallup poll of rolling averages found Gingrich lost the 14 percentage point lead he held earlier this month, allowing Romney to move into a statistical tie, with Gingrich at 26 percent and Romney at 24. A CNN poll also released Monday found Gingrich and Romney tied nationally at 28 percent, with Gingrich losing the 4 point lead he’d held a month ago. http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1211/70658.html#ixzz1h75EjtSp
