No matter what you're celebrating this time of year, it's time to raise a glass to friends and family.

What's your favorite holiday (or other time) toast?

To you folks, I say:

Have a merry Christmas and a happy New Year
With a pocket full of money and a belly full of beer.

un e Bretzel en dä Häng

This is a toast for New Years eve in Kölsch, a German dialect. It means:

Happy New Year,
head full of hair,
mouth full of teeth,
and a pretzel in the hands.

The pretzel referenced is not the Bavarian style one known in the US, but one made from sweet yeast dough, usually huge, traditionally made to share on New Years day.

I am going to dig one out tomorrow and send it to you. Great to have that stuff ready in the aftermath of New Years Eve.
It is easy to make, too.

And the other:

Ariba! (holding your glass up)

y por Dentro! (drinking what's in your glass)

well, given the soft pretzel I ate yesterday...I've got 2 out of 3.  No too bad!

For a seasonal toast, it is this one that I prefer.

May we all be alive this time next year.

And for an general toast I am fond of these.

May your home always be too small to hold all your friends.

May you live to be 100 years, with one extra year to repent.

May you always have the price of a pint in your pocket.
 
And of course my all time most preferred all purpose toast, and one I now raise my glass and wish upon all of you who are not from Cork...

May you die in bed at 95, shot by a jealous spouse.

A happy Christmas to one and all.

A Russian once translated Bottoms up into Russian & back to English & it came out as Arseholes to the sky.
