Status: offline 		I'm a blue collar spanner monkey. I got white finger the beginning of Arthritis I don't have the right not to work as I need to support myself & my son. I also think that many who live round here shouldn't have the right to refuse it when they are young & fit. benefits shouldn't be a lifestyle choice. There are jobs, they just hurt people a little & you get dirty & smelly. well tough shit!

What kind of system is it when benefits are preferable & chosen over £500 clear per week for a 5 day week?

Inherently fucked is my call.

What gets me, Nine, is that for at least three decades, each new government has said that it'll 'crack down on workshy bogus benefits claimants' versus the government before, which was 'soft on them'. Tory and New Labour have been identical in that message.

I mean - really - how much more 'cracking down' can there be? People aren't just going to touch their caps and say 'Yes, right, I'll be broke, because that's all I deserve, scum that I am'. That world has gone - if, indeed, it ever existed. They'll steal, instead. And they'll steal all those deluxe items whose delights are pumped at them, relentlessly, on adverts that are ubiquitous - on posters, on the telly, everywhere. And if they get caught and banged up for stealing, they'll go to jail and learn from the experts how to steal so they *won't* get caught. . . . .

I'm pretty sure that to bring it back would require the 'uman rites akt to be repealed or there would be an army of leeches, sorry lawyers queueing up to post litigation.

Of course they don't lock chavs up. They can't afford to. There's a happy little myth that conservative government is cheap. Everyone is aware of how much it costs to be liberal and 'understanding' with chavs; far fewer know how much it costs to be punitive and authoritarian. Tories like to crack down on scum. But they don't like to pay a lot for it. This can cause cringes. The myth that Thatcher's governments were 'cheap' ones continues, despite the hard evidence. Hey ho.
