Hi there,
I am just another dom but i am also a student from Greece, just finished a research on “High Capable Profile Athletes”. My research went well and is, by all means, finished. During this research i’ ve reached to several conclusions, but as always, new theories arized. I am trying to prove or not a theory here. The connection between “Masochists” to “High Capable Profile Athletes” . In order to do that, i could use your expertise:

Do masochists “identify” with one or several of the following signs?

1] Smooth food abuse [Unexpected or expected weight gain]
2] Smooth alcohol abuse [more than 5 drinks / day]
3] Coffe abuse [more than 5 cups / day]
4] Smooth drug abuse. [Pain killers etc]
5] Smooth depression [Feeling the world is pointless] , when they stop “performing masochists acts”, for a long time.

If so, it is clear to me that, high capable athletes connect to masochists [same signs] and that connection is called “Dopamine Hunt”. If not this theory is another “toilet theory” :)

Thank you for helping a poor student becoming a useful [?] doctor

In my younger years I was a dancer, which I guess is somewhat athletic. I am and have always been a masochist.
However, my weight is fairly consistant. It does not go up and down unless I change habits.
I drink maybe a few times a year and never to excess
I have 2 cups of coffee per day.. is that excessive?
I do not take drugs of any sort, including pain killers even though I have a damaged muscle on my back/shoulder
The world has a point, I am not always sure of my place in it but it is not depressing. I figure it must be someone elses turn to play.

Personally though.. I have always felt obsessively athletic people to be masochistic. lol No freakin way would I put myself through the kind of stuff they do daily.
Phhht. I'll take my masochism plain, thanks.

Depression and high functioning athlete are mutually not possible.

Do athletes get a temporary high? Sure. Most people feel pumped up after going to the gym. Does that mean that everybody who goes to the gym is a substance abuser? Not at all.

I've known a lot of athletes and the only thing that might be applicable here is the caffeine usage. Because they're running on lack of sleep during competitions. But after the meet is over, they sleep in and don't still need that level of caffeine.

Thank you. 1 count for toilet theory also. But let me explain it a little bit further

Dopamine is the "go get it, just do it, i want it" chemical, produced by the brain. It drives you to act. It makes you feel good and it' s a natural analgesic. [When you get a punch you realise it after some seconds, and you feel pain after some seconds or more, others don't feel anything. Dopamine is responsible for that]
A high capable profile athlete, is an athlete who is by nature very sensitive to dopamine explosions or an athlete with "a high dopamine production rate", under heavy pressure.
It 's the reason he/she tries more and hopefully performs better. A potential champion. But, dopamine is an analgesic and that means that in fact, is very very addictive. Every high capable athlete is sort of speak, a dopamine addict, but this is not so bad as it sounds.

- Pain produces dopamine explosion. [Pain produces in fact the biggest dopamine explosion].
- Coffe produces dopamine micro-explosion. More coffe more explosion.
- Alcohol produces dopamine explosion [among others].
- Drugs produce high level dopamine explosion [among others]

Every High Dopamine [Capable] Profile Athlete, seeks this sources of dopamine explosions, when not training. And i am investigating this connection to masochists.

It is well known, that masochists enjoy pain. They feel good. Perfectly normal for the above reasons [sensitive to or high dopamine production rate]. But when they are not enjoying pain are they seeking for the alternative dopamine explosion sources ? If so.... is a masochist a potential High Capable Profile Athlete?

That is the question.

Hi this is far from the truth in actual fact. A certain gentleman & he really is one called John Kirwan. One of the finest rugby players of all time & one of the hardest men to walk the planet battled depression throughout a peerless international career. He continues his battle to this day & is rated as one of the worlds greatest coaches.

I would also like to add that I have met him & it was like being in the presence of God. Having met several world greats I suspect that depression goes hand in hand with the role. A certain Jonny Wilkinson springs to mind & Zinzan Valentine Brookes wife suggested he suffered too as a player.

Having played myself at lower pro levels I know the come down post match was what we might call sub drop. I have sat in a changing room scared, suffering from vertigo & shaking like a leaf. From Saturday teatime until tues night training was hell to deal with.

