Status: offline 		Heh... I bet you thought this poll was about drunken frat parties and other forms of debauchery. It isn't, but I am glad you came to vote anyway.

My poll is about our furry wild animal friends. I live in the city and my apartment complex is a nice place with some nice land around it and I am close to a small lake. The neighbor lady (not the insane one) feeds the birds. I feed a chipmunk. I have sunflower seeds and peanuts for him that I put out every morning and then I sit out on the porch and drink my coffee and work some cryptograms and watch him feed his little face. I happen to love chipmunks and I am so glad that I have one here to befriend.

What I am curious about is who here has a soft spot in their heart for our wild friends and what your particular animal of choice is?

Status: offline 		I am surrounded by wildlife where I live.
I've seen deer, rabbits, bear, coyote, foxes, turkeys, raccoons, box turtles, pheasants, guinea hens, snakes and the usual assortment of squirrels and chipmunks in my yard.  Bird wise I get a range too...blue jays, robins, owls, titmice, bluebirds, sparrows, purple finches, woodpeckers, goldfinches, chickadees, hawks, cardinals,hummingbirds and a lot more. 
One of my favorite things to do is to hang on the back deck in the evening and watch the bats come out and start swooping around.  They are wild to watch.

Status: offline 		i live in the city -- free of the horror of crickets -- but i like even the skunks.  The only animal i dislike is the damned nightengale that sings its head off every morning at 3am.  It's like having a neighbor with a rooster.

Status: offline 		Our apartment is on the edge of this large wooded area with a creek and we have so many birds. I love to sit out on the deck and listen to their conversations.

Status: offline 		I honestly love all animals although I do get a little squeamish around some of them ...

I personally own:

a blue and gold macaw named Hanibal,
a chattering lorikeet named Shelby,
two dogs named Tasha and Roxie and
a cat that I bottlefed as a kitten named Jake.

I have had rabbits, ferrets, mice, gerbils, a baby skunk, a baby opossum, several wild birds that were later released when they could care for themselves and a racoon who never really left, he just came and went as it pleased him. After I'm done with my medical coding classes, I want to study to become a vet tech.

Where I live right now there's a lot of construction so about the only wild animal I get is frogs but I'm hoping to see more birds and perhaps even a chipmunk or some squirells. When I lived in Texas I got to deal with spiders bigger than my thumb and horny toads that look like tiny little dinosaurs. Freaky but cool!

Status: offline 		I live on a hill overlooking a valley with a creek. Lots of trees and to the west of me is around 100 acres of setaside land (for those that do not know the term, the government pays the owner of the property to leave it alone)There is also several ponds within earshot and a river just over the hill behind us.  My pets (two largish breed dogs and a cat) are not allowed to run wild. I also have two very entertaining horses here on the property. That all being said we have every imaginable bit of wildlife for this part of the country and some that are just becoming more prevelant in the past few years (cougar, black bear, bobcats, eagles and the beautiful kestrels) We are very lucky here to not have alot of concern for dangerous animals such as poisoness snakes. I know that there is the occasion timber rattlesnake but in all my years of running wild thru the woods I have never seen one. I am thrilled to have a house with many large windows and am always glancing out to see whats going on with my furry/feathered neighbours. I love all the animals for the balance they bring. I think they all give me enjoyment. My favourite music is the sound of the birds in the spring when I can first open windows or the owls, crickets and locusts at night. I cannot leave out the coyotes, especially the pups yipping in the summer. There is nothing cooler than the calls of the eagles when they visit in the early winter. I see alot of deer that cross along the creek, its always a treat when I see the big bucks or the small spotted fawns. Occasionally we have a brave coyote come close to the house during the day, I have one I even got a few photos of thru the window. When I went outside he got camera shy. One year I had a possum that just loved "suprising me" early in the morning when I went down to the barn to feed the horses. Thank goodness he or she moved. Okay, I could babble on and on about alllllllllll of the various creatures I share my valley with and it would bore you all to tears. Needless to say, I am blessed and could never pick a favourite.

Status: offline 		Living in the city, I mostly only have the pleasure of having squirrels, birds, and bats in my back yard.  I always put dried ears of corn for the squirrels, birdfeed for the birds (unless I am feeling real creative and make a hanging bird feeder out of a pinecone, peanut butter, then roll it in seed), if I have left over fruit (which is generally always) especially grapes I throw it up at the bats, sometimes they swoop and catch it but more often than not it winds up on the grass for the birds.  There is a lake a block from my house, occasionally walking down to feed ducks bread crumbs, crackers, popcorn is nice in the evening.

