Status: offline 		I am sooo tired of piece of shit vacuum cleaners that stop working a few months after buying them. It looks like I'll have to buy another one in January. Are their any vacuums out there that work for more than a few months that aren't extremely expensive?

Status: offline 		I would try looking at craigs list...esp after Christmas.

Also, many companies offer a one year warranty on their products so make sure you fill out and send in the card if you buy new.

Many vacuum fixes such as changing the belt are easy and relatively inexpensive.

There are other similar things one can do like making certain if you have carpets the fibers aren't getting caught in the agitator (the part that goes around), changing the bag before it gets overfull (there are lines of the bags to let you know and they are no where near to the top).

Status: offline 		I like Hoover. The price is right and I've had my little one for over 2 years now (and I'm a vacuum junkie so I use it heavily) and it's still going strong. You have to maintain them - clean the filters, roller belts, bags/canisters, etc. If you have pets definitely get something designed for pet hair, and make sure you don't ever use it on hard surfaces without switching it to that setting.

Status: offline 		It's bagless and our roommate checked for clogs. I'm looking for an upright that's bagless and beltless with no rotating brushes. Basically an upright that works like a canister. Does anyone know of a good one that lasts?

Status: offline 		I love my Dyson.  I know, they are kind of expensive, but sometimes you can find a floor model on sale.  Plus, if you are replacing your vacuum every year or two, a Dyson, that should last a long time, will be better in the long run. 

I have 4 dogs and live in the country.  I am constantly tracking in stuff, and my vacuum has to work hard, so I know what I am talking about!

Status: offline 		I understand, but I've managed to find a little 1200w diamond that does just fine for my apartment. It's cheap probably because the indicator tells you the bag is full when it isn't. I get round that by emptying the bag after every second use and changing the bag after three such cycles.

However if I had larger property I would probably look at Dyson and in particular the Dyson Animal.

When my last vacuum crapped out I asked my friend if I could bribe her to borrow her dyson for a week.  I had heard so much about them but was hesitant to spend the money.  I didn't dislike her dyson, but I didn't totally get the hype either.

I ended up buying a refurbished eureka "pet lover plus" from big lots for $65.  I happened to be trying to still decide and looked at the vacuums while I was there and bought it on a whim.  I had vacummed pretty well the day before I bought it and it still brought up some things the dyson had not.  (I have major dust and mold allergies so my vacuum gets put to a lot of use.)  I have had it a year and a half now and the only thing I've had to do to my pre-owned vacuum was change the filters.  A rather unexpected plus has been that my local big box stores carry the dust, hepa and the belt for it - so god forbid one of them ever crap out its an easy fix.

I have friends who own dysons and they love them... I just have issues spending that much on something that just vacuums.  For that kind of price I'd rather save up a little more and buy a rainbow vac.  (Me and my allergies miss that thing.)

If you are looking for something brushless, I assume you don't have carpet?  Are you just looking for something to pick up dust and bits and pieces and such?

Status: offline 		I absolutely LOVE my Shark Power Pet upright. It's bagless and it sucks up my cat's hair he sheds with NO problem at all. I just LOVE it!!

Status: offline 		My rule is DO NOT LET NEIGHBORS BORROW THE VACUUM CLEANER!!!

Bo did that one day and they ruined a brand new one that I brought for him.  They did not pick up after themselves (crayons, coins and other shit).

I brought him another one, canister with a HEPA filter.  It works great after 2 years, 2 dogs and a cat.  He had to endure a tongue lashing from me (a bottom telling a top off...PRICELESS!!!!)

Status: offline 		For the most part, although I can't comment on Dyson which is generally top eof the line, my experience is bagless vacuums is that they are crap.  I had a couple of them, they work great for a short time, then they don't anymore, and replacing the filters (if you can find them) are more expensive than replacing bags.  I bought a Sears Kenmore bagged vacuum - costs a little more than most bagless vacs you fine, but it works great and was rated a best buy by consumer reports I think.  So, you have to buy bags - big deal, better than that cloud of dust that escapes when you open the bagless cylinder.  The cylinders don't look so cool when its dirt in there instead of the colorful confetti they show on the commercials when people dancing around.

It has a brush and a belt to drive it, but that is not a problem. What is, is the flexhose that passes the dirt from the brush to the top of the tank. If that clogs, the cleaner "craps out". Easy fix with a bent coat hanger. Just pretend you are going after King Tuts' BRAIN! Only problem I have seen with this make/model.

Bottom line .....$50 or less

Do you have carpeting that you are vacuuming or are you using it on bare floors?  If you are using it on carpeting, you NEED the rotating brushes if you intend to actually get stuff out of the carpet.  If you are using it on bare floors, then rotating brushes are something you not only don't need, but shouldn't have.

Meanwhile, if you are expecting your vacuum to pick up chunks of stuff, that isn't what a vacuum is meant to do.  In other words, if someone dumps a bowl of M&Ms on your rug, you shouldn't be using your vacuum as the primary means of cleaning them up.  You are supposed to pick up the visible chunks of stuff first.

BTW, canister vacuums have rotating brushes on the carpet attachment.

Status: offline 		I always check for visible metal chunks (coins, nails, etc.) before vacuuming. Why would M&M's cause a problem? They're not hard like a coin.

Status: offline 		i've had my dyson since about 1998. barrel, can't stand uprights. i've lost the brush head, but most carpets are short, and the standard head works just fine.

+1 for the Dirt Devil. 3 kittehs: major workout. Weekly vacuuming for 5 years now...no problems. Use it on hardwood and vinyl floors, and persian rugs. I like that it doesn't use bags...less material to throw in the landfills. I'm still on the original filter. Just tap it out really well each time you empty the container, and rinse it with a garden hose once in a while.
