There are a number of physiological reasons why the calorie method doesn't work for a large slice of the population.

In addition to this, calories can be misleading.  You can have the same number of calories in two completely different foods - a junk food versus something healthy that will sustain your energy and sense of "fullness" longer.  This is why WW abandoned calorie counting.

Never tried Sensa.  WW doesn't work for me, neither does calorie counting.  For some reason, every time I  start a diet, I get depressed and become obsessed with food.  What has helped me lose in the past was a medication I was on for my bipolar disorder.  Topamax made me feel full no matter what I ate and it took away the cravings to binge eat.  Unfortunately, I've been off the Topamax for about 2 1/2 years now and have gained back all the weight I lost when I was on it.  I've been struggling to get back into a pair of really cool white jeans that are now about 3 sizes too small.

When I was working with someone on weight loss and eating right she wanted me eating 5 times a day, 3 meals and 2 snacks and a little something before bed if needed, because some diabetics their blood sugars spike overnight,  and that was a huge adjustment for someone who didn't eat at all till they were ravenous, or usually didn't eat breakfast, because in the morning when I wake up the "breakfast hours" are largely over, or I am not hungry for most the day after waking up. or  I maybe just grazed a bit, but was largely a non eater.

IT was a huge adjustment,

Do you have any idea how hard it is to get in 50 grams of carbs when eating a tuna fish sandwich? Whole grain bread is only 12.... I am actually eating more now that I have in a long, lone time. But it is better food.. lots of salads... more protein... I have to force myself to eat 3 oz of steak... and cheese is a quick grab when I want to snack. But I also have to watch out for my cholesterol level... ugh... one thing after another!

Which is pretty much how sumo wrestlers eat to gain weight. They skip breakfast and then eat a large, carb laden lunch and dinner.

Understanding that people need to choose whatever means works best for them with weight loss, but just wanting to clear up some misinformation/misinterpretation of what's been said about WW.

WW focuses on low carbs, low fat, high fiber and high protein.  They just do all the work for you in calculating all of that and applying a point to it, so you can eat whatever you want as long as you stay within your point guideline.  I hardly do sugar substitutes because they're so bad for you and they make me feel crummy.  Then again, I don't eat much sugar, either - too high in carbs.

I eat all day long - just the right foods.  Foods higher in proteins and fiber will keep you full longer, so I tend to eat those foods so the carby/fatty stuff isn't wasted points.  For some reason, most fruit is excluded from the "point system" meaning it's Zero points.  So I do eat fruit all day.

I found some foods, even if within my points guidelines, are counter-productive to my weight loss (dairy being one) so I avoid them. Over time, you get to know what foods work and what foods do not work.  But I do pretty much eat any kind of food I want - just not the amounts I used to eat.

Anyway, I respect that some don't prefer WW and I'm not trying to change your minds.  But when I read that WW doesn't work because of replacing sugars with sweeteners, I wanted to clear that up in case anyone got the wrong idea.

I personally like WW because it's a way of eating that I can carry the rest of my life, and has come naturally to me now.  And that means I'll sustain the 90+ pound loss (and counting - yay!) I've achieved, and will maintain my healthy eating forever.  All other diets I've been on, as soon as the weight was lost, the diet was "over" and everything came back on, because I hadn't learned how to eat.

In any case, I send oodles of support and encouragement to everyone putting in an effort to lose weight and get healthy.  It's not easy, but it is life changing.

i actually didn't say that. i said that being on weight watchers makes me want to eat more. i don't feel fulfilled by what i'm eating, especially if i eat their ready meals.....or any diet ready meal. it's the faffing around with points and the crap they put in their meals. cooking within the points is just not suited to me. my point about sugar is that if i use sweeteners it makes me crave sugar. i don't get how it works, it just does.

believe me i've tried so many diets i could write a book about it. as i said, the most time i've spent dieting wasn't to lose weight, but to try not putting weight on. i'm extremely active with horses and such, and was even more so before. the points system just didn't work.

i did use slimming world at one time and lost weight to start with. i stuck to their plan religiously and got stuck at a certain point. i stopped using it after a while. i couldn't use the green days as it made me ill, but the reds were good.

Oh OK I wondered if I had misunderstood, and thought if I misunderstood, maybe others might, too.  Based on "weight watchers doesn't work for me i'm afraid. it actually makes me want to eat more. replacing sugar with sweetners actually makes me crave sugar more too." I tied the sweeteners comment with the part about ww not working for you.

I don't much like the ready-made meals, either.  I do it sometimes for work lunches because they're convenient and cheap, but they're definitely not "natural," that's for sure.

Tracking points does take effort, that's for sure.  But I figured losing weight would take effort. A friend of mine lost 40 on WW, got tired of tracking and stopped.  She's gained 12 back so far.   Another friend lost 60, stopped paying attention to points, and gained 40 back.  So it's definitely necessary to track the points, if doing WW.  When people say WW doesn't work, I wonder if the real issue is just not liking the tracking part - that's usually the case, as it is in your case as well.  I know I get tired of it sometimes, too, and every time I stop tracking, I stop losing.

