tj444 -> RE: Have you shot your TV? (1/1/2012 10:47:28 PM)

I dont have a tv but i do watch shows on my computer.. there are some shows i like and i also watch a ton of HGTV and record the hgtv episodes i like. The episodes on tv tho are usually different from the ones online (getting the tv episodes to record would be a reason for me to get a tv & cable). I like youtube too and download the vids i like.

i think it depends on if you believe that you are getting alpha waves and that affects you, i never knew if that was true or not..

i think if you are like some people and watch the news a lot, it tends to make you negative.. i dont watch the news, i get some news from the headlines on yahoo or whatever, online articles from magazines, etc but most of what i read is on certain subjects, the rest i bypass.

xxblushesxx -> RE: Have you shot your TV? (1/1/2012 10:52:08 PM)

Yeah, I don't watch the news unless there's something specific I want to see. But I do get the top headlines in my twitter feed, usually before the news has reported it.

I haven't shot the TV but if I get one more letter, phone call or house call from the TV Licensing people I am probably going to strangle one of them.
.................................and not buying a licence.

The last time I even had to say 'Well you know, sometimes I hear voices in my head and it might be from the BBC, does this mean I need a licence?'

Buying a license??

The BBC is a publicly funded entity and because of this in the UK if you own any equipment (TV, computer, cellphone) capable of receiving a TV signal then you are required by law to buy a television licence. The TV licensing people send out detector vans and inspectors and make random calls and being caught without a licence results in prosecution.

I don't have a TV and have no way of streaming live TV on my computer or receiving a live broadcast signal so I don't buy a licence. I'm almost sure that they use whatever personal data you submit for the licence for other purposes. Therefore I'm not sure whether they regard me as a freak for not owning a television or are upset because I haven't bought a licence but every so often I go through the harrassment of being asked if I now have a television and if I also have a licence to go with it.

Trust me, it's a bit like having part of your life turned into a Monty Python sketch every so often.

Them: 'Do you have a TV licence?'
Me: 'No I don't.'
Them: 'Why don't you have a TV licence? You can face prosecution if you have a TV without a licence.'
Me: 'I don't own a television, so I don't have a licence.'
Them: 'We may send out a detector van or make a visit to verify if you have a television or not.'
Me: 'I don't have a television and don't intend to own one.'
Them: 'But we are updating our records, and we can see that you don't have a television licence.'
Me: 'I know. I don't have a licence because I don't own a television.'

This usually happens a few times before they get the message.

Casteele -> RE: Have you shot your TV? (1/2/2012 12:29:16 AM)

That seems pretty silly, stella, but I don't know all the facts there. Like, is the BBC involved in *any* television broadcasts, or just one specific channel or something? Does the UK not have laws against such monopolies, or is this some kind of exception? I can only imagine if PBS (Public Broadcast System, our version of a publicly funded television station) here were to find a way to enforce making us pay a license to even own a television, regardless of whether or not we ever watch the PBS channel. We'd be having the Boston Tea party all over again, only this time with televisions and the US gov't. :-P

myotherself -> RE: Have you shot your TV? (1/2/2012 12:54:14 AM)

Stella is absolutely correct.

If your TV or computer is capable of receiving any BBC station, then you need a licence. Even if you don't watch it, you still have to pay.

A few years back I had no computer and no television for about a year. I got multiple letters from the TV Licence people demanding I bought a licence, and even had "the Man from the Ministry" with his van to check for TV signals.

They knocked on the door and asked if I had a TV. I said 'no'.

They asked if they could come in and check. I said 'not without a warrant'.

They left, but they did say they were going to get a warrant (they didn't ever get one).

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Have you shot your TV? (1/2/2012 6:39:35 AM)

The professor I worked for when I was in college the first time said that the French government was the same way, they followed you around wanting their license monies.

Here, we have cable tv fees with mysterious taxes attached instead.

barelynangel -> RE: Have you shot your TV? (1/2/2012 6:44:29 AM)

I'd make them go through the trouble of getting a warrant to "visit."  As they aren't law enforcement, they wouldn't be allowed a warrant lol.

myotherself -> RE: Have you shot your TV? (1/2/2012 6:58:08 AM)

we get a limited number of television stations included 'free' with our licence fee. If you want cable or satellite services we have to pay extra for those.

LaTigresse -> RE: Have you shot your TV? (1/2/2012 7:12:34 AM)

I have to agree with Angel in that, the computer is far more addictive and potentially destructive to a person than a television. Anyone that brags online about not having television because of it's evils, is going to get an eyebrow raise from me.

