I'm thinking about getting a Tablet/Ereader.  Does anyone here have one?  If so, do you recommend them?  Any quick advice about what to get and what to avoid?  I want to be able to browse online, download books, etc.

Any advice would be appreciated.

I had a Kindle 3G which I loved and just got the KindleFire OMG it's amazing. Check it out on Amazon, too much for me to tell you about but I LOVE it!

As much as I hate to type it, with all of the research I've done, I believe the Ipad2 to be the best overall tablet on the market. Amazon is having huge problems with their new toy. Nook is okay but vastly limited. There are others out there but for the money, the Ipad seems to be the clear winner at the moment.

And, I've heard rumours that an Ipad3 will be coming out this next year. With the stellar performance of the Ipad2, if I had the cash right now, I would be looking for deals on the 2 in a few months.

I have a Kindle Fire, loving it.  Of course the iPad is the way to go, but I could not justify spending that much money on something I knew I'd use mainly for books/magazines.

I have a Kindle Fire…It has a fast chip and it is a pleasure to read or watch movies on. It’s cost is $199 but that is slightly deceiving. You get one month free prime media but after that it will cost you $79 to $89 more a year if you want it. Prime gives you many free movies and books as well as low cost streaming of the latest hits in movies.

It has a 7 inch screen but the same pixel resolution as the ipad 2 so it is very sharp. Do not expect the Kindle to compete with the Ipad…it is much slower but it is fast enough that you will not be pulling your hair waiting.

To me the one big disadvantage of the Kindle is the need for a WiFi connection in order to set up and download movies. You cannot at this time use the USB port to download directly to the Kindle directories.

Another disadvantage is storage…the kindle has 8G with no card storage. This is offset with free online storage on Amazon’s cloud…but I like saving on the machine or my computer. Now you can download books in Kindle format and mp3’s through the USB port just not movies.

I like the sturdy feel but hate the location of the on off button… It is far too easy to accidentally turn it off while reading or watching. It is also very sensitive along the pictures edges and while watching a movie you can drop out to the main menu by accidentally brushing the screen. You are better off buy a kindle holder when watching.

The sound is OK but not strong so you will want to use earphones or but add-on speakers when watching movies or listening to music.

Finally it does not have a camera if you are looking for one.

Over all I like the machine but it is not without drawbacks.

Butch

I got a kindle fire for reading in the bath (got a water resistant case too). I like it a lot, and I already had amazon prime so a free book a month is nice too. I could barely justify the 200 for it; I can't see spending the extra for something beefier when it amounts to just a toy.

I just bought an iPad2 with AT&T 3G, i havent used it yet so cant really say its pros and cons..

I bought it cuz for me its a toe in the water, into possibly switching from microsoft to apple (for my next computer).. I am feed up with microsoft...

I thought about cheaper tablets & netbooks but i am sooooooo tired of toys that dont do enough and sit gathering dust instead.. the ipad for me is a light version of a laptop, or netbook.. something i can use for business cuz i hate dragging my laptop with me.. I think i will get one of those small keyboards for it tho.. there is the free icloud too so i should be able to sync with my laptop using it and store i think up to 5GB on it.. I really wanted something that was much more than a book reader, it want to be able to access the internet anywhere... or as much as possible..

Thanks, to everyone who responded with advice and links.  I can't really afford an Ipad, but I have had my eye on the Kindle Fire. I'm very glad to hear people say they are enjoying it.  I've read the reviews on different sites, but I always wonder if those reviews are actual customers or people paid to seed the site with good reviews.  I'm pretty sure no one here is being paid to sell the Kindle Fire (glares at them)  you aren't are you?

I just got the regular kindle, not the fire. I love it. My only problem is that I find the font too small to shop the kindle store so I tend to do that on the computer. But my daughter has the same one and she has no problems so this is probably due to my vision difficulties.

However it's very important you set a budget and stick to it. I could spend a fortune on this.

I know a tad about paid reviews - send me links to the sites and I will opine as to their veracity.

I love my big Kindle Dx - don't browse the web with that - prefer my double monitor, desk, chair, keyboard for that. My family all chipped in for that for Christmas last year.

~Fast Reply~

Great post Winsome, I've been contemplating the same purchase.

The links for the Kindle vs. Nook were, in my opinion, inconclusive except for CNets which doesn't say which is better, but rather lists the pros and cons of both and encourages the buyer to select based on needs.

I also noticed there wasn't a lot of talk about battery life which is very important for what I want it for.  At the end of all this, I'm still not sure which I would buy, although I know I wouldn't buy the IPad.  It costs more than I paid for my current laptop which suits my needs just fine.

Note - leaving the free 3G wireless on kills the battery in days rather than the 3 weeks listed for my big Dx. I just turn it on to acquire books from Amazon and then turn it back off. I have to use the USB for library books, so barely have the wireless on, and while it's plugged in to the computer to get the books, I leave it there for a charge, so battery hasn't been an issue for me since I learned about not leaving the wireless on. I just realized I haven't seen my wall charger since I moved in August.

My cell phone reception was terrible at my mother's, but the Kindle wireless managed to connect.

I stare at a computer screen all day and wanted the eInk rather than LCD.

Lol, I had eBook frenzy when I first got my Kindle! Thank goodness for eBooks at the library and the three library systems to which I have access!

Nooooooook.

I've had mine for a while now and I love it. If you really want an eReader, this is the one.

I've gotten the itouch for my teenager.  I don't even have a smartphone yet and I don't want to pay for a data plan (which may run overtime).  I've done some research and its less than the iPad, it uses wifi, apps can be downloaded.  I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with these?

Have had a Touch for two years now and still use it daily, fantastic little device.

As for tablets, avoid the Acer Iconia if you plan on browsing the Web, Acer's have a problem staying connected to Wifi signals.
