Status: offline 		Of course, the sheer theater of correcting disloyal people by having them sign a pledge about what they do on a secret ballot is interesting...but then, this is the party that gave us the Department of Homeland Theater--a pointless government expansion if ever there was one, and very expensive.

Status: offline 		You Yanks have a secret ballot there don't you? So how does it matter what piece of paper the snakeoil-men want you to sign. You sign, then vote for your choice as nominee, and then, come the general, you votes however you pleases. And should they ask, you, smiling, answer that you voted "the way you were supposed to."

Pretty much.

As I get older, the stupidities in politics just seem to get greater.

Given that all elections in the United States are by secret ballot - there's no way to know who someone voted for so there's no way to enforce such an oath. However, the Republican Party is a private organization and they are allowed to run their primaries in any way they see fit. If their Virginian organization feels the need to extract oaths from their membership and the party members there are comfortable with that - that's really their business.

My own personal opinion - vote for whomever you want. The way to ensure you vote for me is to be the best damn candidate possible. Anything else is just smoke and mirrors ... or possibly vaudeville.

And there`s rumors that she might replace Biden as VP.

To the 1st point.I don`t see how the oath would keep a dem party crasher from voting in the primary.

Status: offline 		I happen to live in Virginia.  This is nothing new.  Both parties have required a "pledge" from primary voters in past years, it's a worthless piece of paper.

The only reason the Democrats aren't doing it this year is that there is no Democratic primary.

Neither party has a monopoly on stupid.

Not sure why this would be an issue.   If a private group wants to institute their own rules for how their members vote, then let them.    If you don't like that group's rules, then join a different group.  This isn't a rule for general elections that determine who gets voted in, but only for that group to decide who they want to stand behind in an election.  So one group may institute one set of rules, and another group institutes a different set.

just look at the mess the candidates have taken part in, on the right.
I do wonder more about how 16 is gonna go, given the disgrace they are making of this one

I couldn't speak for Virginia since every state has their own method of recording votes but here in New York, in the old days on the old lever machines, you'd tick off the votes for each office and then pull a lever and the machine would mechanically tally your vote on a counter (which you wouldn't see). The totals on each machine were collected and manually tallied and then the total count compared to the counts listed on the tickers on the machine itself. A "recount" would be a recount of the manually tally.

Your identity was never recorded, so they had no way of knowing who any individual voted for - just the total number of votes.

Last year they ditched those machines and brought in the e-voting machines, which was a trainwreck. Now you fill out a scantron-esque form and then run it through a scanning machine. Since the form doesn't have your name on it - they still have no way of knowing who voted for whom. I assume in a recount they'd re-scan all the forms.