I guess I apply to coffee abuse, not sure what you mean by 'smooth' depression but I have depression in spades, though that started long before I delved into masochism

None of the others apply to me at all, and much, if not all, the high I get from masochism is sexual, never had that once from exercise lol

Rugby is a hardcore impact sport, it does have similarities. Well for me it did. If I got hurt in the 1st couple of minutes I played a blinder. So I would go looking for trouble lol. Also I have been trampled by 30 blokes. It was a blast.

Not sure what "smooth abuse" means, but I don't identify with any of these categories. I don't drink alcohol or coffee, though I do drink soda occasionally. I am also a medical marijuana patient, so technically I am a drug user, but it's medicinal. Not depressed, nor do I become depressed when I don't receive pain.

While there may be similarities between the two groups, I certainly do not think there is any kind of correlation. I also don't think one has to be a high profile athlete to experience dopamine kicks/withdrawals while exercising or playing a sport. It would be more interesting to me to see some research into whether people with addictive personalities use/abuse these substances and how often/hard they work out.

I don't identify with any of those signs, no. In fact, I am quite far from any addictive behaviour.

Niner, my oldest is one of the top western all around riders in the nation. She suffers from depression, but at times when the depression is overwhelming, she isn't riding five horses a day. She isn't practicing or showing at the top level of her game. Having it under control, sure. Having it out of control, nope. I wasn't clear, sorry.

And as I said, the only drug she, or any of her fellow riders, abuses is caffeine. However, her first show horse was also a caffeine user. The second one, who placed much higher nationally doesn't touch the stuff.

Thank you all. I need to add in this theory and i hope you are not getting bored.

-Dopamine is the "motive" and "reward" emotion. It drives you..."lets do it , i like it , i want more", " i did it, "i am so happy", i am the best".
-Dopamine is also a home grown pain killer. And as every pain killer is highly addictive.

It has come to my attention, clinically verified, that best athletes [not the regular ones] are highly motivated persons. High Capable Profile Athletes [HCPA] as i call them, are athletes with increased dopamine levels, way about normal, comparing to the average guy.
It has come to my attention, clinically verified, that these athletes are dopamine seekers, which means that, when they can not train [very tired or injured], they are seeking for alternative ways to increase the dopamine levels [coffe, junk food , cigaretes, drugs everything that gives pleasure, may vary from person to person..., maybe masochists [?] ] and this makes them, sort of speak, addicts/junkies to a natural home grown chemical, called dopamine. .I am totally convinced that this addiction is the same addiction we have for food or water. This is a no suspicious addiction. Perfectly inherited by mother nature.

Well, the connection theory was innevitable. A masochist seeks for a great amount of pain. In other words, a masochist may seek for a great amount of dopamine. So does a qualified athlete. But let me give you a clue of what i am assuming [only] here : Let' s assume that the normal dopamine levels of a person is 5 . During a session it gets to 10, pain does that. 2 hours later it gets to 8 . 8 hours later it gets to 6. 10 hours later it get back to normal, which is 5. So we have 20 hours + the session time, of high dopamine levels .

It has come to my attention some masochists feel very well at this recovery mode, which in fact clarifies the dopamine party theory.
I was told that masochists come back for more, which in fact clarifies the [ perfectly natural] addiction theory.

So, this means that an HCPA indetify with the same signs with a masochist. Why ? Lets assume that the dopamine levels for a great athlete is 20. After hard training gets to 35. After 2 hours come back to 20. Multiple that by 3 factor [training sessions]. After that the heart wants..... but the muscle lacks... but they are addicted to pleasure=dopamine, so alternatives sources must be invented.

So, i repeat an HCPA when not training, seeks for the alternative dopamine sources [clinically verified] . Is a masochist also? I so there is a connection?

Is the masochist the next top human model [as i and 2 others believe, maybe 3 but the latter can't make his damned mind], called HCPA ?

I'm masochistic and identify with none of those things.
I even had a happy childhood and wasn't abused.
Go figure.

I do think athletes and dancers have streaks of
masochism. It seems very obvious in sports
like boxing and football but also endurance
sports like running.
I don't drink caffeine and drink very little
alcohol. No depression from not doing
masochistic activities or I don't think so.
I do take aspirin regularly but nothing
stronger.

I'm not sure I would believe the theories presented without hard evidence. As in dopamine levels of Olympic athletes taken regularly over a period of time. To prove this theory will require testing to see if the levels pan out in the way the theory says it will.