Frogs?  No thank you, I have them and wish I didn't.  I realize they are good to eat mosquitos (Living in Florida, mosquitos are a nuisance) but prefer they stay far away from me.

Edited:  I was raised on a farm in the boonies.....I miss it a lot!!!

Occasionally while gardening I come across a glass snake (aka legless lizard), they shoo away easily enough.

Status: offline 		At the Jersey shore, it's the seagulls.  I don't feed them (try it sometime, you'll see why!) but  I love to watch them bicker with each other.  My other pet project is "rescuing" the horseshoe crabs on the bay.  It's the start of mating season, and they get stranded on the shore when the tide goes out.  I go for walks in the evening and throw them back in.  Well, not really throw them....more like scoot them till they catch a wave.

What a great thread!
 
I have two cats. (Figaro and Chloe). Recently an owl family has moved into my neighborhood and I love to hear them at night. The only wild animals around here are birds and squirrels though as I live too close to Orlando.
 
Quite some time ago I lived near the Wekiva River in Longwood and had a "pet" racoon. He really just came and went as he pleased, but if I took a nap in the afternoon with the door open (which I did frequently on the weekends) I would awake to find him nestled up next to me on the couch, like a cat.
 
I love all animals, even some reptiles with the exception of snakes...scared to death.

Status: offline 		I have always had animals and believe they are an integral part of life. I have a dog, a cat, a bird, 4 hamsters, and four fish... while taking care of them all can sometimes be a pain... I enjoy each one for what they add to my life... and since I can't keep a plant alive to save my life I surround myself with other critters. We draw them too... my dog when he was a pup found my husband... when he died.. he bonded with me, the cat jumped the gate in the last house we had and has been with us ever since... the bird jumped on my son's hand when he was pointing out how fearless she was in the petshop... the hamsters were just two in the beginning...lol and the fish... well they simply will not die... not sure what lifespan is but these guys are too big for the tank I have had them for 3 years and they will not die...lol Guess I am doing something right... oh and hamsters have separate tanks now...lol

Status: offline 		I grew up in the country...i like all of Mother Nature's critters.  Before my divorce, i fed two mallard ducks daily all summer long....the following spring, they returned...and had babies.  The next spring, they brought a couple of their friends and hung out for the summer....and so it progressed until i had more duck poop on my driveway than i did pavement...LOL...but that's ok....nothing a hose wouldn't take care of.

Status: offline 		A most excellent topic. I, of course have my cats, Otis and Daisy. Remember, Daisy Day will be coming up in July, so start getting ready.

On the wild side, I share this property of mine with: deer, squirrels, skunks, jackrabbits, bunnies, squirrels, foxes, the occasional bobcat, coyotes, owls, several species of hawk (including red tails and swainsons), falcons, burrowing owls, swallows, hummingbirds, quail, other birds, lizards (several species), coachwhip snakes, bull snakes, rattlesnakes (haven't seen one yet, but they must be here), vinegaroons, scorpions, tarantulas, and some other spiders.

The quail are my favorites. They hang out in the bushes all around here, conversing with each other. In the morning, a bunch of them come out of the brush and parade around the house. The daily "March of the Quails" down the length of my deck amuses my cats no end. Sometimes one will saunter right up to the window and do a beak-to-nose staredown with Daisy. I dunno, they might be friends.

Status: offline 		I love animals and live in a more or less rural area in a fast-growing suburb of DC.  Currently, I have a wonderful German Shepherd named Abby (who, at 95 pounds of muscle, is a marvelous deterrent to would-be car thieves when I run into 7-11 late at night - though if you gave her a piece of cheese, she'd hand over the car keys!), a black cat named Chloe, a dwarf rabbit named Bugs (by my youngest), and a little box turtle named Herman.  Late at night, I can hear the frogs bellowing at each other in the pond nearby.  There are always lots of birds to listen to as well, my late mother's favorite were the cardinals.

I'm partial to large breeds of dogs, but I'm also the kinda guy who will take a spider that was found in the house and place it back outside without hurting it.
