It's quite akin to some of Thom Wolfe's earlier stuff (The Electric Candy Coloured Streamline Baby and that), except that you couldn't really imagine that twerp hanging out with bikers for a couple of months to get a story...

That would definitely add a bit to reading GWSH.

Ok, I'm almost done with my volume of Byron. I think Hunter S. Thompson will be next - a nice counterpoint...

In an entirely different genre, anyone ready recent work by Tim Powers? I read a couple of his wacky novels back in the 80s and wondered if the newer stuff is worth while.

It's a long time since I've read any Powers as well, to be honest. I think the last one I read was about people who ate ghosts. That was rather good. Mid '90s, I think.

I'm going skiing in a place with no snow. Any suggestions for a good read?

I'm going to suggest Farmers Almanac, or any book that deals in a more thorough understanding of weather conditions.

No idea what sort of books the OP enjoys, but I'd say some Kim Newman, Angela Carter, Fritz Leiber, Alfred Bester, Mark Twain, P G Wodehouse, or some decent auto/biographies. If you like Bruce Campbell, his autobiography is just hilarious and brilliant as well.

Don't judge a book by its cover, it could well be worth a good sniff or two...

I forgot to say anything by PJ O'Rourke is worth the price tag, funny irreverent & hits the target every time.
