I blame the refs for allowing it to continue.

Foul's three and four were pretty flagrant too. Or maybe it was the chickensh*t grin on Vanderbilt's face that gave it away. Foul five was not even an attempt at going for the ball.

I'd like to see the player do the same sort of thing and get away with it whilst playing rugby, ice hockey.. or ladies hockey for that matter.

I would have to have seen the entire game. That five minute video did exactly what it appears to have been intended to do - incite people. Did anyone happen to read that the videographer had a relative playing on the opponent's team? No conflict of interest there. If you edited Pittsburgh Steeler James Harrison's career down to a 5 minute video it might make Oakland Raider Jack Tatum look like an altar boy.

Of course it did. From what I understand of the rules, basketball is pretty much a no contact sort of sport.

He didn't even look like he was going for the ball. He seemed to get a kick out of nearly clotheslining the smaller player.

stllauk,

It is not in reality.  As the great Bill Russell of the Boston Celtics once said: "Basketball is a contact sport.
(American) Football is a collision sport." (added for clarity)

Here is a Brief Video of the 1984 Championship NBA Championship between the
Lakers and the Celtics.  This is the famous/infamous McHale foul on Kurt Rambis that
changed the game and the series in Boston's favor. It was a deliberate clothesline take down.
No one was evicted.  Listen to the the commentator who is a Boston Celtic.

Eventually this led to a rules change in professional basketball that says if the referee
so deems it the fouled player can have his free throws AND HIS TEAM ALSO GETS
THE BALL AGAIN.  Also now players can be ejected for "flagrant fouls".   But it was
never a non contact sport on the professional level.
