I got my first ever speeding ticket today.

$490.

Um....is that normal?

72 in a 45. And yes, I know ...shush.

Oh - and a follow-on question. If I request a hearing, do you think I can get the cost dropped a bit? (Massachusetts) I can't deny the speed - radar gun - but I'm told if I go to court they may at least reduce the cost.

I just don't know what to expect. Seriously, this is the most trouble I've been in. Ever. I'm usually quite law-abiding and fearful of consequence....when I'm not drag racing.

In some states, you would have lost your license for 25 over the speed limit. I had to hire a lawyer to get mine argued down to below that some 25 years ago. Cost me 900 then, plus the ticket of 250

I know...I consider myself very lucky. I wonder if the fact that I've never had a ticket before played into it.

Some police forces don't calibrate their radar guns as often as required by law, sometimes on a few miles over the speed limit you can get the ticket thrown out if the radar gun hasn't been checked and certified. My highest cost ticket was 67 in a 55 in an 18 wheeler in Arkansas...try $650[$125 for the 5 mph to 60,then $75 for each mph above 60].I was "caught" doing 67 in a truck that was computer limited to only go 64.....hmmmm.But the fastest I was clocked is another story entirely, and I am pleading the 5th on it[they didn't catch me].

The worst ticket, as written, was 75 in a 55 (back in the days of 55). The cop said he'd radared at 105, but due to distance and other cars, settled for the speed he'd paced when he caught up. More than that, he'd have had to arrest, and he was just coming on-shift, didn't want to spoil his evening. When asked how fast I was going, I told him I didn't know, was too busy driving ... (According to the tach, was well over twice the legal ... *L* ...) ...

... If it's going to kill your license with points, at least check with the TV-advert lawyers, it might be worth paying them instead of insurance hikes ...

I was going 90 in a 55. Knowing the sheriff got it down to 65 in a 55. The story I told him to get it knocked down, although crazy, was absolutely true. I really had no idea I was going that speed due to a POS car with screwy electronics. I on't remember how much the ticket was, was before the last few increases in dollar amounts.

I drive bloody awful fast but I usually have a clue when and where it's a really bad idea.

Generic Dude, on the other hand, has gotten bopped by the speed cameras in Cedar Rapids way too many times. $75 a pop. They don't count against your record as they do not know exactly who is driving the car, but they can add up pretty fast if you are not paying attention.......like he often is not.

I don't really speed...so my highest one was just 15€ as I drove once (I was tired) 62 in a 50km/hr zone... As they deduct 3 km/h as tolerance it was therefore 9 km/h too fast...and to be honest, I was very sleepy as they caught me in a well known area to give tickets

Once I was close to get a point on my license but they never figured out that it was me who passed the red light (I didn't really think so but ok...) Anyhow, it was dads car and they were so stupid not to ask him who drove but instead accused him...he said correctly that it wasnt him....then they tried mum who also responded that it wasnt her...and then they gave up. IMO that can only mean they couldn't recognise the person on the picture which is sometimes the case depending on the sun... Cause otherwise they wouldnt have given up and recognised instantly that it was neither dad nor mum... Cause in that case, if you cant recognise a person on a picture, you cant enforce it in front of a judge...So they likely assumed that parents would go all the way and realised they wont win and decided "it's not worth it..."

Is the only thing the speed you were cited for?  Is reckless driving also on the ticket? many times anything over the speed limit by 15 miles even, can be considered reckless driving.  You should be able to go to the clerk's office and get a copy of the file or call the police department and ask them how you can get a copy of the police file.  Always put your requests in writing.

i got caught 81 in a 70, and the ticket was 187.

You may be able to plea it out and get driving school and the judge may lower it.  In Chicago, many times they have supervision wherein you don't pay anything but court costs and after a year with no other issues, they don't report it to your insurance.  I would go to court for sure - there at least you can see what your other options are -- don't just pay the ticket.  They may take it into consideration it's your first ticket but usually the backgrounds for tickets only show the last 3-5 years.    Being that you were driving almost 30 miles over the speed limit, that is where your issue is.