That all said, I have a BEOOOOOOTIFUL television that I got for Xmas last year. It is sitting about 10 feet in front of me in all it's HD glory, though turned off at the moment. We don't watch serial television or made for tv dramas. Unless it's a good movie, fictional stuff doesn't interest me. Our programmes of choice tend to be on History, National Geographic, HGTV, etc...or sports.

Sadly for G.D. ( he is in mourning and rather cranky about the subject...) we are ditching the dish tv service for awhile to cut living costs. We will still have the television and loads upon loads of DVD's with more available for rent not far away. Yet he is the one that is addicted to the black screen. If he is gone, I may go for days without turning it on. But I guarantee, within moments of him getting out of bed this morning, it will be turned on to ESPN so he can have the assurance that all is right with the world. The internet is my tie to the world of information and the satellite television connection is his. If both of us did not use the internet to actually make a few dollars, it would be going also. But alas, it is a business expense.

GreedyTop -> RE: Have you shot your TV? (1/2/2012 7:27:06 AM)

I have 2 TVs. No cable/satellite service. The big one in the living room is hooked up to my video players (DVD *and* VHS!! WOOHOO!). The little one in my bedroom has one of those air signal adapter thingies, so as long as the antenna is positioned correctly (and that varies from local station to local station), I can get some local programming.

I don't watch either very often.

Thanks for the explanation, Stella. BTW, I laughed out loud when I first read the voices in your head sentence!!

tj444 -> RE: Have you shot your TV? (1/2/2012 2:25:50 PM)

that really sucks.. i didnt know that the BBC was rabid like that and had those exclusive "rights".. Canada has the CBC which is public broadcast channel but its paid for by taxes and advertising too, i guess.. I would rather have the choice to pay for cable & other extra channels than pay a license fee and be harassed constantly if i didnt want it... You & Stella (& all Brits) have my sympathies..

Have you shot your TV? If you've gotten rid of your TV, did you find it difficult?

My only concern is that I am alone in my house a lot. I use the TV as background noise. But is that a crutch?

I didn't shoot the TV but a stoned maniac gangster friend of mine did.  He is currently doing life, not for shooting the TV... for shooting someone else.

Yes, I got rid of my TV for a couple of years and stopped listening to the radio (except NPR on sunday afternoon).  I also eliminated sugar, hormone laced meat, religion, monogamy and a bunch of other unhealthy things.  It wasn't difficult but I wasn't alone.  I owned a record company, medical clinics and a world class recording studio.  I often worked 14 hour days and I had a poly house full of slaves and many good books.  My time was precious and when I was home, sex, food and sleep were priorities.  When I craved a movie, we all went to the theater.

Wow. They just... Wow. Vive la Revolution. I mean, where do they get off?

Can't recall the last time I turned on my TV and watched anything that didn't come out of a tape or disk I inserted by hand. Having lost my formerly cool digs in the woods to passive aggressive idiot housemate, I can now access internet easily enough ...and that is real handy when the weather is bad. If I had a TV, I would probably have a belly. To use a Television, you kinda gotta sit there on someone elses' schedule. With a computer, you can walk away, come back, and find things just where you left them.

VirginPotty -> RE: Have you shot your TV? (1/5/2012 11:16:16 AM)

I can't believe what the UK folks have to go thru!!  BBC be damned I say!

I must admit to using the tv as a crutch if only for background noise.  I've tried the radio but I don't know why & there's a definite difference and it doesn't work for me at all. I believe it stems from my childhood.  My sister & I were left alone alot at night from 6pm til 2am-4am when my mother went to work and our neighborhood had a history of break-ins & we've called the cops multiple times for instruders on the outside peeking in our back door or just seen walking around our backyard.  I NEEDED that distraction and I lived (safely) vicariously thru the folks in tv land.
It took me YEARS to get over having to use the tv to fall asleep by.  I'd set the timer on the tv, use the blackout on the screen to lessen the light and go to sleep.  I had it really bad.

I don't have cable & can't get a tv signal but I do have an endless supply of dvd's and vhs tapes. I'm the type that doesn't mind watching something over/over again so I don't mind buying having my own library vs. Netflex (to which I don't have a subscription).
I have no internet at home or even a computer.  I don't have to work from home so no need for a computer.  I sold my laptop just last year.  I only use the computer at work so of course no porn but that's ok[:D]

The only thing I miss is being able to watch the news in the morning but I just read it online when I get to work.
I can afford to get cable or a dish but I refuse to pay bet. $40-$60 bucks a month for basic tv.  Hell if it was only $40 consistently then yes....MAYBE but that's usually just a promo to get customers.  Besides, I've grown used to NO commercials!  When my girl lived w/my last year she had cable installed at her expense and I was NOT impressed with it so when she left I had it discontinued.
