I had some amazing college professors especially the ones who taught literature. I was exposed to a great deal of different types of literature through my college days and some of it I hated simply because the plot sucked, there was one war story that I so abhorred that I am unable to remember the title however it was well written.

Yes there is a point to this---bare with me--quite a few years ago, I purchased a couple books in a series; porn books---if anyone feels it will add to the discussion I will give the name of the series. So I bought the first one and maybe the second...the first one was good one a scale of 1-10 it was 4 or 5 range so before I finished it, I bought the third one and one by the same author that was not part of the series. Anyway I wound up with four books total before I finished the first one--the second book was okay too four or five range but there was some stuff I did dislike about it however by the time I got to the other two I was completely disappointed that I had purchased more of them.

I rarely keep books too long unless they are really really good--then I will have multiple copies all looking dog eared. So I read the four books and passed them on, no big loss I got them used on Amazon. Recently I saw there were two more books in the series and having been given a gift card I decided to revisit those books and see if my thoughts had changed any. I bought five books altogether for about $20 all of them are in mint condition and since my partner has not read them yet, I will pass them his way afterwards.

The porn part is pretty good, not perfect because it teeters on Daddy/daughter more so than BDSM. Shrugs that is totally not me---but what really bothers me is the fact that the author is simply not a good one and his problems revolve around his dialog and characters. It's really bad. If you want more details I will be happy to share.

Now I did read the Beauty Series, although I did not personally care for them, I will hand it to Anne, it had all the elements of a good book. She had an amazingly unique plot, I've not seen anything like it before, they books were extremely well written and the sex parts were steamy.

Between the two series, I think Anne Rice to be the better novelist in a literary sense and also from erotic standpoint. So with that said, when you read porn, what's the appeal? The steamy sex parts and skip all the rest, read it all and as long as the plot is good and the sex is hot caring less if the author is a literary genius or I read it all and take it all in, if the author sucks I am with fragile thinking glad I bought that shit used?

For me, sex is a LOT more mental than it is physical. You could be touching all the right spots in all the right ways and I won't even flinch unless my mind is in the right place, or I am perceiving the act as sexy. So I, personally, can't just skip to the steamy parts, or the book won't arouse me. Unless I have a mental understanding of the situation, characters, motivation, etc. it's just boring ole' sex to me.

Does the author have to be a literary genius? Nah. But the author can't suck at what he does either. If the book isn't written well, then I can't get "sucked up" into it. And if I can't get sucked into it, then its boring.

I would think what constitutes as "porn" to some may/doesn't to others. So it's all in the eye of the beholder, of course. (Smiles)

When I read porn, part of the appeal is that the steamy sex parts are interwoven either purposely or even unknowingly into a story. I want to get into who the players are and set a stage.

I've tried reading the "sex for sex's sake" type of books... the one story after another of f*cking this or that, him or her. And they just don't get it for me.
However, place a copy of Exit to Eden in my hand and you'll get a totally different response. (ha!)

So yes, I want to take it all in. And if I feel it has no redeeming qualities, I'll return it to my bookstore intact with receipt in tow.

If you're looking for something that's got a plot, the word to search under is "erotica". That should mean something that gets your juices going, but still has a story. You'll probably want the higher "heat" levels of most publishers if you want a BDSM theme, but read through some of the descriptions and any samples to see where it lands as each publisher has a different scale.

If I am reading it as porn, I don't want a plot I want the sex right away. I use literotica mostly because its easy to find just that. Having said that if the writer is terrible then it won't work anyway, I have read some on the literotica site which make me cringe, they just use sexual slang and assume that makes it horny.

100,000,000,000% agree.
And I love BDSM fiction.

Does it have pictures? If it doesn't have pictures, it's not porn, it's erotica :-P

In today's world of sites like literotica where anyone can post a story and call it erotica (or art, or whatnot), the definition of quality becomes a bigger issue, as well as what the reader wants to get out of it. I've had some times where I've read something where the author was truly horrible at writing, didn't use spellcheck, etc. It was almost painful to read, yet I found sincere enjoyment in exploring the ideas and concepts presented--Just wishing they were better presented. Likewise, I've read some truly excellently worded writings from people who had genuine skill at writing, but had absolutely nothing new or enlightening to say. I enjoyed reading them when I was looking to just enjoy a well-written piece, but found them dry and boring when I was looking for something else or some new ideas.

You can have plot and have sex right away too. I've got 3 books out that start that way and I'm certainly not alone in that.

According to whom? Dictionary definition: pornography: Sexually explicit pictures, writing, or other material whose primary purpose is to cause sexual arousal. erotica: sexually explicit material: art or literature intended to arouse sexual desire by portraying sex in an explicit way.

I don't usually read crappy books, not more than the first 50 pages anyway.  So I enjoy the entire story, steamy and otherwise.

This is how I put the "fun" in reading is fundamental in my house:
Reading erotic literature is one of my relationship tools.  In a pair bond, I would chain my slave to the wall, light candles and she would read to Master . . . until my tortures and sexual attentions leave her breathless, quaking and unable to read the shaking book further.  In a poly, we would all gang up on the reader, and take turns reading after each reader was spent.

Is there a situation where sex, torture, orgasms and reading isn't fun?

For me, unfortunately, yes. For him, no.

Once, he made me read my own erotic fiction out loud, while we had sex. I've never met a writer who enjoyed reading his/her crappy, unpolished work out loud. Let alone erotic fiction. Let alone erotic fiction I wrote while extremely horny, that NO ONE was supposed to see. My mistake was telling him it existed. You can't ever tell your dominant that you have secret erotica and expect him not to look at it. The experience was pretty humiliating, but I guess that was the point, hehe.

Never-the-less, I guess it'd be fun to read someone else's stuff out loud while f*cking.

You have a point, it can been material specific.  I like movies, but if I had to watch Warhorse or the English Patient again, I would contemplate suicide.

I made a slave read me the Gor books...  by the 7th book, she wanted to pay recompense to get out of it.  She paid with a public bull whipping ... after being oiled and salted.

I like my porn straight, with very little story. I like the characters to remain faceless, and will usually scroll over the getting to know the girl about to be brutalized bits.
That being said, I still loved exit to eden.

Oh dude, you are a vicious sadist, a sick sick man-making em actually read the Gor books is beyond even me.

Note-I gave em a crack in about 3rd grade-had just gone through Edgar Rice Burroughs John Carter series and read Norman as straight SciFi, and even then knew the writing was absolute schlock, painfully bad

It's an ongoing problem in porn, literature is about the human experience, conflict and resolution, change - porn is all about the money shot and all porn has the same ending.

If there is a story, it isn't porn, its a story with sex in it. Porn lit is often referred to as "wank fodder": erotica is theoretically written to arouse you psychologically, porn only has to arouse you physiologically, the "plot" is usually just an excuse to describe sexual acts.