I would consult perhaps with a lawyer, see what they would do to get the ticket fee down and then see what they would charge you.  The problem is it's not just a $490 ticket, its also your insurance premiums for the next 3-5 years.  Do not hire the attorney right out, consult with him -- which should be free usually.

Or if you have a friend who is an attorney, speak with them and see what they recommend.

A lot of people do. Unfortunately it hasn't been won in the local court system yet. It is nothing more than a revenue machine for the city they are in.

LaTigresse, it's true they've produced a lot of revenue. But a C.R. cop told me they have deterred more accidents then we realize, too.
I hate them too, but have found that if you use your cruise control you'll be ok.

I've never gotten a speeding ticket in my life, although been given a couple of warnings.

You need a lawyer. Yes, it's gonna cost you another $150. But this ticket is gonna kick the shit outta your insurance, and your lawyer will get it down given your previously clean record.

Once when I was having to work on the 4th of July, I pulled out of Liberty City onto I-95 with the 454 floored to get to the next work site so we could get samples back to the lab and get schools opened for summer session.

Mr FL trooper was there with radar.

He said "To be honest, I don't know how fast you were driving because my radar couldn't lock on you because you were accelerating so fast"

After he poked aorund in my sampling gear, respirators, TYVEK suits, asking questions etc he looked and said "Ya know, since you're honest with me and working today, I'm just going to write you a warning for improper lane change"  Did I mention I cut across 5 lanes in one motion? (there were asolutely no other cars on the road and the left exit was 800 yards from the onramp I used).

I'd say I used a lot of luck that day as I was well over 80 in a 55 and still accelerating when I saw him.

I dont remember the cost, but many moons ago....stopped for 105 in a 60, the trooper cut me a break and knocked it down to 86. That was also worth a 3 month suspension, and next one put me over 13 points and lost my license for another 6 months. (I had short hair at the time. If it had been a year later, with hair down to my shoulders, it would have been written at 105, and probably had my car impounded. NJ State Troopers didnt care much for long hair.)

More recently, 86 in a 65. That cost $455 plus $29 for traffic school. ($400 if I just took the points and the possible insurance hike).

Oh man, I've been trying to remember.  My last speeding ticket was something like 14 years ago.  I was actually going 65 in a 45, but the police officer only ticketed me for going 50.  I don't remember how much it was, but it sure could have been an expensive lesson.  When I think back, I'm horrified over it, because I had my four boys in the car with me.  I should have sent that police officer a thank you note, who knows.  Maybe he saved our lives.

Got a warning ticket for going 115 in a 55, on a two-lane highway, on New Year's Eve, with snow on the ground, and snow in the air...cop wanted to see the engine in my Porsche 911 turbo :-)

Somehow, god only knows why, but I've never gotten a ticket. Only gotten one written warning for that matter. Otherwise it's always been "Well, just slow down and drive safe out there." The one that surprised me the most was the 94 in a 65. I think it was total pity and good manners that got me out of that one. Was the night before my wedding, had JUST gotten my license back that day (lost my wallet) and the officer seeing that date on my license was slightly confused, had people from Maryland and Ontario in the car, was headed to go decorate the reception area... it was just a crazy stupid night. Not that I minded not getting a ticket for almost 30 over. That was the one I got the written warning on though.

Been pulled over for 10-12 over a couple times, but they just told me to slow down. I've found that being very polite and understanding with the officers goes a long long way. Don't get mad at them for pulling you over. You were breaking the law, they caught you. Your fault. (Not saying 'you' as anyone specific, by the way. Just a general 'you') I figure, yep, I was blazing down the road, cop caught me, dead to rights. If I get a ticket, I deserve it.

Wow, guys....get a lawyer.

I was going 80+ in a 55 (don't remember exactly how plus). My lawyer got it reduced to a parking ticket and a $90 fine with no points. Then he waived his fee, sent me a letter explaining the usual fee is $150 but hoped I'd refer the practice.
