Why Obama may be eyeing Mrs. Clinton for the 2012 ticket.

11/25/11

Paul Starr, co-editor of The American Prospect, a liberal-left magazine, has observed that 45 percent of the people who disapprove of Mr. Obama's performance view Mrs. Clinton favorably. It is fair to say that Mrs. Clinton's addition to the ticket would be a substantial gain for President Obama that he badly needs next November, since she is, as Mr. Starr notes, a member of the part of his administration that has the highest approval rating, and more important she has not at all been a part of the disastrous economic policies that have caused the Obama drop in popularity. Even better for Election Day, she would gain support among older white voters, who did not support Mr. Obama very much in 2008. Mr. Starr also cites a Suffolk University Florida poll that shows that Mrs. Clinton on the Obama ticket would win Florida for the two of them, even if Sen. Marco Rubio is the Republican's vice presidential candidate.

Bob Woodward: Hillary Clinton as VP is 'on the table'

10/6/10

Speculating that President Barack Obama will replace Vice President Joe Biden with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on the 2012 ticket has been a private pastime among some Democrats over the past few months, and it broke into the open Tuesday night when investigative reporter Bob Woodward said in an interview on CNN it was a possibility.

Appearing on "John King, USA" to promote his book “Obama’s Wars,” Woodward was asked by King about possible “political asides” that cropped up while he was doing research.

“A lot of people think if the president's a little weak going into 2012, he'll have to do a switch there and run with Hillary Clinton as his running mate,” King said, repeating gossip that’s swirled for several months and appeared from time to time on blogs.

“It's on the table,” Woodward replied. “And some of Hillary Clinton's advisers see it as a real possibility in 2012. President Obama needs some of the women, Latinos, retirees that she did so well with during the 2008 primaries. So they switch jobs and [it's] not out of the question.

I don't see this happening. It would send a signal that Obama is a weak candidate, and is worried about the election.

I'm trying to think of the last time an incumbent President ran for reelection with a new VP.  I can't recall it happening AT ALL back to Roosevelt, and likely back way further.

Edited to add: I remember the rumors that Bush would drop Cheney.  Didn't happen.

I'm excited at the possibility! Any other Democrats / undecideds feel the same?

Lance predicted WAY back - - -  I'll go look that Obama would win in 2008, 2012 (basically without regard to VP-candidate)  and THEN Mrs. Clinton would waltz into the Oval  Office in 2016 (and possibly 2020.)  How 'bout an all Clinton ticket in both those years - Hillary and Chelsea.  Then in 2024, Chelsea as President candidate, making those Adams-es and Kennedys look like pikers.

VP candidates have little if anything to do with the Presidential race.

Without Googling, and without DC answering <our local Pres. data bank> name ANY V.P. before you were born..... I can say Eisenhower and Nixon and ruin it for alot of folks, but Truman's Veep? Got me..... And Kennedy's VP of Johnson is just too well known <oath on plane and all that,> so that pair is out of the running.

WORSE - name veep candidates of pres.candidates that didn't win ! !  Dewey's running mate?

Small regional "tip-o-the-hat" Johnson to Texas for Kennedy's N.E.Blue Blood.... but.... small effect.

Now Lance, why restrict Hillary to 8 years when, as VP under Obama, she can still run things and have 12 years.

Hillary as VP, a shoe in at election time. After that, it would be hers to lose... Cant think of anyone on the GOP side to match her in both experience and balls.

I don't see her running in 2016. One reason would be her age. It's grueling to run for president when you are nearing age 70.

“I do not think it's even in the realm of possibility, and in large measure because I think Vice President Biden has done an amazingly good job,’’ Clinton told Guthrie in an interview that aired partially on Thursday. “He has taken on the burden of, you know, selling the economic plan, of traveling the country, of answering people's questions.’’

The possibility of an Obama/Clinton ticket in 2012 has not even been raised to her, she said.

“It's maybe a subject for speculation on Google, but it's not a serious issue in the administration,’’ Clinton said.

Ah well.. a nice fantasy while it lasted.

Id like to see her do it for herself, not for others

I could see O'Blunder doing this... it's not like Bumble-Fuck-Biden hasn't put his big, dumb foot in his mouth more than once -- and given this would open the door for Hillary to run as Prez in four years (assuming they win, that is), I could see it as a tempting offer for her as well.
