defiantbadgirl -> innocent man tortured and sentenced to death (1/9/2012 10:18:16 AM)

http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/envoy/iran-sentences-former-u-marine-death-151159772.html

The man is not a spy. He was obviously tortured into making a false confession.

AlwaysLisa -> RE: innocent man tortured and sentenced to death (1/9/2012 2:43:15 PM)

Sadly, he appears to be a political pawn.   We are teetering on the brink with Iran as it is, over the nuclear weapons issue, this won't help.  I don't think we have heard the last of this.

mnottertail -> RE: innocent man tortured and sentenced to death (1/9/2012 2:50:18 PM)

Point is, I think we just bought his death back (inadvertently that) and they save face for kissing our ass from that, and making big howl and lotsa noise at americans....

Politesub53 -> RE: innocent man tortured and sentenced to death (1/10/2012 4:05:13 AM)

One has to ask why an Ex US Marine, recently in service in that very same region, ever thought Iran was a safe place to go.

He is being used as a pawn by Iran, plain and simple. That said, he must have known the risk he was taking going there in the first place.

Sanity -> RE: innocent man tortured and sentenced to death (1/10/2012 5:07:05 AM)

Read the article - he was in Iran to visit his grandmother. Why should it be so risky to go visit a loved one?

Oh thats right, because its a fascist Islamic state, everyone should know better than going there

Well brains, according to very recent statements on here by some of the right, the US has been at war with Iran since 1979. Either they are wrong, or you are, best you take issue with them then eh.

Why should it be so risky visiting a country you are at war with ? ..........gee thats a toughie. [8|]

Sanity -> RE: innocent man tortured and sentenced to death (1/10/2012 5:27:55 AM)

No, try again... if you had paid attention you would have seen that someone wrote that Iran has been on a war footing with the United States since 1979 [:D]

Here is further evidence, for those still wallowing in denial of that obvious truth

Ok, to restate another person's question. Shouldn't someone, especially with a recent military background, know to stay the fuck AWAY from a country that we have been on a 'war footing' (whatever the fuck you define that as) for over 30 years?

I truly sympathize with the guy and realize he was just visiting relatives but, with all the sabre rattling, did he not have a good idea he was going to become a pawn?

Sanity -> RE: innocent man tortured and sentenced to death (1/10/2012 6:13:06 AM)

Maybe he didnt realize how much the Iranian government hates us?

Some people are naive, just because he has a military background doesnt make him a political guru

He is probably a Muslim and obviously didnt think he would have issues. Assuming he was innocent, and just wanted to see his grandmother before her passing, this is all extremely unfortunate, what he got caught up in

I do feel for him

I wonder what we're going to have to give up to get him out?
That IS the job of the state department now. Get him back.
(I'm thinking of the diplomatic efforts to get those hikers out)

Really ? Surely being right next door he might have realised what was going on, what with his traing and everything.

According to another thread, having a military background qualifies him to be President. Nice to see you dont agree though.

I cant see that he was unaware of the danger, whatever the circumstances.

ShibsStories -> RE: innocent man tortured and sentenced to death (1/10/2012 1:01:42 PM)

FR
Not having seen the video that he is supposed to be under duress in, can't say one way or the other if I feel he is a spy. I am sure the U.S. has spies over there though, and bets are on they would be of Iranian decent. Than again, he really could just be there to visit his grams. Either way I find torture ethically wrong, and hope we find a way to bring this man home safe.

Ps.
Anyone else irritated over the clip going on about Iran's nuclear program after they finished talking about Amir?
Just feel it's a bit underhanded on the medias side as well as a bit off topic.

Stupidity has always been punishable by death.
