I'm trying to think of the last time an incumbent President ran for reelection with a new VP.  I can't recall it happening AT ALL back to Roosevelt, and likely back way further.

Edited to add: I remember the rumors that Bush would drop Cheney.  Didn't happen.

Nixon dumped Spiro Agnew. But that was after a scandal.

MM, that's not what I meant.  I intended to say that a President dumped a VP between terms for electability purposes.  Agnew was dumped during a term.

FDR is the only one that I'm aware of and he dropped VPs twice - his former VP "Cactus Jack" Garner ran against him when he went for a third term and Roosevelt chose Herny Wallace as VP. The DNC forced Roosevelt to drop Wallace in '44 and Truman became the VP.

I agree with you - it's unlikely that President Obama will drop Biden, although at this point I'm not sure what Joe Biden is adding to the ticket.

that Obama would win in 2008, 2012 (basically without regard to VP-candidate)  and THEN Mrs. Clinton would waltz into the Oval  Office in 2016 (and possibly 2020.)  How 'bout an all Clinton ticket in both those years - Hillary and Chelsea.  Then in 2024, Chelsea as President candidate, making those Adams-es and Kennedys
ETA: and Bushes

look like pikers.

Watch out, Hillary! History of assinations (and attempts) on Presidents elected in years ending in 0 - every 20 years.

tazzygirl -> RE: Bye Bye Biden? (12/29/2011 9:07:20 PM)

when I started getting into US politics, seriously , I heard he was liable of gaffe after gaffe after cockup and was expecting to hear much more about him and his antics, I know he had one a while ago where he was seen with his eyes shut sposedly sleeping, but I didnt hear much "bad" about him at al. Im going to add to that , that I havent really taken much notice, but there havent been many topics mentioning him screwing up here on cm.
Maybe I ignored them. Seems to me he hasnt done much detrimental to his position?

kalikshama -> RE: Bye Bye Biden? (12/30/2011 11:25:07 AM)

Lately Biden hasn't done anything detrimental or added anything. In 2008, he helped lend the ticket the illusion of experience, and especially helped in his home state of PA.

My Dad doesn't think Biden would be a particularly good SOS and thinks Clinton has done an excellent job, and would like her to stay there as he doesn't want to give her a boost towards presidency.

(Other than being a staunch supporter of Labor, Dad is more moderate than I am.)

Joe has played a very crucial role on national security, especially Afghanistan. If I revealed it to you I would have to dispatch a black helocopter. [;)]

I don't see her running in 2016. One reason would be her age. It's grueling to run for president when you are nearing age 70.

Reagan started his first term at 70.

Isn't this the job description of a VP?

“I do not think it's even in the realm of possibility, and in large measure because I think Vice President Biden has done an amazingly good job,’’ Clinton told Guthrie in an interview that aired partially on Thursday. “He has taken on the burden of, you know, selling the economic plan, of traveling the country, of answering people's questions.’’

The possibility of an Obama/Clinton ticket in 2012 has not even been raised to her, she said.

“It's maybe a subject for speculation on Google, but it's not a serious issue in the administration,’’ Clinton said.

Ah well.. a nice fantasy while it lasted. [:D]

Reagan started his first term at 70.

If I recall, based on medical reports, he also finished his first term at 71, and was pretty much a stand in for the second one.

Yeah but, she can't.  She's a soldier now.

This wouldn't surprise me at all.  How old is Biden? (I don't actually know).

I bet it's being discussed, at minimum.

Hillwilliam -> RE: Bye Bye Biden? (12/30/2011 8:15:33 PM)

Obama won't pick Hillary as a running mate for one big reason.

Lately, a lot of candidates seem to pick a totally idiotic running mate as life insurance. Bush I / Quayle comes to mind as does McCain/Palin.
An assassin would have him in the crosshairs and suddenly have the thought of "Holy shit, if I pull this trigger, look what will be prez".

An Obama/Hillary ticket would have the OPPOSITE effect.[8D]

Edited to swap idiots.

happy now?

tazzygirl -> RE: Bye Bye Biden? (12/30/2011 8:20:00 PM)

Pst.. Hill... McCain/Palin

Are you kidding? They circled around him and threw their bodies over him.
