Status: offline 		it's human vanity that thinks we are the only ones in the whole of the universe, and that if not whatever life there is couldn't possibly be more advanced than us.

some of the things the collective 'we' sees is just us testing out secret stuff as we always have done. some of it is natural occurance, some of it is hoax, but to me it stands to reason that some of it could well be truely alien.

i'm sceptical by what i see, but i am a believer of life elsewhere. all i know for sure is that a friend and i saw something years ago that stopped us mid conversation and stride. both of us were looking at the sky at a huge light that had just appeared there. it was a clear day so not a reflection on the clouds and it disappeared in a blink of an eye moving at incredible speed. we looked at each other in amazement to make sure the other had seen the same thing.

there are things on this planet from thousands of years ago that i find a little hard to compute for the intellect at the time. there is nothing to say that aliens haven't already been here and gone.

all i know is; when they finally build the lighthuggers i want to be on one cumming as i watch the earth get smaller. sadly i doubt it will happen in my lifetime unless we stop pouring money into stupid bloody wars amongst ourselves.

Status: offline 		to Azonier, no, humans are extremely vain to assume that no other living thing could exist in the universe, or that if it does it can't possibly be intelligent enough to get here when we haven't got past our own bloody moon yet. IF we have even done that. there is the belief in some that if 'we' can't do it, nothing else can because 'we' are the most intelligent life form there is. vanity is extremely narrow minded.

Moonhead, i said exactly what i meant. i do think that one day we will have space craft that travel at or damn near the speed of light. we may come up with it ourselves or it maybe stolen technology. be pedantic and say when when you are typing what you think about stuff so you can cover all bases, i'll say what i like when i'm typing. afteral, i think i know better what i think than you do. cheers

There is no way in Hell any government on this Earth is going to piss away the money developing a spacecraft that can get up to a significant fraction of the speed of light in your lifetime, and whatever Robert Anson Heinlein and his brood of imitators since spend their careers arguing, private enterprise couldn't afford that if they wanted to. It's government or nothing, and not even China has that sort of money.

Interstellar ships might be theoretically possible, but they're impossible in practical terms, and are likely to remain so for a long time yet. Clear enough what I'm getting at here?

Status: offline 		i did say i seriously doubt that it will happen in my lifetime. however, dispite what you say from the practical side of things, the imaginative side of me likes to think that when it happens, for i do believe it will happen eventually, that i would be on it. there is a difference.

so i will continue to say when, thanks all the same, dispite it probably not being in my lifetime. one lives in hope that thinks may change. if aliens do come here anytime soon you can bet your arse there'll be money from somewhere to replicate whatever technology got them here.

(As for reverse engineering alien technology, I wouldn't put too much hope in that one: the cargo cultists never managed to build their own transport planes after the war ended, did they? I'd suspect that one would work out a lot more like Roadside Picnic than The High Crusade. I'm buggered if I can think of single example of contact with a superior civilisation in recorded history that wasn't one of the worst things that ever happened to the contactees...)

Status: offline 		seriously, my coment was said very much tongue in cheek. i really don't care about how or when it's done. my reference to 'lighthugger' comes from alastair reynolds' books. he also has a subsection of humans called conjoiners, i could go for their technology too. blar blar. his books have very real science in there, as does iain m banks. when it all happens, i want to be there lol

Status: offline 		I thought I'd read the term somewhere. Reynolds does have a day job at the ESA, so he knows a bit more about that stuff than most hard sf writers, but he's still fiddled some of the science a bit. (Though not half as much as Larry Niven and his peers and imitators tend to.)
That said, I do love the fact that there's a fullblown space opera series with no FTL travel in it...

Naturally, people being what they are, most ufos are actually misidentifyed rather than unidentified in the pure sense. And some are downright fradulent. For example, I am certian that you can identify this object, photographed in Nashville in 1989.

What the fuck are they doing? To get here from wherever they were they must be so far in advance of where we are that their tech would probably be unrecognisable to us. So if they wanted to come along and say hi, why haven't they done it? If they wanted to observe us I am sure they could do it without us having the slightest clue they are there.
But they haven't chosen either of those routes, they have chosen to fuck about now and again in our atmosphere, where they are half seen or glimpsed through some cloud in a way that no one can agree if they are there or not, and they have been doing it for 100's of years. Why? Why would that be their choice? To see how we might react? Well they have had loads of time to work that out haven't they?

If you want paranoid bullshit, let's think about how many children disappeared last year. Just... gone. What makes you think we are not simply convenient food for (some of) them? Moreover, what makes you think they are not native to Earth? As in Been Here everyday since we showed up? Could it not be that these are the same guys we been calling Demons and Angels? The good guys and the bad guys as suits the moment. Just like the farmer is to his cows, all the while caring for us in exactly the same way.

Think about it. 30,000 years ago we were cave painters. 10,000 years ago we were building pyramids. And we built a lot of them, all over the world. And today, we don't know how. Or when. Or where. Or why. That is a little tough to explain, isn't it? Does it really sound like something we would have thought of ourselves? One day, Thag said, "Hey, I know! We'll just stack rocks for the rest of all of our lives!". And everyone said "Cool!". No one asked why.

You are very welcome dear boy but I never said they were liars - some (perhaps like yourself) seem delusional enough to really believe that conspiracy is behind all the problems and tragedies that befall Man's unfortunate existence. I particularly liked his contention that John F. Kennedy was assassinated because he wanted to tell on UFOs. Wow...
