http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2012/01/06/taibbi-montanas-slap-at-citizens-united-may-be-the-start-of-something/

Montana has, since 1912, had a law limiting corporate spending to influence elections.  This law makes a lot of sense historically, since Montana was basically a colonial economy for many years under the copper barons and cattle kings.  In any case, the MT Supreme Court just ruled that Citizen's United doesn't compel them to strike down this ban.

Way to go MT judiciary!  Makes me proud to be a native Montanan.  This decision could go further to defeat the CU decision than all the "occupying" in the world was going to do.

Sad to say, but it won't matter since the Supreme Court, which is thoroughly compromised, will simply overturn them. At least someone is trying, but it will take a purge of the Supremes to stop the madness.

which is why this whole "person" matter needs to be completely overhauled.

In commercial america they treat all persons alike which include living men and women the same as atificial entities and it has been used to completely destroy our law.

The point being that a corporation has no speech at all. It is a name. It is a fiction and cannot speak. It requires a person within the corporation to speak for it.

Hence the TOP people in said corporation get double say so.

Once as a man or woman and again as a powerful corporation which is unfair political leverage.

corporations whould be banned entirely from the political process on all levels.

I have been waiting to sit down and have a nice conversation with microsoft but they keep giving me to joe, bob and jane instead.

Montana elected Jeanette Rankin to the US Congress in 1916. (That's before the 19th Amendment, BTW.) Maybe they'll take up some sensible leadership on some other important socio-political matters this century too.

It's sort of interesting that for all its economic basis in minerals and agriculture, Montana didn't go party-line with the neo-conservative radical-rightwing religious and hawkish mindsets that pervaded most other midwestern states. They might be the last bulwark of paleo-conservatives; thoughtful, cautious, practical, and foresightful about lawmaking; hardworking ranchers, farmers, loggers, miners, etc, people who live close to the land, and also recognize both personal independence and social interdependence.

Women voting and holding office? ... Well, yeah, they're half the herd.
One bull covering the entire herd? ... Well, nope, that's bad for genes.
55mph max, 30mi to next town? ... Well, maybe, cops gotta show cause.
Genemod pollen drifting next door? ... Well, hey, that was going to happen.
(They've lost some battles to Monsanto's lawyers, but that ain't over yet.)

Sensible folks up there. If it had any place where I could sail year-round, I'd move back, still might retire there.

Montana does have a history of electing outstanding legislators. Jeannette Danish, yes, but don't forget Mike Mansfield. A very wise man and very influential for many years. I think the state has become more socially conservative since it became a Mecca for Californians. Still, Citizen's United won't get overturned unless someone is willing to challenge it. This is a good first step, and considering Montana's history, there may be facts to support a challenge.