Five Tours de France. Five Giri d’Italia. Three world pro road championships. (In 1974, the year he entered only 140 races – hah! – and won only 38 of them for a 27-percent winning average, he took the hat-trick and won all three of these majors.) Seven Milan-San Remos. Two Tours of Flanders. Three Paris-Roubaix. Five Liège-Bastogne-Lièges. Two Amstel Gold Races. The hour record, in 1972 – a year in which he also won the Tour and the Giro, along with five major classics and 43 other races. His trophy shelf groans with iron from three Ghent-Wevelgems, three Flèche Wallonnes, three Paris-Nices, three Baracchi Trophies, six Montjuich Hill Climbs. Among others. His strength and endurance are legendary, but Merckx had no weaknesses as a sprinter, climber or time trialist, either. He holds the record for the most days in the Giro leader’s pink jersey, at 78, and the Tour’s yellow jersey, at 96. He’s the only rider to have won the Tour-Giro double three times. He won six Giro time trials. He won the Tour both overall and on points – the yellow jersey and the green jersey – three times, in 1969, ’71 and ’72. He holds the record for most stage wins in a single Tour, eight, and he did that twice, in ’70 and ’74 (and he won six stages in ’69 and again in ’72). Just to round out the collection, Merckx also won the King of the Mountains polka-dot jersey in ’69 and ’70. He did all this in epic battles against great riders, some of whom rank among the greatest athletes the sport has produced. Against Jacques Anquetil, against Felice Gimondi, against Luis Ocaña, Raymond Poulidor, Bernard Thévenet, Rik Van Looy, Joop Zoetemelk, Merckx battled and won – not just won, but decimated them, broke their will, crushed them totally and left them pedaling feebly in the thin vapor of his trail. “In those days, the big names didn’t ride to win,” says Zoetemelk. “First there was Merckx, and then another classification began behind him.”

If your theory does not fit Eddie Merckx, It has been falsified. Do not overlook his accident. Every race he rode since the late sixties was painfilled because of that accident, winning despite this curse, not because of it.

While we are here, lets watch Ned Overend in a field of 2500 riders at 56 years old last May.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kjJqcq5BROs

That was boring. Wasn't it. Like Merckx, there is Ned, and then there is everyone else. Doubt? Check this out. Here is Ned on Mount Washington in 2011. Where is anyone else?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=endscreen&NR=1&v=IEJezhsxe-Q

Here Ned addresses, "The capacity to suffer for four months a year". Is he talking about enjoying it?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?NR=1&feature=endscreen&v=wmjLuBrxn4s

Again, if Ned doesn't fit your theory, it isn't one.

And I? ...Rode 50 miles on Christmas day... in the rain. Yes, I could have avoided it. And I am pretty sure you would have avoided it, whatever the weather. My longest day was 109 miles, last August. Apartment hunting. Neither of these rides hurt, excepting my fanny. I don't ride at a suffering pace, I ride to get where I am going. Draw from this what you will. But I don't think I fit your theory either. I think what you have is not a theory but a series of observations about individuals.

Postscript : Woman wanted. Whips and chains required. Inquire within.

Just to muddy the waters even further, people are not the only animals that are competitive athletes. I've known dogs who absolutely love doing agility classes. Horses who are made for jumping or chasing down cows. They get an extra spark when they come into the show ring. And I'm pretty sure I've never known a masochistic horse or dog nor one with a substance abuse problem

#1 closest. i will add that when i get into bicycling i am very competitive with myself and push hard- though i never do races. i don't think it is about the hunt with my riding though as i skip it for months, then get back into it mainly for health. i think athletes do develop pain tolerance in order to "win" of achieve. a masochist (dictionary definition which i am a real example of) gets a direct sexual excitement and arousal from pain. Not any pain, though sometimes it surprises me. Athletics such as heavy weight lifting which i have done since the early 1980's, and bicycling which i do then don't do have NEVER aroused me at all. More the opposite.
Pain as in AFTER getting tattoos, being whipped, flogged, clamps, hot wax, clit suction> slapping> whipping, pinwheel, pinching etc arouses me, i get hot, if in bondage hotter> the tighter the bondage with spreader bar etc, the hotter and by that i mean wet and ready for a hard fuck, suck and anything in between. i NEVER get that from food or athletic activity.
