I once took an Intro linguistics class. First class, prof went around asking us to read the sentence he had written on the board. He was able to tell your linguistic background to a high degree of accuracy. When he got to me, he said, "Ah, a pure vowel speaker from the north side of Chicago." Seems folks from north side of Chicago speak with exactly ten vowels, long and short of each of a, e, i, o, and u. Whenever he needed to make a point, I was usually the student he used as an example. I remember his speaking of the "Mary, merry, marry" line which basically divides US into "da nord" and "dem der Sutherners." Of course, my ears hear three different words. HOW-SOME-SO-EVER, I also would like a translation. Never did figure out that rhyming thingie. ETA: WELCOME, Ladies..... or is it "Laddies"?
