Does Nina Simone count as Jazz, or is she blues?

popeye1250 -> RE: A thread for the cool people out there. (12/28/2011 10:40:43 PM)

Sorry, don't know of Nina Simone, paste one of her jazz songs up there and we'll see!

popeye1250 -> RE: A thread for the cool people out there. (12/28/2011 10:53:47 PM)

Now this is JAZZ.
***Fattburger.*** Great group.
I've found a lot of these by listening to satelite radio over the last 3-4 years on the jazz channels.

Anaxagoras -> RE: A thread for the cool people out there. (12/28/2011 11:04:57 PM)

Popeye, I reckon any Jazz with smoov synthesisers in it is pretty yuck from an aesthetic viewpoint unless its demented experimental stuff by the likes of Painkiller, John Zorn/Bill Frisell/Naked City http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BLh914PnzPs or Praxis/Transmutation http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3UBNro8IkGw which Mr. Buckethead was in before a Mr. Waxl came a' knockin'.

Of course.

Kind of Blue is cool but I think his follow-up album "Sketches of Spain" was more compelling. “Concierto de Aranjuez” is fantastic: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lVZq9Lk2hYQ and part two of the same track http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=emd0vJfyk2E

DarthVaderOfLove -> RE: A thread for the cool people out there. (12/28/2011 11:43:06 PM)

I think Captain Beefheart is the closest I come to jazz.

Doc at the Radar Station is a great album. For jazz I would probably tick the “Lick My Decals Off” box for stuff like “Flash Gordons Ape” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HZGrwDCEJNk and "Japan in a Dishpan" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BGDl71AYjzc

Of course she counts as jazz (unless she's singing a blues song). If people are having Cab Calloway, she definitely makes the grade.

I think the OP was after flashy instrumental bebop not torch singers, though. Still, if we are having jazz singers:
Cassandra Wilson - Harvest Moon

Aswad -> RE: A thread for the cool people out there. (12/29/2011 3:11:42 PM)

I'm amazed nobody mentioned Diana Krall yet... that does still qualify as Jazz these days, right?

Diana Krall - Live In Paris - Fly Me To The Moon
Diana Krall - Live In Paris - East Of The Sun

A lot of traditionals/standards in her material, but she certainly puts her own spin on it. Interested parties are encouraged to also check out Let's Fall In Love, Devil May Care and- obviously- Cry Me A River (personally, I prefer the version on Swans' World of Skin album, but that's definitely not jazz).

I would point out some from a Dune-related LP (the one with a B side that has some Bowie acid on it), but I can't seem to find the band info. Anyone?

Health,
al-Aswad.

NuevaVida -> RE: A thread for the cool people out there. (12/29/2011 5:20:59 PM)

Yay, another cool music thread with popeye!

Winton Marsalis - Linus and Lucy

Etta James - I'd Rather Go Blind

Stanley Clarke - School Days

John Coltrane - Violets for your Furs

Johnny Hartman - I see Your Face Before Me

Deodato - Also Sprach Zarathustra

Dave Brubeck - Take Five

Miles Davis and his awesome rendition of Concierto de Aranjuez

Tuck & Patti (my favorite duo) - You Take My Breath Away

Tuck & Patti - My Romance

Paco de Lucia, Al Di Meola and John McLaughlin - Mediterranean Sundance (Live in San Francisco version) - this is phenomenal!

Aswad, oh yeah, Diana Krall is great too!
She and Elvis Costello are married with kids for a while now.
One thing I (don't) like about her singing is that she either "holds back" or doesn't inhale enough air to get certain notes out strongly enough.
I wonder if she has asthma or another breathing problem? Sometimes at the end she sounds weak and strained.

Vida, oh yeah, I was going to put up "Take Five" by the Dave Brubeck Quartet.