Pain in the ass lol.

sorry, i get where you made the mistake, i meant they do the same thing, trigger the cravings for things i shouldn't be having.

the points tracking was only a problem in that i am uber competative and got rather obsessive about it. it was in my mind all the time and i hated that. the fact that i was so careful and it wasn't working made me feel worse. i've had friends use ww and lose weight, but they never keep it off afterwards. again they have got obsessive with the points which i don't think is good.

i guess that's why the cutting diet suits me better. very little fat and carbs, i know roughly how much things weight by sight and what to eat when. fitting the meals in and remembering to eat is really the only issue, but i work with it. also i tend to crave much less and when the free day comes round i find i'm not really fussed about the treats and just eat something meal wise that i couldn't in the week.

the first week i usually lose between 7-9lb because my body is terrible for retaining water. but i will still lose 2-3lb the week after too. having dieted for so long though i can get rather depressed so i tend to do the diet for about 4 weeks and then go onto maintainance to prevent that happening.

Dieting definitely starts in the mind, first, that's for sure, and can be mentally exhausting.  I know I went through a 6 month period without losing anything and it felt very discouraging but I hung in there, added some exercise, and it started coming off again.  I have had friends that have maintained their weight loss for years to come after ww, but only because they remain aware of everything they're eating, whether actually tracking or not.

But it's definitely a big mental effort.  I don't look at it as dieting anymore.  I've simply changed my relationship with food, and changed the way I eat.  I've been at this for 3 years and have no intention of changing the way I eat back to how I ate before.  But looking at it that way (my new way of eating, rather than "diet") was the mental relief I needed so I didn't suddenly feel resistant to dieting, which is what always happened before.

I think whatever someone does, looking at it as "changing the way I eat" might help with that mental wall that seems to come up when embarking on a "diet".   Also, changing the way you eat to something you can sustain in years to come, will also help (rather than crash diets, only to go back to "normal" eating and gain everything back).

It's definitely difficult, and I give tons of applause to those who put in such an effort, no matter which weight loss effort they engage in.  If you think about it, it's all positive in that it's a way to do something good for yourself.

My motivations for losing weight are perhaps different than most folks so finding a weight loss program has been difficult at best. Working out for me has only caused me bulk back up which is something I really don't want I'm so out of the over compensating phase. So what I want is to loss the weight and keep it off based on my reading including here it seems like Weight Watchers is about the best I've read about so far or did miss something? Hoping I'm not once again living to male potential AGAIN. LOL!

What kind of working out were you doing?  If you were doing weights, then yes, I can see bulking.  I had to learn that lots of repetitions with lighter weights helped me burn, rather than increasing the weights, then I started bulking.

However, cardio, like running or the elliptical or stairmaster should not cause bulk, that I know of.  I'm no expert, though.

Really, that's an interesting fact. I know some atheletes do carbo load right before a big event.

the difference is the energy expendature to match the intake ... carb loading  for most athletes is to give them endurance and they use it straight away (or close to) ... its easy energy for the body to directly use as they do what ever it is they are doing

Sumo's load and then physically  relax allowing their body to convert the calories to body weight

I know one of the gyms personal trainers when I was going to planet fitness, didn't like calling it dieting, because it brought to mind so much of the negativity of dieting, and liked to instead call it healthy eating and yes, changing the way you look at food.

When I was doing my best and got down to 309 I did it by cooking low fat, low sugar and low carb as best as possible, choosing healthy recipes and being  at the gym 3 days a week and going for walks the rest, and I didn't have to bust my butt at the gym, I did 5 mins on the treadmill 5 mins on a leg crunch machine, then marched in place until I was out of breath, so about 25 mins at the gym.

I helped my room mate with an on line health class a few semesters ago.

Its odd how the body uses food. Not odd really, but interesting. My advice is to look at how each component is needed; fiber, water, fat, protein and so on...if you know how the body uses these and how to balance them, you start to think about what kinds of them you are taking into your body, or at least I did.

For a workout program, I chose something that I would find fun, and beneficial; Belly Dance. Its a hardcore work out for the thighs and abs, and you look sexy doing it, once you get the hang of it.

Don't skip meals, the body thinks you are starving it, and it stores everything.

Eat smaller meals more often, but stick to things that are healthy; fruit, whole grains, veggies, yogurt (which totally helps with digestion which helps with weight loss).

Watch your salt intake, as it makes you retain water.

Always leave food on your plate. As it has been said, it takes the body 20 minutes to realize it is full. So, chew slowly, eat healthy meals, and leave some for later.

The best diet of all time is divorce though. Lol. I went from a size 22 to a jr's size 13 in 7 months. That was 2 years ago. Im still a 13.
