Ok - so you need to be logged in before you can chat - cool. Should the server allow a nick change? My thoughts are - "NO". You can only chat under the same nick you registered with.

I'm not sure where you're going with this question. I have two profiles on the other side, I could log into vid chat uaing the inactive one, but why would I? My friends wouldn't know me!

If someone wants to hide behind another name, they can. Anyone can lie, anywhere.

I've never been in a chat room in my life. So I really have nothing to contribute, but I wanted to be included.

You have pretty well sumed up almost every post I have written on CM.

The O.P. is referring to people who enter chat rooms with their profile name, and immediately change it to a different name to chat.
(It's not in reference at all to those who post in the forum, Lady Hibiscus. <Smiles> )

In the few times I have visited chat rooms I've noticed people changing their names too. It really doesn't seem to have a purpose other than be confusing, in my opinion.

I vote yes so when I enter a chat room I can log out change my name and all the guys that previously PM'ed me asking if I am owned will PM me under my new name and I can say, "Fuck off troll" all over again.

OMG! Squee!

( Such an uncool response, I went all girly-squirmy. In fact I think I think I wriggled a bit. Glad we only have a print medium here. )

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Poll - Chat rooms - Allow nick changes? (1/8/2012 4:06:50 PM)

Yes, I figured he was referring to Fragile's sly technique, MsClick!

A group of my friends lured me into the time suck that is vidchat...and since thw block is an even bigger friend there, I will just stick with being myself.

Have not been on the "Chat rooms" here, but I would presume them to be somewhat similar to IRC, where nickname changes are not only a part of life, but in the right context, can be very fun and entertaining..

ShortFuse72 -> RE: Poll - Chat rooms - Allow nick changes? (1/15/2012 1:52:39 PM)

OP here. Well thanks for the feedback. Based on the responses so far I am guessing that most would be happy interacting with fake profiles then?

tiggerspoohbear -> RE: Poll - Chat rooms - Allow nick changes? (1/15/2012 2:10:22 PM)

If going into chat rooms and people choose for one reason or another, then I suggest you remember it's the internet and move on to something else.  Yahoo chat is a prime example where people could sign into a room under multiple nick users and screw with others just for the hell of it.  Why shouldn't someone expect it to happen it any chat room when it's allowed?

SylvereApLeanan -> RE: Poll - Chat rooms - Allow nick changes? (1/15/2012 3:14:19 PM)

I'm going to assume you're talking about the text chatrooms as opposed to the video chat. Since the text chats are IRC based, then, absolutely yes, different names should be allowed. IRC is notorious for massive user dumps, meaning you lose connection to the server for no apparent reason, which often results in "ghosts," meaning the nick you were using originally is locked until the server decides to unfreeze it. You have to use a different nick if you want to get back into the chat. In addition, changing your nick to "UserNickAFK" is a commonly accepted practice to let people know you've stepped away from your computer to get a snack, use the loo, answer the phone, or whatever. Last, but not least, since the text chats are on IRC, CollarMe has no control over whether or not people change nicknames once they log in to a chat room, making the whole question moot.

Now, if you're talking about the video chat, I haven't used those, so I can't comment.

In any case, this thread is really looking like nothing more than a petulant whine. You might want to put on your big boy pants and learn to cope.

RexDarcy -> RE: Poll - Chat rooms - Allow nick changes? (1/15/2012 3:27:55 PM)

Sylvere, good advice but from what I have seen from a lot of people with similar issues to this, putting on the big boy pants and rolling with it normally isn't an option. Maybe having a fit about "fakes" is a new fetish.

SylvereApLeanan -> RE: Poll - Chat rooms - Allow nick changes? (1/15/2012 3:33:08 PM)

Fakes? OMG, did you say FAKES?!?!? That is so hot.

'Scuse me while I go clean up.

Wow - bit harsh there with those comments Sylver. And no - not a whine, a genuine question. I have absolutely no intention of turning this in to a flame war so perhaps I need to clarify the point I was trying to make / ask opinion about.

Rephrasing - Original point was that actually getting on to the char server requires either a registered profile (if using a web browser) OR a valid nick / pass if using an irc client. Presumably this was a deliberate decision in order to limit spam, bots and assorted other idiots. Being able to so easily use a totally different nick struck me as strange and was either a function that users wanted & liked or was an oversight..... hence the poll.

I take the point about ghost nicks - valid point, but a lot of servers allow for a ghost-kill command so is technically possible.

What is interesting to see however is the overwhelming enthusiasm for being able to change nicks at will - which was rather the point of the poll. Given that most respondents to the poll prefer it that way then as another poster suggested "if you don't like it don't use it" (or words to that effect) I would answer - it's for those very reasons that I don't tend to use irc. The fact that you needed a registered profile to even get on the server is what prompted me to try it out to see if this irc server was different to any others. Turns out it isn't and that people like it that way. No biggie. I do however wonder if that might explain why, given the total number of users here, why so few use the chat room feature.

In closing - to those that took the time to give their input - thanks - it has answered my question.

I used to go on a rugby chat forum as Gordon Brown. That was fun! I got my best insults that way. (he was the fat jabba the Hutt lookalike Prime Minister we had )

ConnossuerofPain -> RE: Poll - Chat rooms - Allow nick changes? (1/20/2012 7:18:06 AM)

perhaps they want to chat in secret so no one else knows who they are so they can be who they want to be at that particular moment

And you think making them keep the same name as their profile will stop fakes? Why don't you just tell us what is bothering you instead of playing games and maybe someone can help you out.
