erieangel -> What has the EPA done for you? (1/9/2012 1:39:26 AM)

Just about all of the Republican candidates have said something about ending the EPA, so I thought it might be good idea to take a look at what this country faced prior to EPA regulations:

The preceding were just 6 photos taken in the 1970s under the EPA's Documerica project.  Between 1972 and 1977 more than 80,000 similar photos were taken.  Recently 15,000 of them were found in the National Archives.  Story is here:  http://www.takepart.com/photos/red-white-and-gross-america-epa

I don't want to go back to a world like this and anybody who thinks that "business" will do the right thing and not pollute like they did prior to EPA regulations is kidding themselves.  The regulations were put in place because "business" had shown an unwillingness to care for the environment and they will do so again.

Absolutely. Thanks for sharing.

Cons are correct tho in saying if there were no rules or regs to follow, that businesses would make more money.[8|]....to[&o]....to[X(]

Killing off customers is one sure way to make sure they dont go anywhere else.
As long as the profits are there why should they care

*removing tongue from cheek*

Owner59 -> RE: What has the EPA done for you? (1/9/2012 7:43:33 AM)

Well it would work like this......costumers vs profits....costumers vs profits....costumers vs profits....costumers vs profits....costumers vs profits.... and after all that thought and calculation.....the one that leaves more money at the end wins.

Pretty simple.

Madame4a -> RE: What has the EPA done for you? (1/9/2012 7:45:03 AM)

and thank goodness for EPA ... its about safe water to drink and relatively clean air to drink... cleaner oceans, rivers and lakes for both recreation and drinking water...

etc...

But the rat poison republicans are for stripping away these noxious over-regulations and horrendous taxes (cuz, you know that regulatory burdens like mercury scrubbers are effectively a tax on corporate personhood) so that you can get a job!!!!!

Thats what you want, right?

No talk of good jobs, no talk of breathable air or potable water.....that aint in the rat poison republican elevator speeches, haven't heard anything about that.....the trouble is that 'Gorre' is making money off this clean stuff.  Thats whats wrong with you people.

Hillwilliam -> RE: What has the EPA done for you? (1/9/2012 8:41:52 AM)

In Gore's case, at least it's an American making money and not someone you have to hack up a pint of phlegm to prounounce his first name.

Those are some good photos. Reminds me of my mom telling me about how the Ohio(?) River caught on fire when she was growing up. The idea that a river could be so polluted that water can catch on fire just boggles my mind.

Go check out what happens when a country has little to no enviromental protections in place: China's Pollution. And even more 'Good News' coming from China regarding pollution.

quote:

World Weather Travellers Guide

"This may not come as any surprise to you. Acid rain affects 38% of the Chinese cities. The main cities where acid rain occurs is Beijing, Shanghai as well as Guangzhou, Shanzhen and Hong Kong.

The Chinese people rely heavily on coal as their main source of energy consumption. When this coal is burned, PAH's as well as sulfur dioxide (SO2) are produced. This SO2 converts to sulfate (SO4) when oxidised. The SO4 is highly soluble, and that explains why it's the main cause of acid rain in China.

Acid rain is a major concern in China, particularly in the southern and eastern parts. The reason why acid rain isn't as bad over the northern parts of China is because the high proportion of carbonates (CO3) in the dust clouds act to neutralise the SO2 emissions in the area."

erieangel -> RE: What has the EPA done for you? (1/18/2012 3:26:12 AM)

Those links were interesting.  Especially when you consider that the second link reported that China isn't doing anything about pollution because the US refuses to...while the US uses the excuse that doing anything at all would be counterproductive given that China and India pollute so much.

Lucylastic -> RE: What has the EPA done for you? (1/18/2012 3:30:47 AM)

the US has been using excuses for years, china is the newest escuse

Moonhead -> RE: What has the EPA done for you? (1/18/2012 4:54:12 AM)

I still think the all time classic excuse is that it was raining in Holland and Gore signed the Kyoto Treaty, rather than a real politician...

Lucylastic -> RE: What has the EPA done for you? (1/18/2012 5:10:15 AM)

dont get me started!
LOL
hatred of gore is almost as bad as ODS
