The guy made this up then ?

Actually I think people should be able to sell organs. I'm serious, the people who install them make all kinds of money, how about a couple ten grand for the family ? Place bids on kidneys, about fifty grand a pound for bone marrow. I'm really not kidding here. Those things you can sell while alive, and the bone marrow deal hurts like hell I hear.

But then the best tissue matches are from family, so I guess it's all what kind of family you are in. You fly in a set of lungs from a prison in China, you are going to be on immunosuppresive drugs forever. Which actually accomplishes the mention of the fact that organs are already sold. It's not legal of course, I think, but almost anywhere in the world money is more important than law.

Take an average transplant. Say fifty grand to take it out and a hundred grand to put it in. Then ongoing care for life, which should make insurance actuaries piss their pants. All this money gets made and the person who makes it possible doesn't get shit. This may seem crass and of course politically incorrect, but I think it's not fucking fair to the donor or their family. They should get a cut.

Notice I did edit though, touche' for catching me pre edit. You get two points.

T^T

But you see there is a profit out there but only for the greedy capitalist scum...out there. They buy laws that prohibit the sale of organs so they can charge say $100,000 for the surgery itself.

Termy, you have a mental lapse ? You do know that 'they' are always to make a HUGE profit off 'society's' health care ? [sic]

(Schmid's mother said no one "specifically" asked if her son would be a donor, but they "subtly talk to you about quality of life." )

Irresponsible journalism at its finest and, unfortunately, the American public seems to have eaten it up hook line and sinker.

Unmitigated bullshit. You do not and medicos do not discuss even 'quality-of-life' with a patient with no stipulation on record and not unless they thought they had a possible vegetative 'state-of-living' result on their minds. That means discussion about a person that is really brain dead.

How is this irresponsible journalism when you rely upon the same reporting to try and make the point ? In fact, it is as likely that he had no insurance and they didn't think medicaid or mom & dad could handle another 100 grand...so...let us recoup some $$ on his vitals hey mom & dad...waddya think ?

Bullshit.

My doctor and nurses discuss my quality of life with me all the time. What those doctors etc. were telling that family was that a brain injury can result in a range of conditions and they needed to prepare themselves for what would be, at best, an extremely long and unpleasant road ahead.

There could be no discussion of organ donation until a diagnosis of brain death was made which was what the MRI was for that revealed he was recovering.

Didn't I read that he was in an induced coma ? Or did I get that mixed up with another thing here...........

And MrR, I didn't have a mental lapse, I was bitching about it.

T^T

Exactly. Its charted when a formal decision is reached and the discussion with the family is done about that decision. Until that time, staff will continue to keep the families hopes realistic.

I wish it were that simple. Those laws are in place to protect people. If it were legal, what would prevent someone from selling your liver, then killing you to obtain it.

Not to mention organs are not just interchangeable. Its more than just an organ and a blood type match.

It's too confusing.

The mother says:

Schmid's mother said no one "specifically" asked if her son would be a donor, but they "subtly talk to you about quality of life."

The brother says:

"It seems like we were being led down a path to plan for the worst and that things were not going to work out," said John Schmid. "The miracle, to put it bluntly, was that in a matter of seven days, we went from organ donation to rehab. What a roller coaster it was."

Thats because people filter information differently. Being told someone in your family may die is a roller coaster for some. Could be the brother had limited contact with physicians and allowed his emotions to run with what little he knew. The mother, obviously, would have had more contact and no doubt things were better explained through different people, allowing her to ask more indepth questions.

Flat out, these doctors diagnosed this man incorrectly and were about to cut him up 'for sale.'

Brain dead and woke up 'from a coma ?' If he was brain dead, he was not in a coma. If he was in a coma, he was not brain dead.

"For days Schmid didn't seem to be responding, but what puzzled his doctor was that he did not see fatal injuries on the MRI scan."

"But he didn't have a blood clot in the most vital part of his brain, which we know he can't recover from. And he didn't have a massive stroke that would predict no chance of a useful existence."

These doctors better go back to class for medical analysis and diagnosis.

Here

(Or get their Vendors to be a little more responsive).
